Redbox game rental kiosks now in Orlando too photo

Redbox is blowing up these days for DVD rental. It seems like the machines are everywhere and they always have lines at them. While I'm all for the newfangled digital rental of movies, I have to admit that Redbox is easier and cheaper.

I want the same for games, but not too many places have the game-focused kiosks available. There's some in Reno, Nevada and Wilmington, North Carolina, but now we can add Orlando, Florida to the list. An Orlando resident has noticed that Redbox has set up shop in his home town, offering game rentals at $2 a pop. He says that hey had Red Dead Redemption available for PS3 last week. Nice! They also had UFC Undisputed 2010, and I see Alan Wake in his picture.

This sounds cool, but $2/night? Hmmm sounds kinda iffy though i can still see many times where the price is perfect.

I'm not sure how they expect this to be popular. It's not like movies where you can get one when you feel like watching it and be done with it by the same night, most games are going to take at least a few days to complete, and by then it would be cheaper to just rent from Blockbuster or something.

Meh. I prefer to buy games, rather than rent them. And it's rare for there to be any newer, interesting games that someone among my friends doesn't have for me to borrow, if I'd rather not buy.

That's a pretty cheap hooker.

$2 a night? Shit that's cheaper than pretty much every place(minus Mom&Pops obviously) and the biggest problem with game rentals is new-game-availability. I'll give one of these a try if I see one.

I don't get what's so great about Red Box, the selection of movies is pathetic.

I can see this being a pretty rad tool for testing games before you buy them, but I can see these things emptying pretty quickly with newer games.

$2/night is what Blockbuster is charging these days. Only without the option to go beyond 5 days.

2 a night? Screw that I will stick with Gamefly

This could be a major problem for story-based games. Take Alan Wake for example. I paid $40 for the game (new, in case you're wondering) and beat it in 3 days. 3 days of renting? $6. If I were to put a little bit of hustle in my gaming step, or devote a single day to playing, that cost could be brought down to either $2 or $4. I don't feel like playing through the game a second time, and I could always rent the game again if I wanted to power through the DLC (though given my stance on DLC given the relative quality coming out of all studios, I might not even bother).

I live in Reno and these are pretty popular for games. I had no idea it was so exclusive though! I sure as hell can't justify the price.

I'm in Reno too. And honestly, its amazing. I can blow through a game in a day or two, costing me just a few dollars. Batman, Arkham Asylam, Halo ODST, and many others. Not so great for multiplayer heavy games, but single player experiences? I love it.

$2 a night is kind of expensive. I pay $4 for 5 nights at my local Family Video.

I can see this working for action or adventure games well. I'd rather spend $4 or $6 for God of War 3 or Alane Wake than buy them, play them through in a day or two and never touch them again.

red box is for trashy people who can't afford internet and can't stream shit off appletv, netflix, or hulu.

but at least now there might be some competition for gamefly who REALLY needs to step up their shipping game.

so people who don't want all of those expensive subscription services are trash? I guess I'll get back to my trailer and pet pig then.
Also, when you can find iron man 2 on hulu, please let me know.

$2 isn't bad, considering I play around 12 hours a night on weekends. That's $4 for most games.

That's actually a great idea if you ask me. If anything, it's a $2 fully-unlocked demo. Gives you a chance to try out games, and then if they catch you, you could just buy the game yourself.

Or considering how fast I beat some games, that'd equal $8-$12 games. Now if only they could bring these to California.

GDI they stole my idea! About 2 years ago I was talking to a redbox guy about a video game verison for 2 dollars a night. I am getting my tin foil hat.

I pay 15 a month for Netflix and watch 20 movies a month not including all the streaming tv I watch from it. That certainly beats out going to a Redbox. And Hulu is free.

There are so many good games coming out lately that it seems I'm barely able to start on before I'm tempted to try another. Redbox seems to hit the nail on the head with cheap game rentals for those of us who want to try everything and who are on a budget.

There is a Gamefly kiosk where I work that does the exact same thing. $2/night and its gets new games same day they come out. The neat thing is the machine uses your email account (which you enter the first time you want to rent a game) to send you free rental coupons every few weeks so I can try out a game for a night and decide whether I should buy it. I use this kiosk to test out games now before I go drop $60 on them and often am able to beat a game on a long weekend. Plus, I don't get charged for Sundays since the building the machine is located in is closed on Sundays.

Case in point: I spent a total of $6 to beat God of War III which was a great deal and cheaper than Blockbuster.

Yeah, they've been advertising this locally for the last few days. Seems kinda pricy to me, but I don't play many console titles nowadays. I totally would've gone for this when I was younger, though.

$2/night for a game is highway robbery for anything other than a game that's going to a party.

You guys are insane if you think this is overpriced. It is overpriced if you plan on keeping a game for a long time, but for most rental games, you should be able to finish it for $4 bucks. And 4 bucks to play and beat a brand new $60 game to me, is brilliant.

If you have better local options(like the guy who said he pays $4 for 5 days), you're lucky and not the norm. Or maybe I'm unlucky. My home town has no video game rental store as they all went out of business a year and a half ago. My college town has blockbusters still, and they overcharge.

I don't like subscription services, and I don't like Blockbuster's $8-9 rental.

I hope they expand this to moar places in Florida.

Yeah I have to say this is a damn good deal. My local blockbuster wants like $15 to rent a PS3/360 game for a week. Seriously. I don't rent from them but they have that price up in the window like it's a great deal.

It does work out to about 2 bucks a night but what if you dont want to do it in week increments? Red box will be the better deal. As people said above, a lot of games can be blown out in a couple days.. and this would be great to pick up a specific game if you need it for a party or something.

Even for multiplayer... maybe you just wanna play for 1 night with a group of friends but they dont play often enough to buy the game.
