Despite the fact that industry analyst such as Michael Pachter doubted Red Dead Redemption would make much of a splash the game has been almost universally praised by critics (our review is coming, I swear), been the talk of much of the gaming community, and possibly sold like gang busters. How well has it possibly sold? It is looking to take the prize for the biggest UK launch of 2010, beating out Final Fantasy XIII and other major releases.
This is according to UK retailer HMV. They informed CVG that since the game's launch on Friday the game is expected to sell fantastically, moving an estimated 300,000 units in its two days on the market. "Red Dead Redemption is comfortably shaping up to be the biggest and fastest-selling title of 2010 so far -- ahead of the likes of Final Fantasy, Battlefield and even Heavy Rain, which we had as a major exclusive," HMV games commercial manager Jonathan Hayes said.
Pretty impressive for a game that I personally feel didn't seem to have as much hype behind it as most of the other big releases of the year.

Red Dead Redemption is pretty good, not as much as everyone is saying but still very enjoyable.

Brits, the "wild" west of American history wasn't really as violent as [Italian-produced] spaghetti Westerns and video games about the west portray.
OK Corral, the most violent of any scuffle, led to like... 3 deaths? Most towns saw 1-3 deaths/year, which is amazingly still WAY less per capita than you find in Detroit or DC nowadays.
tl;dr, modern media rewriting history sux
I agree, but that doesn't make for an entertaining game or movie. Its not much fun watching people churn butter and die at the ripe age of 35 from cholera or some other disease.
Is any one else concerned that in 12 months time we're going to see second and third tier studios pouring out copy-cat Westerns?
I think there's only been around a dozen or so Western games to date, so maybe its an idea whose time has finally caught up with the necessary tech to imagine in, but we've all seen how this industry has worked in the past. Regardless, I'm glad that by all indications this game is going to sell like mad. I know I'm having a good time with it.

Since Luxembourg gets it's supplies from Belgium and the Netherlands, that could mean that there are shortages in those countries too!
I didn't know that the hype for RDR was THAT big!
And as shockingly enough, as much as I hated GTAIV, I fucking LOVE Red Dead Redemption.
Most blockbuster stores get what they are given and have no choice in how many. Its Head office who are morons, plus a PS3 shortage didn't help. Also if you would Preorder it would be cheaper and guarentee both your and Blockbusters sale.
I preordered the special edition as it was a fiver cheaper than even play.com and I got staff discount so it came to like 38 quid.
It sold out everywhere friday and so im not surprised its doing well. That and its fucking incredible. My early rentals made the near perfect euthoria all the more sweeter. I SKINNED A HORSE IN 5 MINS OF PLAYING! GOTY for sure.
"Red Dead Redemption is pretty good, not as much as everyone is saying but still very enjoyable."
It's precisely as good as everyone is saying.
"is this game worth getting on the PS3? I heard the graphics didn't transfer well at all. Why can't they just make games for the PS3's engine? Fucking disappointing."
I'm about done with my first play through of this game on the PS3 and I have no idea what you're talking about.
I mean, there are a couple of niggles here and there.. like it's only in 720p and there's a weird lighting effect when you look up at the stars and then look down at the ground real fast. But it's so minor, who cares?
Ya heard wrong. It looks fine on the PS3.
Your question "is this game worth getting on the PS3?" would be answered with a "yes". The Xbox doesn't even need to be brought into that conversation.
Have you even played it? As another person who hated the departure from the Xbox/PS2 games to the next gen GTA series, I'm still enjoying the hell out of RDR.
I don't know man, I am yet to finish it (it only came out on Friday here in the UK and Saturday was the Champions League Final so I've not played as much as I would like to) but like with GTA IV I'm still pretty bored by a lot of the missions - too simple and too easy. What has been improved immensely is the gunplay (could have done without the bullet time nonsense though) and the unique setting certainly helps to make the whole experience more interesting.
It's currently sitting with a 95 on Metacritic making it the third and fifth highest rated game on the PS3 and 360 respectively. I like it but it is not that good. It just seems like everyone is getting carried away -in the same way we did with GTA IV et al.- only for us to realise a couple months down the line that we got lost in the hyperbole.
Fuck though I could be wrong (indeed, I hope I am) and this could very well be that good.
The LOST finale was incredible. I don't know what you were watching.
And who could possibly say no to mercilessly wiping out cougars and bears for profit? It's like the American dream in video game form.

"couple of niggles"
"niggles"
Yeeeeeeeeeeeah.
@comradetrotskii-----Speak for yourself man. GTA IV and it's two episodes are great games. Rockstar games tend to be rough in terms of glitches or sometimes shoddy controls but everything else is so good those problems don't matter. No one can touch them in the dialogue department.
Red Dead Redemption deserves all the hype and sales it gets. It's oozing with atmosphere and is my current goty.
Pachter needs to do research before he pulls a guess out of his ass.
After the technically outstanding but somewhat boring GTAIV, I've held off jumping in with RDR. Rockstar are a big name and I think RDR has largely sold itself on the back of GTA's hype machine. It was always going to get high scores, but I find it odd how some reviewers (at some sites etc) never received copies, so that they could judge the game properly. Hmmm, strange.
I'm going to wait a while until RDR drops a bit, for if it is actually fun, t deserves my attention. I'll be jumping into BC2 Onslaught soon. Alpha Protocol is also a possibility.
Oh, and the Lost finale was cool (now I can look forward to that huge dvd boxset). Great stuff, now we can all get ready for The Walking Dead in October (possibly the next big tv show).
That ruined any sense of danger for me.
I actually think it looks BETTER on the PS3, less thick jaggy outlines and more warm atmospheric blending between objects and background. Looks way more real and way less cartoony.
I've seen very few bugs, my triangle prompts stopped coming up, needed to load my last save, (had just killed 4 bears and couldn't skin them!) but the sheer fun of it makes those excusable.
I'm a huge fan of the MP system, just last night I holed up in that first town you visit in mexico, shot a fucktonne of civilians and lawman, became a public enemy and a posse of 3 guys came to collect my bounty.
Safe to say I slaughtered them over and over for a while, put my headset on a taunted them some, got chatting, possed up and went to take a gang hideout together.
I just love how FREE it is, I mean you literally do whatever you want in the MP, wanna go hunting? wanna go kill other players? Wanna kill AI enemies? Wanna cause trouble and get wanted? Wanna hunt down wanted players? just do it. Here's a great world to play in, go out and have fun!
It's. Just. Brilliant.
I think it's really set the bar for future Sandbox games multiplayer set up.
@Jasper Byrne - Sure, it's not a HARD game, but it is a FUN game. If I want something difficult I'll play some Mega Man or some Demon's Souls (although DS isn't typically "hard" but is certainly tense)
I'm kinda worried about finishing it too soon, I've been to Mexico, come back to Blackwater and I'm just playing in and around Blackwater now, hunting, Bounties, helping people and that. Anyone know how much % complete the story is?
Like how in previous GTA games you could finish the story and be like 60% complete?
