This latest trailer explains the close combat in Aliens vs. Predator. Ironically, the video only tells you the Xbox 360 controls, which already has a control layout in the demo. The demo that really needs help with the controls, the PC version, has been left high and dry. You're just going to have to guess the keys for that one.
Anyway, if you've been getting hacked to pieces too many times, this video will show you how to deal with a close encounter. It's all about the block button. Yes, we didn't know there was one either until someone outside of the demo pointed it out to us.
People are starting to get the hang of counters and blocking in the demo, which is starting to annoy me as it's getting harder to win matches. I don't like being challenged, least of all by smartass Predators who think they're cool just because they look like insectoid Bob Marleys.

'Our game doesn't suck, you just aren't playing it right.'
this. tho people that spam heavy attacks (or with preds, the disc) annoy me a bit more. those should have a cool down time
btw this game is awesome. At first I was pissed because Q is run do not let this dissuade you
This video is good, because it will only get more fun as more people figure out how to play. It is a little more complex than, say, cod, if only because the species have totally different play styles, and this puts a lot of people off right away. Which is unfortunate because it is really a great game.
Honestly it doesn't matter what I play either. Though I find that the Alien suffers deaths far easier than Marine or Predator. So there's a slight balance issue there. Lets just say I could be pulling in Choppers all day if this was COD as Pred and Marine, but as Alien I might get a care package.
@tvirusgetz I actually agree the disc is no energy where as the others are, it makes no sense to use them. Though I see the laser as a sniper rifle aka not to be used except with a lot of space. The combi-stick also has a longer range than the disc.
Maybe the disc is just to good in narrow corridors, in another map it might not fair so well. Hell it bounces of the walls and creates an instant human blender.
I think cloaking should use one energy each time it's activated. That would help. Marines also need to be balanced though. Maybe though accuracy balancing someone should be able to full blast that thing and hit someone at maximum distances.
The demo should have come with some sort of tutorial to give potential buyers a better idea of what the game actually is, rather then leaving them to fend for themselves and try and figure out the game. That just makes people frustrated and not interested in the full game.
I also think that Aliens need some kind of stealth buff. Hell, all I had to do was turn up my brightness as a marine and they might as well have been neon green. Maybe when they are in shadows they should become more translucent to ward of people doing exactly what I did. But really, what marine would actually use that pathetic flash light any way.
Doesn't get it.
Also on my previous post I mean "should not be able to full blast". Also a quick fix if Rebellion is watching, Aliens could benefit from ALIENS ONLY tunnels, aka only enough space for one alien to fit in and move around. This would give them potential escapes. Of course this means modding all the maps.
Marines need lower damage at longer distance (blaster/default), flame and shotgun need to be upped in power. Sniper rifle although good needs to up it's active ammo by 3. Also needs flares in ALL maps and flares should distort Preds vision.
Predator Laser attack needs to use less energy, cloaking needs to use energy one bar.
Oh, and that music was awful.
Just be smart enough to not ejecute an enemy while there are others around. Or press "Ñ", both works.
I remapped my sprint key "Q" to "X".
Maybe it just worked for me, idk.
ive run into a few people who work together in the demo. its funny cuz they stil suck. i was playing as an alien when i ran into these 2 preds that teamed up. still slaughtered em tho. marines are a bit tougher to deal with but not if you know what your doing.
Ayuh
if they are clumped up, you can plasma blast them. i did this several times to my friends tonight.
the boomerang blade is great from behind or a quick flick if they are coming at ya fast (aliens love this =) ).
a lone alien will have a tough time against one marine with his back against the wall. but aliens can lie in wait perfectly still on a ceiling in a corridor and kill anyone who walks below. as long as they dont look up, but you also want to be in shadow.
i know some marines cranking up their brightness/contrast so they can see in the darkness better, which is lame. they admitted to it when asked, but what are you gonna do... just be a predator next time :)
Graphics have no polish at all.
The hallways look like Doom 3.
The resolution looks like 1280x1020
All said, extremely disappointed.
Just outright not fun.
Funny, because I remember going into the options menu and changing key settings to left and right, with separate bindings for the different races.
Oh well, I must have imagined it all.
Just playing that demo made me feel like it was the 90's again, and I was playing Doom. This killed it for me, because I became sick of dark futuristic hexagonal corridors years ago. We are used to a mixture of open and closed environments in our games now. The previous demo before AvP was Bad Company 2, and what a fucking contrast there is and how much the FPS genre has evolved over the years. I'm kinda done with fragfests, its about team play, now.
I'm going to wait for Aliens Colonial Marines, because that I pray will be more fleshed out, forward thinking and my cup of tea, than what this game has become. I want smart rifles, nukes, rpgs, sharp sticks, centry guns, use of drop ships and APCs, team based play and various locals from the comics etc. Frankly, once again this AvP game is too movie based as far as I'm concerned, so itll be picked up cheap.
These three very different species need their own games, not a one fits all package.
Today I will play as the Predator :-) Oh yesh. Though probably will o back to the Alien.
I already have a party of friends for this game lol
You do know that this only a demo and, as such, it offers only a single map and one gametype intentionally? The full game will not only most likely have "mixed" environments", but species-based team play has already been confirmed.
Your complaints are about as valid as someone bitching that BF:BC 2 is only open fields and snow, and then yammering about how that's "so 2000". It's a demo and thus is an extremely limited sampling of the actual game.
Are they doing a single player demo at all?
And thanks to the video I now have a handle on using the counters.
It only works well in 1v1. Someone else shows up, he's going to kill one of you very very easily.
That said, I do like the melee system, it works very well.
