Red Steel 2 announced, my roommate cringes in horror photo

The French site LiveWii brings word that UbiSoft has announced that they are making Red Steel 2. According to the article, they're justifying making the second game by saying that they're completely reworking the sword system. There's no announcement yet as to whether or not the game will support online play or anything, but there should be more details rolling out soon.

I believe I'm the staff member who has played the most of Red Steel (~70% of the game), I actually do want to see how much of an overhaul they can give this game, and possibly turn it into something worthwhile. They really need to take their time and pull out all the stops on this, otherwise UbiSoft will be losing tons of fans for wasting money on this. Apart from the sword system, which can get mind-numbingly boring, they need to make sure the horrible rubber-arm graphics and still-shot cutscenes are done with.

So, with this little information available, who wants to start making predictions on the game's score? Oh, and sorry Necros, you will have to endure me playing this game next year, and forcing you to watch.

[Thanks for the tips, Blindside and Joe! You were within seconds of each other for this]

Hopefully they can do more with the sequel since they're not being tied to launch, but I won't be holding my breath. I still want to give the first one a rent one of these days.

I hope they fucking dith the Unreal Engine 2.5 and use a better engine.. Also, I hope they use real cut scence instead of the comic style of cuts.

One more thing they better get the same people who did the music from the last one too..

I kind of expected this. It will probably be better than the first one. I hope.

They should be forced to play Trespasser for a week straight. That should solve the rubber arm syndrome they had in the first Red Steel.

Also, a new design for the menus would be cool. Something that doesn't involve dragging small, blurry neon signs to bigger blurry neon signs.

I'm expecting that this is what they wanted out of RS1, but couldn't flesh out due to the launch window. I doubt anything spectacular will come out of it, but it'd be hard to imagine that they'd make a sequel without good reason considering how poorly received the first one was.

Played through and beat Red Steel... more because I got it at launch and I was taking breaks from Zelda, but none-the-less I did play through it. In some ways it really impressed me, some of the graphics looked so damn impressive, pillars blowing up and crazy particle and light effects; but it was very hit or miss, sometimes looking next gen and other times looking like a N64 game. At first the sword fighting was fun, but soon I was just twitching the nun-chuck and wii-mote cause the timing was all that mattered. Then there was the aiming, I could look past the terrible IR that caused the cursor to jerk like a meth-head picking bugs. Of course, the bullet-time mode saved it and let you slay the groups of guys quick while looking cool.

Sadly, the few things Ubisoft did right couldn't outweigh the many bugs, lacking graphics, and a aiming system that makes you want to perform Seppuku... aka fall on that sword you carry everywhere just in case someone decides guns are just too easy and needs a sword fight.

I mean really, how could not one person who produced or played the game before release notice that every time the game loaded something when playing the cursor jumped around like it was possessed.

That said, there was A LOT of potential in Red Steel, and it was a release title, surely rushed to meet the date. I think with a reasonable schedule, a decent team, and a somewhat decent engine to build off of, it could actually be a killer title if done right....

but it won't be done right, it'll be another flop cause they won't change enough and will try to cash in on the "sequel" aspect... Guessing 6/10

Red Steel gets a bad rap, I think. I thought it was quite a bit of alright, actually. That doesn't mean I don't think it has it's flaws, but for the most part, Ubi did a pretty good job.

It definitely could've used about 3 or 4 months of polish, and the MP should've been re-worked (perhaps a co-op mode?), but overall, I think the game is quite good.

It's not $60 good. But if I found it for say, $30, I'd seriously consider picking it up.

I just hope that Ubi remembers what they did wrong w/ Red Steel, and that they correct that w/ Red Steel 2 and finally give us the FPS that we deserve.

i never thought this game deserved the bad rap it got. i think the reason so many people didn't like it is it got overhyped.

also so many people try and play the game always doing the slow aiming no matter where they are, if you play it normal and only do the slow aiming when you are shooting and let go to switch to another guy the game works fairly well.

Score prediction: 5.0. That's from RevAnthony though, because I know he actually understands the ten point system. Everybody else will give it a seven.

red steel had to be the most dissapointing game i have ever played. it was the first wii shooter and was supposed to be real cool but the controls were shotty and the graphics sucked. i mean, the shooting controls are better in re4 wii addition. i hope they change a lot in the new one, including a different turning control and unlimited use of the sword.

predicted score? 7.5 mediocre.

CURSES! A POX UPON YOUR KIN!

DMV, I'm open to enjoying this sequel, provided they fix, oh, everything from the first game. Remember, I wanted to like it, and actually bought a copy (kept in shrinkwrap) prior to review scores, so if they fulfill what they originally promised in the first game, I'd be all in.

Oh, and no more rubber arm.
