Reggie Fils-Aime says no Wii successor on the way anytime soon photo

Everybody's favorite meat ambassador, Reggie Fils-Aime, has spoken about the future of the Nintendo Wii in an interview with Reuters, quelling rumors that Nintendo is already whipping up a console to take the Wii's place on the throne:

We believe the role of a new console, a new system, is to bring great new entertainment ideas to life. We launched (the Wii and DS) those systems when we had great ideas that would benefit either from a touch screen or from a Wii remote.

Fils-Aime went on to say that Nintendo would consider the launch of a new console when they had "great new entertaining ideas that can only be done with a new console." Of course, anyone with a half a brain about the way the industry works can guess that something stinks here; any successful organization is always planning towards the future. Nintendo are hardly the type of company to rest on their laurels, now are they?

I guess that's about right, they're making what... like $200 profit on every $269 Wii? I guess as the years go on the parts for a Wii would end up costing a few bucks and they'd make 100% profit or something.

Good for Reggie, thinking outside the box and all.

Uh oh, Nintendo fanboy shitstorm in 3, 2, 1...

All of these rumors about Nintendo talking to publishers and developers about the next Nintendo console in 2011 probably have some validity to them. That would place it 5 years after the release of the Wii, which has been the general trend since the N64. And it would give said developers 3 years to put towards development of releasing a quality launch title.

So everyone stop getting your panties in a bunch over what should be staying behind closed doors.

I really can't wait until a new Wii comes out with graphics power on par with the Next Gen consoles (aka: PS4, Xbox 3) Nintendo used to be my favourite company, but lately my PS3 and 360 have been getting much more love than the Wii. (plus 11 pound black things are much more hot than 2 pound white things :P)

Translation: When Reggie says great, he really means profitable.

"We believe the role of a new console, a new system, is to bring [profitable] new entertainment ideas to life. We launched those systems when we had [profitable] ideas that would benefit either from a touch screen or from a Wii remote."

Once the Wii isn't selling 800,000 units monthly, see how quickly the tune changes.

PS - I love the Wii, and can't wait for a more powerful successor to show up. It sucks that we'll be waiting so long, but this is just smart business on Nintendo's part.

Yeah, of course they're working on a successor. Why wouldn't they?

You would be foolish to believe that Nintendo isn't hard at work on their next console at this moment (along with MS and Sony). It's the way things work.

Nintendo might be working on a newer console, but I think he means that the next-next gen is many years ahead. That's true for all the consoles: we won't be hearing of a new xbox or PS3 in 6-8 years either.

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if they update the Wii with a few GB of internal storage and piracy/homebrew busting measures.

Nintendo is making millions do you really think there looking for the next console. Also that pic is so cute that I want to set it on fire now.

They are probably working on some crazy new casual idea of crap... nah... but I know they're working on something.

That's good, I payed a lot of money for that console, I don't want it to die so soon.
And PLEASE, make the next one backwards compatible with both
the GC and the Wii. I don't want to have lot's of consoles plugged to my TV.

It is a well known fact that planning for the next generation of a consumer electronics product starts right after the current version has been released which mean that not only Nintendo but also Microsoft and Sony are already working on the next consoles. You don't just dream up a console and get it into production over a few months that would only be possible when you take components that already exist and just put them together, which would basically come down to building a gamer pc in a nicer case. So Reggie can go back to being the hamburglar and stop talking BS.

Why announce anything about a successor to the Wii when they are selling twice as much as their competitors combined? They have not even cut the Wii's price point yet.

More power next time please.

Hopefully there won't ever be a successor to the Wii. That is, unless they actually have some new ideas other than another zelda or mario.
