Strap yourself in folks, because we have an utter shocker for you. Microsoft has turned the industry on its head by making the
surprise prediction that
Resident Evil 5 and
Final Fantasy XIII will sell more Xbox 360 copies than PS3 copies.
Gamespot asked the "big three" companies how they interpret February's sales numbers. Nintendo and Sony both spoke highly of the industry, looking at the rising game sales of last month as evidence that videogames are still proving rather resilient to the current economic troubles. Microsoft, however, could not help yet another dig at Sony, claiming that titles previous associated with PlayStation are now triumphing on the Xbox 360.
"We're happy with the performance of Street Fighter IV on Xbox 360," claimed an MS rep. "It follows in the steps of franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Madden NFL which have historically been associated with PlayStation, that are now selling better on our platform." The rep followed with the claim that RE5 and FFXIII would find superior sales on the 360.
Sarcasm aside, I find it amusing that Microsoft is a dog with a bone with it comes to Sony, almost obsessed with keeping up this console war and unable to resist namedropping its rival even in a subject as benign as this. At this rate, I expect Microsoft to start blogging about everything Sony does, saying such biting things as "Sony sucks" and "the PlayStation is a bad console actually." Sony might never recover from such a scathing blog.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Instead of answering said questions there taking pot shots at sony with predictions that have little or no chance of happening. this kind of BS is part of the reason the gaming industry receives so little respect.
MS are a business and a business does well not to compliment or praise it's competitors. You're not going to get Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo openly admit any weakness or the strenghts of the other companies.
Not to mention that when I or my friends play the 360, the damn thing overheats and crashes at least once a night. Getting pretty sick of that.
"Xbox 360 continues to be the first choice for gamers. With games which have historically been associated with PlayStation, selling a lot better in our system. We are happy to announce we have sold 5 million DISCS of ff13 easily shadowing PS3's million sold. Shipping over 5 times more discs than our competitor, its clear that gamers prefer DVDs as they media of choice instead of bluray. We expect this trend to grow as we start to ship 6,7 or 8 times the discs of our competition."
Doesn't matter to Microsoft. They will just not include Japan in their victory announcement.
I'm going to hold off any actual praise/disappointment until the game comes out on both consoles, but I really don't think people will pick FFXIII up for the 360 over the PS3 if they have the choice. The guys at Microsoft really need to stop thinking they have absolutely every single gamer on Earth on their side.
Reggie knows what he is doing.
I have to admit. I did buy some games for my 360. And I fear downloading more arcade games because I refuse to buy a larger HDD to store them. One would actually say that I have a decent library of 360 games. But yet the PS3 has lately become my console of choice because I fear that my 360 will RROD on me at seemingly any random moment.
Just the thought of having to send my 360 in for repairs once again irritates me greatly. I wish I could shove the comments they had on little slips when I first got it, right back in their face. The papers thanked me for "investing" in an Xbox 360. All that jazz about continued entertainment just didn't add up. Games were nice. I wished the 360 had an HDMI port, back when I got mine. When the new 360's started coming out with built in HDMI ports, even on the version I bought, I have to admit that I felt slighted. I felt like I "invested" too soon, and just received a notice from Microsoft telling me to "buy a new 360 or get over it".
And when my 360 RROD'd on me, I sent it in. Though they refused to tell me what went wrong with it, or if they were going to upgrade it in any way. To this day, I still wish that I could pay a small fee to get a swapout with a new 360 that has the HDMI port built in. As truly, there is a difference between a direct digital connection and an adaptor.
I just don't know what's going on with this generations consoles. I expected various versions of my handhelds, but not my consoles man. That builds up in cost awfully fast.
Note: Not saying that they haven't or have not for a long time. Merely that I just can't remember how long ago it was.
Than gamer blog communities act all uppity about it when their the ones that eat this up.
Two people, teams, companies, countries can be in competition in a single market. Doesn't mean they have to act like unprofessional douchebags. It's usually frowned upon in areas even outside of gaming.
See, I never had a problem with my 360 and the dreaded red rings. All 3 just simply refused to play anything one day, usually 1-3 months outside of warranty. Call me crazy but when I purchase a system, I expect it to last longer than a year. I used to have buyers remorse from my PS3 since i've used it to play more PS2 games than anything else, but you can't argue with quality hardware.
Businesses are totally professional about competition, all except Sony and Microsoft. I mean there is coke and pepsi, or Wendys Vs Burger King, Mac Vs PC, cell phone services, car insurance commercials, satellite and cable, g'damn toilet papers...
Is just hilarious that videogame blog/message boards try to act the sense of high morales when it comes to this, when its what feeds it.
Your wish is my command.
@c45h: If I could have bought *your* PS3, I would never have bought a 360. But since Sony literally couldn't kill off BWC fast enough (and long before a model hit $400), I decided to expand my gaming horizons and try all those Xbox 1 franchises that I shunned on the cheap and save a few hundred bucks. Sucks that happened to you though.
i don't even care anymore about what sony or microsoft say but i notice nintendo has not counted their blessings and they have the only right to. i think they know they may be #1 now but eventually will fall out over the long time. sony had their turn at #1 for 2 generations, until microsoft can even be #1 (and not just in america) they need to make a good console and actually win the generation war. 2nd place isn't a win. neither is 3rd or 4th.
Alright. You make a good argument and i'll concede to that. However, take the Mac vs PC thing. From a personal perspective of those around me, I can't say those adverts did anything but make people hate macs more unreasonably than they did already.
I think gaming companies making comments like this only harm the company that they come from. Look at the comments here for fine example. Sure. Most, if not all, of the people making comments already have a 360. But what about those that do not? Can you possibly find a way that a comment like that is viewed upon positively for the buyers? Maybe the reason why video game blog/message boards get up in a heat about it because it's about their loved area.
Please. Go to a large Windows Discussion Board and try to look at what happened around the "I'm a mac" commercials. You see the same thing. It's not just gaming. It's just that of course you're going to see that argument by fans of video games on a video game blog. Makes sense, no?
@hitnrun:
Ah I see I see! Been a couple months. Well i'm sure that we're bound to see a new entry soon.
Why can't these companies think of us? :(
Should probably add FF13 to the list.
Fact.
funny list but why is GTA4 on there? isn't that a multiplatform game? As as already stated, the system probably won't need saving as it has on the way, god of war 3, ICO 3, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, GT 5, Infamous, and white knight chronicles! and I cannot put down demon's souls for the life of me! I do own a 360, however, there really aren't that many promising games announced yet for this year (mass effect 2 is probably the only one I've seen). I did buy re5 for 360, and I will buy ff13 for ps3.
