Really? Wii Sports Resort, MotionPlus top Amazon sales photo

Seriously? Are people really beating down doors for the upcoming Wii accessory Wii MotionPlus and the new game Wii Sports Resort? They haven't even played it yet, but somehow the device and game are ranked on Amazon.com's top-selling games list as number 10 and number 3 respectively. As preorders.

Is 1:1 motion sensing and Mii sword fighting really that big of a deal? This is just as silly as when people freaked the hell out about getting the Wii Wheel for Mario Kart Wii. Am I missing something here?

Nintendo really does print money. July will be a good month for them, as the game releases on the 26th at $50. It only comes with one Wii MotionPlus sensor, so the sales of each $20 perpherial should be pretty strong, too. That's at least $70 per taker, then.

Damn. I so should have bought Nintendo stock back in the day.

Old people and girls ("casuals" to media outlets) vote with their wallets.

This is a common exchange at a Gamestop involving an old person:

"Hello welcome to Gamestop! I see you're buying a Wii points card!"

"Yea, my nephew likes some of those old games, but I really like my Wii Fit! It's hip and makes me feel good!"

"Oh really? Well you can reserve Wii Fit 2 already, and there's another really cool game coming out called Wii Sports Resort!"

"Wow! A resort? I've always wanted to get away!"

"Well now you can! Just put a simple $5 on it, and you'll be guaranteed! Remember how you couldn't find a Wii Fit for months when it came out? Not with preorders!"

"Wow! I can't wait to play this! It sounds really cool! I wonder if my nephew will like it!"

Nintendo can thank pushy (obvious) sales techniques and old people who will drop $140 on Wii Fit 2 and Resort, only to play it for a day or so in a month's span.

So when you spend money companies don't track it? It must be hard to hear things over the sound of you being so awesome.

I'm excited for 1:1 sword fighting. It was one of the reasons I ever got interested in the Wii. It'll definitely be more fun than drunk wii boxing.

Wiimotion+ I can understand completely. Wii Sports Resort? Not quite as much.

But yeah, 1:1 motion sensing IS that big of a deal. I'm not sure how you can compare it to the Wii wheel. That's one of the stupider comparisons I've seen in recent times.

One has the potential to completely revamp the way games are played on the Wii... and the other is a piece of plastic.

Great comparison.

The Wii like gold. Everyone wants it, but it has no actual value once you think about it.

In other news, 2 and a Half Men is still the #1 comedy in America, and "NOW That's What I Call Music" is still at the tops of the charts in music.

People like shit.

Well... the first Wii Sport was very fun to play. I don't see what the problem is with Wii Sports 2. I would understand such an article about really bad games, but this one is going to be a good one.

On the other hand I'm definitely against pre orders and online shopping. It kills all the fun of seeking/buying a game at your local retailer.

Who cares? If people want to buy it, there's nothing from stopping them doing it. Why make a big stink about people who have different tastes?

At this point I'm conviced nintendo can literally sell millions of boxes of crap as long as it has the word Wii on it.

And nintendos market consist of casual gamers doesn't it, since when do casual gamers make rabid pre-orders.

What kind of mass hypnotism machine is nintendo using?

If Nintendo had have shipped two MotionPlus devices in the box with this, and kept it at the same price, i'd have definitely brought this straight away. Without that second add-on though, the most important aspect of this game is stripped out from the retail disc...

It's not even as if we can get it cheaper second hand either, since the MotionPlus will no doubt not be in there..

I wish they wouldn't rip us off so often, but it's what Nintendo have been expert at over the last few years. Though in my experience I cant say its anything new: I still had to pay £40 for Gamecube games, when the PS2 versions of them (or exclusives) often cost half the price..

So many Wii haters out there. Doesn't surprise me.

People shouldn't underestimate Wii Sports though.

The game sold 3 million copies in Japan alone and the impact its had as a system-seller title in North America and Europe is undeniable. In addition, the Mii craze caused a bit of a cultural phenomeon hiting mainstream media and the game went on to become the best selling game
ever. (being a bundled game still counts since Super Mario Bros did it too)

The sequel's got the "Wii" brand power in addition to offer up to 10 games and of course, M+ support. I smell another potential evergreen, system-seller title on the way.

MotionPlus is going to be great. Improved accuracy and expanding the Wii's capabilities. 2009 is looking mighty fine.

At this rhythm, the next Nintendo system capabilities could surpass today's technology in graphics or interactivity.

I'm preordering. Wii sports still gets played at my house. WSR will likely be near as good. The value is much higher than $60 for a game I beat in 20 hrs and never play again. And I'm getting motionplus because it is the real hope and change in this country.
