Ratchet and Clank might be Insomniac's last 60 FPS game photo

There’s a chance Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time could be Insomniac Games’ last game that runs at 60 FPS.

In a recent column written by Insomniac’s Mike Acton, the developer lays out why he believes his studio no longer needs to create games that run at 60 FPS. To be brief, the reasoning boils down to two factors: framerate doesn’t affect sales and doesn’t seem to affect review scores.

The Insomniac community team polled a gaggle of consumers about FPS, asking how much frame rate matters to them. According to Acton, a whopping 16 percent said they wouldn’t buy a game that wasn’t running at 60 FPS. The majority said it didn’t matter as long as the framerate didn’t interfere with the game.

This brings up another point -- Acton says Insomniac will continue to make games with stable framerates. It’s just that given framerate might be 30 FPS slower, which seems just fine by us. Like his data shows in regards to critics as a whole, the majority of us at Destructoid could care less about how fast the framerate is. We're more concerned with how awesome (or not awesome) a given game is at the end of the day.

Just keep making great games like A Crack in Time and I'll be happy to fork over my wallet.

smooth and stable 30 is fine, isn't that what uncharted too is?

60fps is so much nicer than 30, but a poor game at 60fps is just a smooth, poor game. A good game at 30? A slightly less smooth but certainly playable, good game.

I find 10 FPS bareable so I guess I'm not one to be asked.

If it runs fine, I don't care. If making a game run at 60 FPS is a lot more difficult than 30, then it makes sense that they'd look to see if it's worth the effort they're putting in.

The Human eye generally can't really detect a difference after 25-30fps anyways so as long as the quality of game is good then I'm completely fine with this.

R&C looks amazing as is, but I can't say that running at 60fps is that big a deal... some games you can tell need a higher FPS, but R&C doesn't really have any gameplay that needs it.

An even better R&C running at 30 sits well with me :)

60 FPS does make a difference. When you're playing Forza or Modern Warfare, the smooth frame rate really stands out and makes the whole experience better.

That said, I can live with 30 FPS as long as it's rock solid. When a game has an inconsistent frame rate, that's when it really starts to hurt the actual gameplay.

Gah....It's rather pathetic that the 360 and PS3 are so horribly underpowered when it comes to RAM, otherwise this would never even be an issue.

@Mark Oleski: That is actually a common misconception. The human eye can see and recognize the difference in speeds of over 70 FPS.

I'd bet 90% of gamers (ie, the ones who don't read blogs like this) wouldn't even know what frame rate is. in fact if you asked them if they care about FPS they'de probably respond "Fuck yeah! It's all about COD/Halo/killzone i love me some shooters"

Weird thing to even worry about Insomniac.

To be honest, I sorta like 30 FPS in some games. MGS3 was running at 30, and that just made it look more cinematic. It would be interesting to see R&C at 30. Some games (Modern Warfare comes to mind) would get screwed by it, but it really comes down to a game-by-game basis.

Anybody can tell the difference between 30FPS and 60FPS. I don't know where you got that idea.

I prefer 60fps, But this is coming from someone who primarily plays on PC's, it's noticeable and it bugs me a little bit when console developers don't aim for 60fps, but it's nothing massively game-breaking unless it, like someone mentioned above, causes actual slowdown.

Depends on what type of game it is. An FPS with an inconsistent framerate is horrible. Now, on PC you really don't get this issue, which is where I play most of the time, and moving from the same game on PC then to console you can see the difference in framerate. They really need to pump out a new system already, something with more than 512MB of RAM and some discrete GPU memory instead of just system memory. The only games I usually play on my console are arcadey flight games (Ace Combat and the likes), fighting and racing games. I don't associate framerate as importantly with those genres, but for shooters it's super important to me, which is why I choose to play on PC instead.

I am VERY glad infinity ward thinks otherwise. 60fps looks AWESOME. If you display the two simultaneously, you'll understand.

