Rare co-founders jump ship photo

Wow. This has been happening a lot lately, hasn't it? According to Next Generation, Rare founders Chris and Tim Stamper have officially departed from the Microsoft owned studio after 20 years of dedication for unknown reasons.

Taking over their duties will be Mark Betteridge, a 19-year Rare employee, who was the creative force behind Viva Piñata and Donkey Kong Country. Mark will also be working on the next iteration in the Banjo Kazooie franchise in addition to overseeing all future projects at Rare.

As of now, nothing is known about the Stampers' future plans. According to Microsoft, the departure of Rare's co-founders “will not impact the development teams at Rare.”

Ishaan you, Nex, and Sheir, are all on the ball today. There's already 3 new blogs up by 9am, wowza. You'd have to look pretty hard to find a gaming site that blogs that early/late. Keep up the good work, hopefully Niero regonizes talent. Hope in the future that robot head of his doesnt swell up. Just tell him to respect your authori-tah.

you sure Mark Betteridge is only 19 years old, if he did Donkey Kong Country he would have been what age when he did that game... around 7 years?

On the ball with post frequency, perhaps, but this news is a week old. It even says so on the next-gen site!

@ Cruds

I'm not sure if you're being serious or trying to be funny...

And 19-year means he's been there 19 years.

Yeah I read the news a few days ago but until it's posted on Dtoid I choose to ignore/dismiss it. But seriously, what has happened to Rare? I know Viva Pinata is supposed to be good but it's been years since they've done anything that really shook up the industry like they did when working for Nintendo.

I think they got stuck in the MS grinder. I'm not saying that is MS's fault, but, well, that's what it looks like.

Being owned by any company means that you begin to do what they want you to do.

You think Ensemble just wants to make RTSs?

Anyways, if you just sold your company for millions upon millions, why not leave and try and start another one that you might be able to sell again?

What would be crazy is if they went back and made games for nintendo again. Kinda negate part of the purchase MS made.

Meh. Some site posted the history of Rare last week when this news actually broke, and if you look at what they've released over the years you'd realize Rare has always been a hit and miss company, with more misses than hits... But the hits being huge. They have always been over hyped, and Microsoft leapt before they looked and bought a very over-rated company.
