Red Steel 2 may have defeated the waggle photo

In Red Steel 2, the harder you swing the Wiimote, the harder your character will swing his sword. Usually, I would complain about a feature like this. I'm a lazy gamer that plays games to relax, not to workout. In the case of Red Steel 2 though, I actually really got into the game thanks to this feature.

Jason Vandenberghe, creative director on Red Steel 2, truly believes in the controls of his upcoming game. So much so that he thinks it's the coolest Wii feature ever:

One of the core features [of Red Steel 2] is that the harder you swing, the more damage you do. It’s really cool. We know how hard you swing. So you can’t just play the game like this (demonstrates by shaking his hands really quickly).

This does not function for Red Steel 2. You’ve got to do this (swings out arms hard). Now you don’t have to throw your damn arm out [laughs]! You don’t have to, (swings arms out hard and grunting loudly). But you have to actually get your arms in the throw. We think we’ve defeated the waggle.

… this is the coolest Wii feature ever, for me … This is always what I wanted to do with the Wii … I think this is what the Wii is for, personally. Bam! Just that feeling. When I saw it, I thought “Dude, this is the coolest thing I have ever seen on the Wii.” I want to get this out to the fans and to myself. I want to play it!
You could really tell that Jason was extremely passionate about his game. So does Red Steel 2 defeat the waggle? I think so. You can still swing the Wiimote lightly to inflect some minor damage, but you will need to swing the controller with some force to actually get through the game.

Check out my preview for Red Steel 2 from earlier today to find out more about the game. How do you all feel about this? Do you like or hate that you have to really get your arms moving to play Red Steel 2?

Waggle is defined as "short quick motions", so now Red Steel 2 is giving us "long slow motions". Another type of waggle? I'd say so. From what I played of it, I felt like the long slashes were very finicky in my opinion. Sometimes I did a perfect motion for a long slash, and it didn't do it correctly.

Also, my arms did get tired, but I played it after an intense Wii Sports Resort fencing game with a fierce Australian gentleman, haha.

Once a single player game is released, unless its got mad secrets or wicked sales, it tends to leave the frontpage blogosphere altogether, everywhere. Which is natural.

Then it moves onto the sidebar, where c-bloggers hype it where warranted.

Re the actual article: if its pulling me in and the motion controls are not just arbitrary replacements where a button press could do better, I think waggle is most definitely being defeated.

Throwing grenades in Metal Slug Anthology is re-dang-diculous. Unnecessary and lame.

Shaking off ... things ... in Uncharted? makes sense, isn't over used. well done.

Also, Tiger 10 made me a believer.

Didn't Burch say it was unresponsive?

It's his job to hype the game. He goes to a ton of events, often with free swag, food and drink, and companies like Ubisoft expect these write ups from him when he returns.

It's a lot of pressure when a top PR exec asks "so, when is the write up going live? We're looking forward to reading it".

No multi-player. No blood. Excessive amounts of posts in one day about whats looking like to be a crap sequel to a crap game.

How about banning the spammers/advertisers in the c-blogs?

Shit, ignore that comment from Dtoid staff. That came from me. I said:
It's still waggle-heavy. The only difference is that your waggles need to be much more forceful now.

We'll see when we play it, I guess. Sounds like I'd get sick of playing after awhile.

@magnalon: It's not my job to hype up the game more so than it is to talk about the game. As in, I wouldn't be hyping up the game if I was talking crap about it ;). I really think the controls work, compared to non-Motion Plus controls.

Cadtalfryn: Sorry, didn't realize you didn't like content on the front page. We should never ever update the front page. Ever.

And what spammers? You mean the ones that were already taken care of?

I immediately thought of an additional sentence to add following my comment and forgot to get around to it.

"You should also trust that if Hamza liked the game, he'd display his honest opinion on it with his write-up".

I do have to wonder whether, after Wii Sports Resort's fencing game, the swordfighting here is going to really excite me. It does sound good as described, but it still hasn't sold me on the game as a whole, especially considering that the swordplay seems to be the main thing that the game has going for it.

Eh, sorry to jump on you there. I'm just really irascible about the Red Steel franchise. A bunch of my friends went out and bought it on release because of the hype they bought into. We were all genuinely disappointed, and since we all have modest incomes , to put it lightly, we didn't go out or have much fun as a group or have much fun around our Wii's either. I guess reading multiple posts in a row about a series I've already built up a lot of contempt for, while there are other games out there that aren't getting any attention, made me a bit tempered.

I hope it turns out well and glad you're enjoying i, but if it turns out oddly similar to the first one and isn't exactly well received at large I won't be too terribly surprised.

I hope this game doesn't feel broken like the first one.... I still have doubts but so far it looks good.

Personally, I loved the first one. And I'll be reserving judgment until the game comes out.

Just saying...

Cadtalfryn: No worries. I understand the anger in regards to the first game. I was worried about that too and from what little I played of it so far, I can say it's better. I mean, I wasn't horrified by the characters arm's like in the first game so it's not as bad, haha

The controls...my god the controls. That's probably part of the reason why I've been playing the Conduit nonstop for the last week straight, as opposed to pounding my head against the wall with Red Steel 1.

But, well if they improved those the game should be much less frustrating at any rate...that's half way there.

It's just kind of tough to imagine a FPS without any sort of multi-player these days.

@Magnalon:
Did your father build you a swing facing the wall? It's the Wii. Yes, you're going to have to move. Dear god, it's the end of the world!

So now we have to swing the wiimore and nunchuck around from the cord again to "fight", but just swing it harder? YAY!

I was saying it was unnecessarily elongated in terms of the motion needed to play the game.

Actually, most Wii games you can play while on the couch (what I refer to as "wank waggling"). I lazily shook the remote to play Zelda, and other such games, but Red Steel 2 was bordering uncomfortable.

I don't know. I might tire myself out swinging it that hard just to use my heavy attacks. It'd be nice if they added the option where you can press a button to change between light; medium; or heavy swings no matter how fast or slow you swing the wiimote.

Wow.

Don't get me wrong man, I totally get what you're saying and I honestly appreciate having options in my control schemes.

But seriously? A designer comes up with a control set that does more than the lazy waggle (ie, half hearted moves without depth and little meaning) and someone's asking them to tone it down? Like asking for a motor on a bike that just got rigged with gears! :)

But for real, I get you. Its just funny.
