Recession: Industry bounces back, except Wii photo

I'm really tired of all the recession talk, so I'm glad it's under the bridge as far as the game industry goes. Analysts are saying that games are back in the black, thanks to the new PS3, Halo: ODST, Rock Band: Beatles and more.

Consoles are back as well. Sales of the Xbox 360 increased a little bit, and thanks to the new console and the price drop, the PS3 increased a lot. Both Wedbush Morgan and EEDAR are expecting that over 400,000 PS3s were sold last month. Software is also up for September, thanks to the previously mentioned titles, and others like Batman: Arkham Asylum, Guitar Hero 5, and Wii Sports Resort.

Speaking of the Wii, that's the only thing that isn't up post-recession slump. In fact, WedBush Morgan says that sales will be down 43% from last year's. Nothing lasts forever, Nintendo.

They've still got Christmas.

I don't think nin is worried, they've sold so much already that the nintendo money pile must be bigger than the atlantic ocean at this point,

"Wii down 43% from last year's"

Well when you sell 687,000 units in September 2008, being down 43% is still almost 400,000 units. So is it really all that bad? Nintendo's just not living up to its amazing standards that they set last year, that's all.

Yeah...not a huge surprise. Everybody who wants one has one, everybody who doesn't...isn't going to buy one, even with a $50 price drop (seriously, it should have dropped to $150).
Though I bet it'll sell like hotcakes come christmas.

Given Nintendo's sales from last year, I think 'down' was about the only direction they could go in. So yeah, pretty much what everyone else has said already.

Just because sales aren't increasing doesn't mean the Wii loses...it's still moving an awful lot of units. And this doesn't say anything about handhelds. I'm sure the DS is still selling shitloads.

Also, I love the header. It's adorable and depressing at the same time.

Wow, are you THAT happy that the Wii's sales are down?

The recession had nothing to do wht this, as far as I can see. Everyone on the planet has already bought a Wii, whether they kept it or not. That means Nintendo got their money -- Sales down or not, they're filthy fucking rich.

Believe it or not, this is exactly what I was hoping for. I really enjoy the Wii, but that's exactly why Nintendo needs to keep heading into a downward spiral of less money. They really NEED a kick in the ass and as they begin to sell less and less consoles, Nintendo and developers working on the Wii will need to start putting more and more effort into their games to make money rather than the Wii itself.

So hopefully, this marks the end of the near complete lack of a worthwhile game library on the Wii.

I think I'll say something along the lines of Nintendo sales are down because everyone has one already. Has anyone mentioned that yet?

There are still people like me who are waiting to get a Wii, just because I don't have the time to play it right now. The same goes for the PS3. And let's not forget that there are kids that were too little to get a Wii last year that are going to be getting one this year. I doubt Nintendo is in any danger of losing its lead, even on a monthly basis.

It's funny how bad news for Nintendo means selling neck-and-neck with Sony/Microsoft. Good thing those three video games systems don't consider each other competition.

Yeah, I find it really odd how destructoid and the rest of the industry seems to think Sony and Microsoft are doing well when neither company has yet to match Nintendo in a slump. Sony and Microsoft have been underperforming for so long that if either of them were solely a game company, they would be bankrupt.

Come to think of it, why aren't their gaming departments defunct? I know that Microsoft is in the market to protect it's gaming computer sales from Sony, but Sony's gaming department nearly took the rest of Sony with it with the PS3. And Sony's gaming department is still doing rather poorly when you consider that they still have to sell the hardware for under cost with a %50 reduction in price over a scant 3 years.

i couldn't agree more. at this point of the gamecube's life, i had at least double the amount of games in my collection. come on nintendo, bring out the games! it's obvious that the only third party support you're going to get is on wii ware, otherwise, it's all you.

@ Bobyoko- I guess it depends on what kind of games you like.

I loved the Gamecube's first part library, but I think the Wii's is better. Galxay > Sunshine, Brawl > Melee, etc. Plus, there are just more first party Nintendo games on the Wii. Almost every Nintendo property, from Fire Emblem to Super Mario Bros, has gotten as much if not more representation on the Wii than on the Gamecube.

The only first party Gamecube games that really haven't been equaled or outdone on the Wii yet are Wind Waker, Pikmin 2, F-Zero GX, and Luigi's Mansion. That said, the Wii is getting Sin and Punishment 2, which is pretty god damn awesome.

So yeah, I see some things that were better about the GC's first party line up, but over all I think the Wii has it beat.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Wii MUST HAVE a saturation point.

Surely after this many years of enormous sales, everyone who wants a Wii will have one by now! or at least will have one soon. Right?

The sheer amount of people I know, with friends of friends of friends who all have Wii's (99% of which only ever play WiiFit - kill me please) is astounding. If they all played REAL games and played online, the Wii could be a brilliantly social console. The problem is that they don't, they simply use it as the modern version of a Mr Motivator VHS (Cheesy British Work out guy).

It's a shame really, it's a decent platform, but it's just been flooded with "Casual" shit, and is known mostly for such casual shit.

Monster Hunter is going to be epic, but i personally think it will fall flat over here in the West, simply because 99% of Wii owners don't want games! They want fitness shit and perhaps a little bit of silly Mii sports collections.

Not real games.

Sure there's that 1 in 100 that actually uses the Wii for gaming, and perhaps the Wiifitter's Kids will want some games, but it's not the 100% of users want games situation that other consoles enjoy.
