Rare not sure why Donkey Kong 64 isn't on Virtual Console photo

Why hasn’t Donkey Kong 64 crept onto Nintendo’s Virtual Console? Most of us aren’t wrenching our bed sheets late at night in haunting thought, but at least one Rare fan is curious as to why the modern classic hasn’t cropped up on the digital distribution service. When asked by this fan in a recent Scribes mailbag, the developer responded simply: they haven’t the slightest idea.

“I have no idea why DK64 hasn't shown up yet, and whether Jetpac would still be in there or they'd replace it with Mario's Cement Factory (which ate about three years of my life as a child) or something,” the representative said. “Or maybe a single-screen 2D shooty version of Jet Race would be more appropriate. Who knows? Not us, obviously, or we wouldn't be sitting here pitching clueless alternatives.”

As Kotaku notes, this may or may not have something to do with Microsoft’s ownership of Rare. On a similar note, if true, this is like the reverse of the situation Rare experienced with the oft rumored re-release of Golden Eye 007. There were too many hands in the pot to make that happen, we believe.

Rare - Let me help you understand why it's not on the Virtual Console...

...because it sucked...

...you're welcome.

There's like...five N64 games on virtual console.

Hyperbole aside, there are a LOT of great N64 games that should be on VC (whether or not DK64 is one of them is debatable).

Why would Nintendo funnel their revenue into the pockets of their competition? They wouldn't.

If RARE aren't sure why DK64 (or any of their games) aren't on VC, they are clearly more stupid than we give them credit for.

DK!!!!!

DONKEY KONG!

Nah...I'll just stick with Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2. DK64 was just a worse Banjo Kazooie with multiplayer.

HIS COCONUT GUN CAN FIRE IN SPURTS.
IF HE SHOOTS YA. IT'S GONNA HURT.

...and that's why it's not on VC

"As Kotaku notes, this may or may not have something to do with Microsoft’s ownership of Rare."

That would make sense, if it weren't for the fact that the entire Donkey Kong Country series is on Virtual Console.

I own the special edition Donkey Kong Nintendo 64. Boy, is it ugly.

What's with all the DK hate? I know it wasn't as great as Banjo-Kazooie but it was still an awesome collect-a-thon platformer with a lot of variety (5 playable characters), a fun multiplayer discraction, and awesome secrets for banana fairies (boss mode). One of my personal favorites although I know Banjo-Kazooie is still held in higher regard and rightfully so.

...Am I the only person who loves the Donkey Kong rap? It's so bad it wraps around to "completely awesome". :D

I really liked the game too. Yeah, it's a long, glorified fetch-quest, but it's a damn fun one regardless, and the multiplayer mode was great as well, if I remember correctly. DKC64 was one of the first games I remember playing, and it still holds a special part of my childhood.

There's a special edition? Are you talking about the yellow cartridge version?

Maybe it's not on there...because the game is crap?

Anyway, Microsoft owning Rare has absolutely nothing to do with this. Nintendo has all rights to anything Donkey Kong related. The only thing that could be a bit iffy is the inclusion of Rare's Jetpac game as a necessary side-mission, and even then, they could easily replace that with another game, I'd think.

Am I the only person on the planet who absolutely fucking loved DK64?
Even as a huge fan the Countries, I still thought it was fucking great.

When you think about it though, there are far worse games out on the Virtual Console. DK64 wouldn't be the worst game on it. And really, I can see it selling well simply because it has Donkey Kong in it. Unless there are some legal issues (or "too many hands in the pot" which, lol it's DK64 come on), there's no reason it shouldn't be there.

I actually like DK64 a lot (rap and all), except for the incredibly frustrating Beaver Bother minigame. Solid gameplay, long length, good graphics for the era, and some great level design. I'd rather see Jet Force Gemini show up on the virtual console first though, which on most days is my favorite game for the N64.

@Chronic Logic

There was a special edition DK console that had DK64 bundled with it. It's a somewhat transparent green: http://ui08.gamespot.com/103/n6401_2.jpg

DK64 didn't suck so much as it was released pretty much in the HUGE GLUT of 3D collect-a-thon platformers, so it got lost in the pack-- and by that time, people were getting sick of them. (I know I was-- I think that, in fact, it was the last collect-a-thon I ever played.)

It brought nothing new to the table.

I'd guess its more of an emulation issue. Its probably too hard to emulate it 100% so they just aren't going to.

There's a shit ton of better N64 not up there. DK anything is the last thing on my mind. Hell Rare anything for that matter.

The only things I would buy are Rare shooters and I'd rather have them on PSN/XBLA.

So... some junior guy at rare doesn't know or isn't allowed to explain the senior level negotiations relating to their previous properties? And this is worthy of posting on 2 blogs why?

I'm sure the reason has nothing to do with Rare blowing up a giant imitation of 8-bit Mario in one of the trailers for BK: Nuts and Bolts.

I surely didn't love DK64 as much as I loved DKC, but it'd be nice to have it again. I hate when re-releases can't be made because of f*cking ownership or legal issues, like Earthbound on VC.
