Rare no more: Digital Devil Saga series coming to PSN photo

Ah, Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga. Produced back in the pre-Persona craze days, when Atlus USA could only afford to do one print run of any given series (a rep they still hold today, though to a much lesser degree)Atlus' PS2-bound Hindu-reference paradise was the one to hold onto, especially the second installment, Digital Devil Saga 2. Prior to a reprint, copies of that game were going for more than $100 on eBay and Amazon. Now that age is over, for Europeans at least.

Ghostlight - the UK-based publisher of most games that Atlus, XSEED and Aksys usually handle in the New World - will be releasing both Digital Devil Saga games on the PlayStation Store "in the near future". Whenever that near future happens, anyone with a European PSN/SEN account and access to appropriate monies will be able to download some digitally-delivered devilry. Note, this is merely a rerelease, and not some HD remake

There's no word as to whether this will happen for North America, though. If it does happen, maybe they should consider rereleasing Devil Summoner next. $90 for a PS2 game?! Pffft!

"Produced back in the pre-Persona days"

More like pre-Persona 3 and 4, since the first one was released in 1996 on the PlayStation. Get your facts straight.

OH GOD! Do not scare me like that. From the title I thought you meant Microsoft was dissolving Rare!

I bought both of the DDS games within the past 2/3 years and they weren't *that* rare or expensive...

I found these used at Gamestop for under 30 bucks each... don't buy inflated Ebay prices.

There were 3 persona games out before DDS.

I still have my copy of Devil Summoner. A friend from GameStop told me to get a few years back, before I started high school, because it would skyrocket in price. Little did he know that by giving me a collector's item, he'd begin my obsession with the SMT series. I hope these titles come to PSN, because I'll play the living fuck outta them.

Are they really that hard to find in the US? You can pick up brand new copies of both games for under £10 in the UK thanks to Ghostlight.

@Xenonas

I think that's what he means. DDS was before the whole Persona craze. After 3 & 4 came out the rest of the SMT series has basically been overshadowed.

DDS isn't really expensive though, but this is great news. Can't wait to see them on PSN, if they come to PSN in the US that is.

Also what we really need is Devil Summoner on PSN. That game is like $90 on Amazon.

On one hand, I'm really excited I'll finally be able to play these games. On the other hand, I fear it will look so ugly on my HDTV I may not be able to overcome the "hideousness" factor.

These are exactly the kinds of games that need to come to digital markets like PSN. Fucking sold. Always wanted to play these.

It's funny because I'm actually finally just getting around to playing my physical copies of the SMT series. If they come to the US PSN (or if I move overseas before that happens) I'll snap them up to support the release but right now I'd rather rock my PS2 than shuffle accounts.

already at the end, guess i'll finish it now just to see the ending(doing the secret boss fights for now)

though i would like to have Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocurne Maniax Edition(the one that comes with the Limited Edition of Devil Summoner 2) with a new 7th ending, and raidou replacing dante.

it's the only SMT i haven't gotten yet(plus it was not released in the US/EU)

also reprint Devil Summoner 1 please!!!!!!

those are rare titles? i picked up both of those games and God Hand for 10$ each in store new.

i would like Atlus to release collection of all their ps2 SMT titles or at least put them on PSN/XBLA - it's cheap to port them over and there are loads of people who would buy them.

Was planning on getting this for my PS2 anyway, I really don't see a reason to pick it up on the PS3 when the upscaler probably won't improve much. Also, dat boxart.

While I'd say bring Devil Summoner 3 to PSN, you all aren't missing that much. It's not terrible, but it's kind of like the original Persona. Interesting but not very well executed. You can tell they hadn't really done an action-RPG before. Devil Summoner 4, on the other hand, is about like if you went from Persona to Persona 2 EP in terms of overhauling stuff and polish. Though if you just wanted to play through it for the story, DS3 is pretty good (finally boss is a giant mech battleship ghost thing that's possessed by a school girl who is possessed by a time-traveling incorporeal future devil summoner oh I just went cross-eyed).

While I finally got physical copies for DDS I&II at least it's good that there's now a digital version of it somewhere. Maybe Atlus will put Persona 2 EP out instead of just wasting time and resources doing a port (not that I care I already own it). Oh yeah, and I never owned a Dreamcast, and digital version of Maken X would be nice.

These games fgot me into Atlus and I hold them dearly. I might download them just so I can play them without removing the discs from the boxes and risk scratching them.

I loved the storyline of these games, but the gameplay was horrendously boring. If you grab them, you'd better like fighting in RPGs, because that's all you'll be doing for 40 hours.

@ xenonas (and others) "Produced back in the pre-Persona CRAZE days". Before the persona obsession. BTW, Digital Devil Saga is AWESOME, but I do not recomend the first one. Watch the cutscenes on youtube then play the second one. If you like good voice acting, this is a tilte MUST HAVE. The voice acting is just perfect.

I'd be excited if Vita had PS2 comparability.

Also, as much as I liked these two games, I could never play the again because the first game ended with an insane encounter rate and DDS2 picked right up where that left off.

There's also that problem where PS2 Classics look like blurry ass at 720p. DDS should not be made ugly.

Sad thing to me isn't that this will be only in Europe (because I hope that'll change) but because it'll only be for the PS3 and not the Vita, until they decide "hey, this can run PS2 games too!"

We have Maniax edition already, you're talking about Maniax Chronicle, and there is no special 7th ending with that one. Raidou has Pierce though, which makes him superior to Dante.

Yes, I know this is an old thread but I had to comment about that.
