This has to be the collector in me saying this, but whenever I or someone I know misplaces a game box (usually the latter), forcing me to forever hold onto a loose disc, it drives me up the walls.
Not to the point where I go out and specifically buy a green- or white-colored case, yet it's still annoying at any rate. The Netflix streaming Blu-ray disc falls somewhere into this scenario, and since they will remain a requirement for some time, Kotaku reader Nulion has come up with a solution.
Agreeing that paper is no way to contain the raw power of streaming movies, Nulion whipped up faux cover art intended for PlayStation 3 cases. Hell, it even comes complete with an ESRB rating. It's so legit, it doesn't even make any sense!
And if you find yourself with the itch to print out more custom videogame slip covers, The Cover Project comes highly recommended as a swanky resource for that sort of thing. Do it, assuming your printer can handle the job.

"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
How much would that have cost? Honestly? Shipping would've been the same, cases are probably a cent a pop, inserts for the cases might be five cents. So six cents each plus whatever shipping they already pay. Big whoop. Netflix is barebones enough that I'm sure they'd have the cash to spare.
I'm not upset over it. I just think it's cheap and lazy when you're asking people to hold on to the disc for as long as they want to use Netflix since Sony has already said they're in no rush to integrate it into the PS3.
The Netflix streaming Blu-ray disc
I'm assuming Blu-Ray.

Shameless self-promotion.
shipping a dvd case even in bulk rate as priority mail is a couple of bucks a pop whereas just the dvd is bulk business rate which is slightly cheaper than a letter- so it would prolly be something like 4 top 5 times the cost to ship it in a case
@Takeshi
they don't see the psn cards in cases here, at least I have never seen one- they are usually either in cardboard backings or those evil sealed plastic packages
Since I believe the rental movies ship in the same paper sleeves I'm assuming that its actually cheaper to ship it this way rather then having/buying a bunch of cases and inserts to put them in. My understanding is that they use a bulk shipping model in the same way I believe they use a bulk model for their packaging. You actually stated it best yourself when you said "Netflix is barebones".
While it might be cheap in our eyes but they have a bottom line to watch either way. They're supplying the disk in order to provide a sincere gesture to those people who have a Netflix subscription and happen to have a PS3, While Sony, as per your statement, isnt in a rush to supply the firmware update to allow the service to stream the same way Xbox users have it. The disk, and the programming to make it work, is probably coming out of their pockets and not Sony's.
They could have just told every one who wanted one to make a one time payment for the disks considering the deal with Sony probably isn't netting them any money yet. In otherwords: Take it and like it, its free.
It is a Blu Ray. It uses the BD-Live functionality to connect to the Netflix servers.
