Rare seeking to 'own' all Avatar properties, including their soul photo

In a shocking show of corporate greed and defilement, Rare’s studio manager Mark Betteridge has made it clear to gamesindustry.biz that his studio will seek to “own” the entirety of the Avatar product market and will continue to use the cutesy creations in the future. Betteridge prefaced his Avatar-owning statement by admitting that third parties want in on the market space, but Rare will attempt to control it all.

From the interview:

There's a lot of interest in avatars by third parties, as you can imagine. As standalone avatar products, we want to own that space, because we think it's a huge, huge space going forward - it appeals across genres, across age ranges, demographics, and there's an enormous opportunity there.
There you have it folks, the small developer who created the critically acclaimed FPS Perfect Dark Zero now seeks to control one of the most pivotal markets on Xbox Live. In addition to wanting it all right now, Betteridge made clear that Avatars are just in their infancy and described last week’s release as just a “foot in the door.”

More like a foot in my pocketbook, Rare.

It would be great if you could put the avatars in a PerfectDark game so I could shoot those fuckers.

So wait...are they saying it's popular with third parties and they want to stop that?...erm...?

Thanks Rare so I can expect Avatar: Bolts and Nuts in the next year?

I'm pretty sure they're using the word "own" as "be the best in" and not in the legal or copyright sense...

How dare a company stake a claim to something they've created.

...or stole from Nintendo.

Critically acclaimed? By who? The first one decent, but...

Well, I just hope I get to give my avatar a lancer or a cog tag accessory. Maybe even a Master chief or Ninja Gaiden mask/helmet plz?

As long as they do something good I don't care who controls it.

I think it's very unlikely that Rare have any ownership rights whatsoever over avatars - Microsoft will already own it all.

He probably just means competatively.

I'm not so sure Avatars could be a big money fountain, what's so interesting in Avatars anyway. The fun part of Nintendo's Miis is the posibility to create figures or people in a cartoon way (the Check Mii Out channel sure is a great option to be creative with Miis).

Microsoft/Rare didn't give gamers that freedom to use a nose in the forehead or eyes in the chin to use them in a different way.

Well, considering that their games haven't been that good AT ALL (minus Viva Pinata, haven't played the sequel), Rare has to make money somewhere since their games aren't selling well (minus Kameo and PDZ, they sold well for launch titles, considering there wasn't much at launch anyhow).
