Ratchet and Clank backed by Sony to the tune of one meeeeellion dollars photo

There's no denying that Sony could really do with a hit in the near future, and there are few better franchises to tackle the Xbox 360 and Wii this Christmas than Ratchet & Clank. Recognizing this, Sony is reported to be pumping $1million into the promotion of Insomniac's platform shooter.

The huge bags with dollar signs printed on them have won Sony prime time Saturday night TV spots, ensuring that knowledge of the game will reach the masses. As the holiday season draws near, it's clear what horse Sony is going to back, and it's a very good choice. Not only is Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction bright and colorful enough to appeal to kids, the humor, gorgeous visuals and solid gameplay is something that adults can get behind as well.

The ad campaign will last for a month beginning November 16th. It will accompany a big online campaign featuring coverage on some of the biggest Web sites, both specialist and mainstream. Sony states it is looking at the game as a "benchmark" PS3 title.

Will Ratchet & Clank prove to be the secret weapon that Sony has long needed, or is the faltering company throwing good money after bad? Future: Tools of Destruction has the potential to be the biggest PS3 title to date, but it doesn't have much competition. Exactly how big the new Ratchet & Clank will be remains to be seen. Do you think the push will pay off?

Sony making smart marketing decisions? I don't believe it.

This is the closest thing the PS3 has to a system seller for me, but then, I've already known about it for awhile. I'm sure the marketing will pay off though for the casual consumer (or the hardcore gamer's clueless parents), especially with their new SKU nearly matching the price of the 360.

That is the word dominating killer app that sony needs to take over our souls.

Previos to the price cut, I don't really think any one game could be a significant system seller. Now that PS3's are more reasonably priced, Possibly. All the R&C's were alot of fun, but Metal Gear or The next Final Fantasy will be vastly more significant in the "system selling" column. The price point is the most important variable. G.R.A.W. was a 360 seller for me. I saw it over at my buddies house and bought the pair the next day. Would I have bought one if it was a hundred dollars more expensive? eventually. But I wouldn't have been as happy as I actually was walking out of the store that day.

If I had a PS3, I might've gotten this because it looks sweet. Also looks a bit on the easy side though? I'm wondering what feeling you'll end up with if you can finish it in a day and want to play something else afterwards.

Since there's no DW6 yet!

Pew: Ratchet and Clank games have never really been easy. Maybe the demo was, but it was a) a demo and b) the first level.

Even if you managed to finish it in a day (less than 24 hours) you'd be far from owning all the weapons and having them upgraded, getting all the skill points, or finding all the secrets.

I do a pretty sweet Dr. Evil impression, but sadly I can't do it over the interlulz. Otherwise I'd bust it out right now.

This is so wrong. 1 million dollars into an ad campaign.

why not 1 million dollars into *ahem* GAME DEVELOPMENT ???

Sony should be THROWING money at devs like they are dirty strippers. R&C looks fantastic and yes it deserves 1 million into promotion. But why not more money into game development? Why not 1 million in free dev kits? 1 million into Dev support? How about sony use 1 million dollars to have a proper STL lib written??

I may be crazy here, but I'd like to play games on a PS3.

No, sony has been behind in advertising for the ps3, It is one of the contributors to the negative-ness around the PS3.

They are putting money into development, just look at the acuisitions they have made recently. (as in the last year)

I don't know, I just don't see this game as a killer app for the PS3. It's certainly not something on the level of Halo or Zelda.

Played the demo, it looks incredible in 1080i. I had my reservations about it at first, but after playing it and seeing the awesome visuals it has I've changed my mind. Will this be a console mover for Sony, possibly. If you like these types of games it will definatly be a must have. Also, if you've got youngins and are looking for an opportunity to enjoy a game with them on a PS3 this will definatly be one of those.

Most of the commenters here have been following Sony's demise for a while, and nothing short of them giving us free top shelf prostitutes will make us call any PS3 game a system "saver." I know I'll eventually pick the game up, but with call of duty 4 and assassins creed coming out, both of which I'm looking forward to more, it'll have to wait.

I've never really been into R & C but I did enjoy resistance so maybe I'll like this? Who knows I've known about the game for a while now and I'm not really interested still.

A million bucks into ads is not that much. I think a good number of movies spend as much money on advertising as they do making the movie.

Ratchet and Clank games were definitely my most played PS2 games, and the new one is the biggest reason I'm sad I got a 360 instead of a PS3 -- especially considering that Gears, which was my 360 'killer app', is about ten hours long. Yeeha.

I would pick this game up the day it comes out, but I’ve committed too much money to other titles this season — that is, I made the [perhaps unwise] decision to buy both Guitar Hero III and Rock Band. That comes close to $300 when you include tax, and I’m also really intrigued by Assassin’s Creed. Between those three games and Warhawk, which I’m playing nonstop at the moment, I don’t know if I’ll be able to afford (money-wise or time-wise) any more games this holiday season.

This game could sell me the PS3. This and Drake's should sell me the PS3. But this, Drake's, and another $100 price drop for the un-gimped 80Gb version WILL sell me the system.

The other 4 ratchet and clank games are defiantly my favorite, and Future is a system seller for me, i had always planned to get a ps3, but tell a significant price cut, now, i'm starting to think about only eating cold cuts tell it comes out to save up...

With the Sony card people get some insanely cheap PS3s off sonystyle.com. My friend got his for 400 or something, which slightly upset me due to the fact that I got it a few days earlier from amazon just after the first 60gb price cut. I just checked and there is a decient deal now (to the person who wanted a $400 80 gb. It's $499 with $100 credit and a years free financing.) Sorry about the whole sales pitch there... not affiated with Sony or whatever. Just filling the guy >_< really.

A) This game is one of the most beautiful PS3 and next-gen games you'll ever see. The animation, variety, and colors are fabulous.

B) This series has always been fantastic.

C) The demo is a VERY small sample of what the full title has to offer. Don't judge it just on that.
