Red 360 controller comes with charger and large price tag photo

I'm not normally one to be overly interested in a controller of all things, but this sexy new red Xbox 360 pad has caught my eye. A limited edition run, this new pad boasts a shiny paint job and the new Play & Charge cable for easy recharging. Plus it now matches the color of your console's inevitable red rings! The peripheral and charge cable will set you back $64.99.

We already heard about a controller with an improved D-Pad hitting Europe this year, but it's not known if the design specs are the same as this one, which doesn't mention anything about a new D-Pad. Either way, here's the full sales pitch from Microsoft:

  • Limited Edition red finish, with newly designed black accents
  • Bundled with a Play & Charge Cable and matching red rechargeable battery pack
  • 2.4GHz wireless technology with 30-foot range
  • Use up to four controllers simultaneously on one console
  • Integrated headset port for Xbox Live play
  • Adjustable vibration feedback for longer battery life
  • New left and right shoulder buttons are designed for ease of use
  • Use the Xbox 360 Guide button to keep track of your friends, access your games and media, or power on and off your Xbox 360 console
Anybody interested in this? Since the controller is red, you should be able to enjoy three times more control over your videogames, but without word on the D-Pad, it may be wise to hold out and see if that improvement is present, or at least coming over from Europe at some point. Dtoider Max Power points out that a lot of these specs, including the "new" shoulder buttons, are displayed on all Xbox 360 controllers throughout its Web site, so this is likely just a respray with the new cable. Note to Micrsoft: WE WANT D-PAD!

I can see your point, but I can't say I actually use the DPad for anything other than switching tracks in GTA/SR, or changing weapons in Oblivion.

I use the shoulder buttons way more.

Still, no reason they couldn'tve fixed the DPad while they had the chance.

It looks pretty good, too. Might consider getting one, since my 2nd controller is on the way out.

Out of all the things to improve, they leave out the D-pad? The shoulder buttons are fine as they are in my opinion.

What's wrong with the shoulder buttons that needed fixing? The d-pad is unusable, the shoulder buttons work well enough. Without a d-pad fix, 100% not worth it.

I'm confused, too. What was wrong with the shoulder buttons?

I just noticed that it says this for every 360 controller on the Xbox.com page. So I suppose this has been a marketing pitch from way back when the 360 was introduced to advertise the changes from the Xbox controller. Sooo, no redesign at all. Just a different colour.

Plus it now matches the color of your console's inevitable red rings!

That made me laugh my ass off.

Anyway, I'm picking this up if only for the sole purpose of loving red to an obsessive degree. Communism!

Red and green should never be fuckign seen. Looks totally shite. Anyway if you want a good coloured pad just take it apart and spray it yourself. A half dozen mates of mine who have no experience in painting or electronics did it and they look sick. Gold and Black, Silver and red, good stuff and its way cheaper.

CHAR CUSTOM CONTROLLER

Does it work 3 times faster? Because that'd really help me in Soul Calibur 4...

I need a 2nd controller so I'm interested. But only if that D-pad is improved.

Get the lime green one in time for the new PES!!
Ive read the new d-pad needs to have software patch for it to really make a difference as it has 32 points or some shit...il still get it and hopefully SF2 HD will be awesome!
The L and R buttons are difficult to get use to at first, so if they have made them more spongy or moved them back that would be swell!!

If Warhammer has taught me one thing, it's that painting things red makes them go faster.

@TorpedoTed: No new shoulder buttons, presumably. See above. Sorriez.

It's a bit pricey for my liking, but I use my 360 controller for old crap and Audiosurf anyway. If this one's D-pad is fixed, though... maybe.

I just felt obligated to comment here, with the Char reference and all. Well done. I really need a second controller, but $65 is pushing it. Then again, it does look really cool...

I guess it's worth it to just hold out for the eventual d-pad redesign.

I'd just like to point out that the "Large price tag" isn't something new. On day one of the Black 360 controller they had a package that came with the play & charge kit and retailed for $69.99. Just thought I'd let you know.

GOD DAMMIT

I bought my Black controller because I wanted one, and now I want this and the charge kit. But GOD that's expensive.

Meh, I should just use one of the many customization tutorials for the controllers and buy a spare white one.