There are some tv sets which simulate the effect by calculating intermediary frames, altough with motion artefacts, processing lag, and partial 30/60fps on different areas.

Count me in as one of the 16% that prefers (something closer to) 60 fps. For me it makes a HUGE difference. I realize most people will stutter through 15 fps without blinking. However, if I had to choose between a silky framerate and a good game, I'll pick "good game", of course. But it's a shame I should have to...

Apparently it's too difficult (or too expensive, or too time-consuming) to program a smooth frame rate into this "brave next generation" of video games. And most people don't care. Lame.

I love a game that runs 60fps... but it's not a necessity. Being a PC gamer, I've always just expected console games to run at 30fps and PC games to run at 60 (unless my computer is gimped).

I think sales have more to do with the content and mass appeal of the game than the number of frames you see per second, but I dunno... that might just be my common sense speaking.

It'll be REALLY weird to play a Ratchet game at < 60 fps. I think that they should just keep pushing the graphical bar; this sounds like they want an excuse to not have the game be so smooth anymore so maybe they can toss in a few bells and whistles extra.

When MGS3 was 30 FPS after MGS2 and Twin Snakes were 60 it was really fucking jarring to me.

I, for one, would ask other developers to please stop devoting so much budget to graphics. It is and will continue to cause the profitability of most hardcore games to crater. We've already seen game lengths decrease because of it.

A crappy game at 60 fps is still crappy, and a great game at 30 fps is only kinda crappy, but a great game at 60 fps is amazing. That kind of frame rate really brings the characters to life. No, it won't stop me from buying an otherwise great game, but way to lower your standards, Insomniac.

As everything in a game, what matters is the game in general, at 16, 30 or 60 fps. We want good games no greater resolution or framerate.

ACIT is actually a short game. The put so much on the disc that they have to cut somewhere. My guess is freeing up the frame rate will allow them to put more game on the disc. Yes ACIT is buttery smooth, but the levels don't feel as complete and Tools of Destruction. The weapons pretty much suck compared to ToD as well.
ACIT felt small when I played it and ToD felt much bigger.
Frame rates don't matter as long as they don't interfere with the game.

As a PC gamer I control my FPS, and 60fps is almost essential. The smooth turning and aiming you get in 60fps just cannot be felt at all at 30fps.

Stupid reviewers. Every game that achives 60+ Hz is a technical feat.

I'd like to aks Insomniac to continue to make games with great gameplay, great graphics and in 60Hz.

Please.

I know it's a business and this is but one very small part of the overall structure in gamemaking, but I still like to live in my fantasy that it wasn't all about workmanlike assembly lines to getting paid in the game industry, but there was still art and a pride in the quality of what was being made not just for the bottom line, but for the artist simply wanting to create the best they could even if only for themselves.

Told you, it's my fantasy world.

But they basically said they're going to do less because it doesn't equal more money. Yeah, that's just great.
Again, it's not about the frames per second themselves, it's the whole overlying attitude of doing something purely for the money. That's fine if you work on Wall Street. But I think of games, well done ones, as art.

What I'd really like to know is who died over at Insomniac? Because they're getting all emotional and pouty like they're going through grief. First with how sad they are about people who didn't love Resistance 2, now they want to cut things they feel people don't openly pat them on the back about.
It's like they're bi-polar. One game sounds like they took a little too personal, the next like it's an assembly line.

Insomniac needs a nap.

I can accept games running at 30fps AS LONG AS THERE'S NO SLOWDOWNS!!!

But a sharp looking game with a great art-style running at 60fps > a blurry looking game with high-polygon characters and high-resolution textures running at 30fps anyday.

I don't know? Did they actually ask people that KNOW what you're talking about, or just some random mothers standing around GameStop? "R&C:A Crack In Time" had no slow downs at all, I'd hate to see that change because they didn't ask people who knows what 60FPS means. And yes, the weapons in this new game are shit. What were they thinking?
