Rainbow Six: Patriots announced for PS3, Xbox 360, PC photo

No, Ubisoft did not decide to randomly abandon the Rainbow Six series. Rather, the company has announced the newest entry, Rainbow Six: Patriots, and hinted at a new direction for this first-person shooter due out sometime in 2013.

The press release makes it sound rather ridiculous, so it should be quite a lot of fun seeing how these promises are kept. With an "unprecedented level of humanity," Patriots will center around the revolutionary group True Patriots which seeks to reclaim the U.S. from corrupt politics and corporate special interests.

More details are coming in the December issue of Game Informer.

TERRORISM HITS HOME IN TOM CLANCY’S RAINBOW 6® PATRIOTS VIDEO GAME FROM UBISOFT®

SAN FRANCISCO – November 3, 2011 – Today, Ubisoft announced the development of the latest edition of its best-selling Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 franchise, Rainbow 6 Patriots. Developed by Ubisoft Montreal with the support of Ubisoft Toronto and Red Storm, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots revolves around a dynamic single-player storyline that captures the reality of modern-day terrorism and allows players to experience it from multiple characters’ perspectives. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots is due for release on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Windows PC in 2013.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 franchise has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide and has been hailed as one of the best first-person shooter series of all time.  The games are known for depicting high-tech counter-terrorist operations set within the Tom Clancy’s game world.  With Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots, Ubisoft is building upon the success of the franchise while also taking it in a bold new direction.

“Terrorism has evolved, and so has Rainbow 6. In Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots, all the team play, tactics, and realism that fans of the series love have been coupled with an exciting new narrative direction,” said David Sears, creative director at Ubisoft. “This adds an unprecedented level of humanity that will make Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots an extremely tense and immersive experience.”

In Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots, Team Rainbow faces a new and very real threat called the “True Patriots,” a highly-trained, well-organized revolutionary group that claim the American government is irrevocably corrupted by greedy politicians and corporate special interests.  The True Patriots will do whatever it takes to reclaim their country.  Playing as Team Rainbow, players will face critical scenarios that will require them to make tough ethical decisions in order to stop this new breed of terrorists.

In addition to the immersive single-player storyline, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots will introduce a huge variety of new innovative co-op and multi-player experiences. Players will be rewarded for working as a team and mastering the game’s new features that enhance communication and tactical execution between teammates. Success will come from a mix of split-second decision making and working to coordinate attacks against the enemy.

Additional details on Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots can be found in an exclusive cover story in the December 2011 issue of Game Informer Magazine, available this month.

Finally! The return of the greatest shooter franchise. Battlefield, CoD, Halo, Killzone, Gears, and etc, none have ever had this perfect mix of team based combat, realism, and Fun game types. I am so happy right now cuz Vegas 2's online players have been slacking especially with Battlefield out now cuz so many people who play Rainbow are realism junkies.

To this day, the only R6 game I've played is the first. Which is weird, because I LOVED the first.

Anyway, cool news!

At first I was excited to hear this, because this sounds awesome. Then I realized that it's a Rainbow Six game, a franchise that I can't never get into due to my impatience. Oh well, at least it's nice to hear it still exists.

"has been hailed as one of the best first-person shooter series of all time"

Before R6 Lockdown that is and before that steaming pile of shit called Vegas.

"all the team play, tactics, and realism that fans of the series love have been coupled with an exciting new narrative direction"

After seeing Vegas 1 I highly doubt that.

"a highly-trained, well-organized bla bla bla"

Already bored.

"new innovative co-op and multi-player experiences"

Ya right.

I can't believe Ubisoft is still dragging that franchise in the mud, they're over beating a dead horse. It will probably come with that filthy DRM that require a permanent internet connection anyway.

Regardless of whether it meets all it's claims, I love the Rainbow Six series. Nothing has topped Raven Shield, but no game was as bad as Lockdown, either. I even really liked Vegas. So I'm looking forward to this.

I find it funny that they are making a game about fighting "corporate special interests" and the people publishing is Ubisoft.

I've never been able to really get into Rainbow Six, I just want my Ghost Recon. Which I'm convinced is never coming out.

I watched the gameplay test trailer earlier and the "True Patriots," who sound pretty badass to me, were portrayed as crazy homicidal maniacs about to gut a dude's wife and baby because he "enjoyed foreclosing one people's homes"... What the fuck? Did Glenn Beck right this? If that makes it into the final product, I don't think I'll be able to take it seriously.

Completely agreed, what is this, the Tea Party? I think this article says it best:

@autoimmune & Nephilym

I think the number of comments on this thread that point to this plot being either Rainbow Six: Occupy Wall Street or Rainbow Six: Tea Party goes to show 2 things:

1) The plot framework is generic enough to allow one's own bias to color the narrative one way or the other

and

2)That there really isn't THAT much difference between the 2 groups

Incidentally my first thought was that the plot indicated that we would be shooting crazed "occupy wall street" people due to the "corporate special interests" thing.

My second thought was that the plot sounded stupid.

I still play Rainbow Six Vegas 2 because it's one of the best shooters created, super excited for Patriots. It will be a nice step away from all the "watered down" shooters we've been force fed over the past few years.

@Leviathan

"My second thought was that the plot sounded stupid."

That's what I was getting at. It sounded like some silly right wing attempt to make people willing to stand up against corporate greed look like crazy terrorist. Which sounds really stupid.

I never linked it with OWS, though, because the developer explained beforehand that the trailer was made over a year ago.

As far as Tea Party and OWS similarities go, one is fighting for corporate interest (whether they know it or not) while the others are fighting against corporate interest. One blames the government for being too controlling in general and the other blames the government for not exerting the right amount of control over corporations. One says "cut taxes" while the other says "tax the rich." I think there are some pretty clear differences.

I enjoyed the Vegas games quite a bit and I'm looking forward to this. Hopefully Terrorist Hunt will make a return in this game, so many hours were lost fighting the terrorists on Realistic difficulty.

This plot sounds pretty similar to that of Splinter Cell: Double Agent, albeit with you being a counter-terrorist operative instead of an inside-man working to subvert the group internally.
