Reggie reveals all (or some) to MTV.com photo

In an interview with MTV.com, Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Aime offers up some interesting tidbits about the near (and not so near) future of the Wii console. Highlights include:

On online play: Fils-Aime repeats once again (much to the dismay of many) that the first online Wii title will be Pokémon Battle Revolution … in Japan. He pegs “very early 2007” as when the company will be on board with online play in other regions.

On Super Mario Galaxy: How does “any time between the end of March and next Christmas” sound to you?

On Goldeneye coming to the Virtual Console: He doesn’t rule it out, but cites “a lot of issues” as the reason it hasn’t been confirmed. Keep holding your breath, though, as Nintendo is currently “exploring all the rights issues.”

On breaking your television with the Wii remote: Fils-Aimes suggests you wipe your sweaty hands, and uh, don’t let go of the remote while playing.

Er... Im I the only one noticing they are delaying games that pretty much looked complete? (SSMB, Metroid 3, Pokemon, Mario Galaxy? ) are getting delayed to Kindom come? Could it be because they are the ONLY worth while games coming for the Wii and they are stretching them as much as possible? I mean seriously they first said Mario Galaxy could've been a release title and now they are countering Halo 3 with it? Come on!

I hope you are REALLY enjoying Zelda guys, because thats the only decent thing to play it for at least 3-6 months or so (and that is if you are Into SSMB or Pokemon)

On online play:
But Elebits is being reported today as having some online functionality even if its not Vs play. Its something I guess.
The Wiire

On Super Mario Galaxy:
I'll put it on my xmas list then. Since when have Nintendo ever released anything early? And I'm guessing we're getting Wario, Metriod, Smash Bros first half of next year.

On Goldeneye coming to the Virtual Console:
Would be nice if they could bring such an iconic title to the Wii and would be a prime suspect for the UPDATE function. Given the amounts they are charging for VC titles this should be one they subsidise a little to get the license.

On breaking your television with the Wii remote:
LOL stick it to em Reggie. But hey, give the 'tards some fishing wire on those straps anyway.

Honestly, guys, Goldeneye is really hard to play these days. Don't get me wrong, that game was king back in the day, we probably spent more time on that than any other N64 game, we probably rented it enough times to have paid for two copies, but I tried playing it again a couple years back. The control is archaic and the graphics are so bad it's really hard to see what's going on. And we even used to do four player split screen! It's a shame, we used to have such a blast with it, but now I've been spoiled with my dual-analog and my crisp graphics (and I don't even have an HDTV), I wouldn't download Goldeneye even if it were released on the Virtual Console.

I don't see what you're getting at, you can say the same for pretty much all the VC titles.

I too probably wouldn't grab it unless there was some update done but I'm sure it'll be a popular download for those who maybe never saw it the first time or people who didn't play it to death.

Call me crazy but what if they had 4 player online mode for it. it would be the best plus you would be playing it dual anolog none the less. not with the N64 game pad.

Dexter has a good point. Other VC titles, like Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time have modern counterparts that more or less use the same formula. On the other hand, Goldeneye, while definately a retro favorite, is missing a lot of key features that make FPSes what they are today. In the end, I think a lot of people will be burned by their purchase.

Jelster, you don't play many FPSes, do you?

Any idiot that expects Goldeneye to play like a modern FPS deserves everything they get. People who actually live on planet earth however might want to relive some of those past experiences or see what all the hype and rose tinted stories are all about. Jesus, isn't that what retro gaming and the VC is all about?

BTW - what has my FPS experience got to do with discussing Goldeneye being a VC title and it being a good candidate for updates?

Jelster, you really couldn't say that about all the VC games. The older ones used sprites instead of 3D models, so they could afford a better look to them than a lot of the early 3D games, but the main issue of control isn't there with the 16-bit and before games either, because they're a lot of platformers and the like. 2D sidescrolling platformers have not evolved their control schemes, or at least not NEARLY to the extent that FPSs have since Goldeneye.

Then again, there was the rarely used, often overlooked "use two N64 controllers at once for a dual analog setup" that Goldeneye offered...

I loved doing the two controllers on Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. Flawless idea, lol.

March to Xmas next year? WTF?
I couldn't care less about goldeneye. It wasn't that good when it came out now its even worse. If I could go back in time I would stop FPS games ever being on consoles. It's wrong, WRONG!

Im gonna buy an N64 tomarrow along with Goldeneye just so I can relive the glory days. Thanks for the Memories!

I'm in the camp of people who loved Goldeneye when it was new but can't go back and play it anymore. Blurry graphics, outdated controls. Yet I still go back and play Super Metroid a couple times a year even though it came out 3 years earlier.
