Red Faction: Guerrilla announced, promises even more destruction than before photo

If you haven't been thoroughly impressed by the destructible environments found in this generation of games so far, the mere mention of a technologically advanced, high-def Red Faction might put a menacing smile on your face.

Rumors have been flying left and right about Red Faction: Guerrilla, but it wasn't until today that THQ officially announced the third title in the destruction-based shooter series. Unlike the previous games, however, RF: G is a third-person shooter (phew!).

Speaking about Volition's latest project, Brad Carraway, the director of global brand management for THQ, had this to say: "With the game's unique pairing of true physics-based destruction, fast-paced guerrilla warfare style combat, and a massive world to explore - Red Faction: Guerrilla will redefine the limits of open-world gaming."

Now if only we had some in-game footage to back all of that up. For the time being, I'm pumped. Red Faction: Guerrilla is coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in 2009. Anybody else excited?

I played the first Red Faction on PS2 way back when. It was a hell of a lot of fun but by the time the sequel came about I had moved on to bigger and better things.

I'll be sure to keep on eye on this game and if it has what it takes, I'm in.

I'd tap that except my 360 broke and my PS3 is a PS3.

I hope those leaked screen shots were early then because this makes them sound more legit (because of the 3rd person view).

I'm all for destruction though.

The first game was excellent. The second game was rubbish.

Let's hope they do better the third time.

I played the hell out of the second one and thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of time wasted in split screen multiplayer. Can't wait.

I loved the first and parts of the second. But third-person? Makes me a bit nervous...

I hope they've learned how to make non-repetitive level design (RF1) and non-sucky games (RF2) in the meantime. The Punisher, however, which was a Volition game, was awesome, so I'll hold out hope.

@DaedHead8: My thoughts exactly. I hope this game is good, but frankly, the destructible environments have been done a number of times since the original Red Faction in 2001, so they’re going to have to up their game.

Loved the first and second one. Remember blasting the shit out of multiplayer levels and making huge tunnels. Those where the days.....

The first one was average IMO despite the destructible terrain. The second one was absolute trash

Despite the Red Faction series never being anything better than bland, I LOVE the fact that the whole revolution can be traced back to just one guy who nobody knows or remembers who was the first to tell a guard to get fucked and knocked a gun out of his hands. I love that shit.

They should seriously consider renaming the series to what it really is. Tunnel Diggin' 3™. I am already sold.

I loved the second Red Faction...it was better in every way, especially the split screen multi-player. It's still one of my favorite FPSs.

Well if they are going to switch to third person, they should at least remake the first game.Same story, better graphics, rearranged levels, online multiplayer and then who really needs number 3?Especially after number 2 sucked so bad it destroyed any credibility the first one garnered for being so original.

Are we still that impressed by destructible environments any more? At this point, it's more noticeable if they don't implement it well.

After all the hype, Red Faction did kinda...suck. Anyone been following the hilarious 'Hammer Guy' thread on GAF after screenshots from this were leaked lol.

The screenshots were real, they're in the newest GI. It's not too pretty, but apparently everthing really can be destroyed.

the first Red Faction was kind of neat, but the second one gave me leprosy. I'll reserve judgement until we see product.

what justification would there be for requiring an original proof of purchase? The warranty extends past the to-date lifespan of the system already so there is no other reason than to make the customer jump through hoops hoping they can save a few bucks by kicking them to the curb. If 10% can't come through with a receipt thats a helluva lot of cash they don't have to part with.
