Rage Xbox 360 may have multiplayer on separate disc photo

You know those jokes everybody made about Xbox 360 games needing to ship on multiple discs because Blu-ray is ten billion times better than DVDs? Well, it looks like id might finally be the one to make those jokes come true, with talk of Rage needing a second disc on the 360, a disc which may house the entire multiplayer component.

"We'll probably have two DVDs for sure, and then the question is, will multiplayer be on a separate disc or not?" muses id software boss Todd Hollenshead. "It makes no sense for a player to swap that disc in multiplayer, right? That's fail. They have to keep one disc in during multiplayer, can you just put all the multiplayer content on one DVD?"

If that's what needs to be done, that's what needs to be done. However, the fanboy flame wars are going to be hilarious if this truly comes to pass. Still, let's bypass that nonsense as I ask the sane people of the Destructoid community: Would needing a second disc for multiplayer bother you, and would it make you think twice about what platform you buy Rage for?

No, not as long as the game is otherwise the same on both consoles.

Who care show many disks it's on. I know how hard it is for most of us to walk the 10-15 feet up to our TVs and change a disk. As was recently said on RetroforceGO, when FF7 came out we all thought it was awesome it was on four disks, now we piss and moan if there is a disk change involved.

Hey they didn't cut content and put up with the production costs themselves right?

If that's the case I don't care how many disks they use.

anyway, probably i wouldn't start the multiplayer untill i had finished the history mode, so i wouldn't care

Most people will finish the single player and then never touch it again so I don't see an issue. Hell, I can see scenarios now where if you can start from the multiplayer disc, people will quite happily try and sell the single player portion.

Meh.

Doesn't seem like a big deal. It's just a disc change I don't think it's a big deal.

A second disc for multiplayer is an Idea which is neither good nor bad. It means that the compression can be less. If/when sony fanboys complain it should fall on deaf ears. Forza 3 comes on 2 discs one of which I believe is an install only disc, these fanboys may rip into this, but with current bluray technology for games it seems necessary to install to get the best of it. Multiple discs has occured for years and will continue to, I wouldn't be surpised if there were a PS3 game which came on 2 discs in the near future. I feel strongly enough that their arguments are void to write a blog on it.

I think the only people who make a big deal about disc swapping are trolling Sony fanboys. It never was that big of a deal in the past generations and it's not suddenly become this wild inconvenience just because blueray entered the market. Hell, I think mandatory installs where you have to sit there for 15 minutes when you just want to jump in to your newly unwrapped game are way more annoying than quickly swapping a disc 15 hours in, but even that isn't worth raising hell about either.

For Rage 360, I think it would be nice if first you could install the whole game to the hard disk. Then, to play through the single player mode, it would require disc 1 to be in the drive, but to play multiplayer, you could launch with either disc 1 OR disc 2. This way, you could install it at a buddies and let them borrow the other disc. They couldn't play the campaign, but you could have at least 1 friend online with you, and it would help elevate the games online community as a whole, and perhaps encourage more sales.

This scenario is not likely to happen though :(

Normally I either focus on the campaign mode or multiplayer, so I wouldn't really require swapping discs.

The only thing that is funny is that fanboys on both sides pulled size data from all the games from last gen and early this gen to show that Bluray's capacity would be a waste/or needed this generation.

I think all this shows is that Sony is justified in wanting a Bluray in every PS3 for gaming, not just it's HD movie playing capability.

I would rather swap disks than have to install anything. Which leads me to the question: Why doesn't Id put the multiplayer component on a seperate disk that you could install onto your hard drive and never have to disk swap again. Then people who don't play multiplayer wouldn't have to do anything.

This is, at least to me, a situation where complaining just seems to be plain stupid, for most people buying this for the multiplayer are most likely not going to go through the campaign a large multitude of times, so if you frequently play multiplayer, ONLY THE MULTIPLAYER DISK NEEDS TO STAY IN IT. Even if you do switch between them frequently during episodes fueled by the prowess and subtlety of a rage quitter, sparing the 30 seconds it takes to replace the disk with either one isn't really all that much of a hassle.
Yeah, it's kind of a bummer for 360 owners since it's just a bit more baggage to handle and keep track of, but it's not really any different than what you would normally go through if you wanted to swap between games. On the other hand if ID is actually having difficulty fitting the campaign and the multiplayer on a single disk, maybe it means that either the multiplayer is vast, or the campaign is somewhat large. Maybe both, so it's kind of a win-win for those wanting more content.

I think it would be inconvient but if I were really excited as I'm sure many are I probably would be able to see past it. I know nothing about the multiplayer but I'm assuming if it's that big of a component it's probably seperate disc worthy.

However they could just package a redeem code and people could download the multiplayer on the hard drive. Just sayin'.

15 min installs don't put devs outta business, its not fanboys who are yelling it (well they are but I ignore their existence regardless) its people that are paying attention to what's happening to devs.multi disks in anything raise production costs, its fine if devs choose to do it, but when they have to do it just to keep up a bit of an issue arises. Devs want multi plats to be even across the board so either they cut content, use more money for production, or make it DLC(aka the sh*t that should have came with the game DLC).

But now devs are doing just to fit everything in, this will ultimatly lead to an environment where no one but the mega corporations (like activision) will be able to keep pace(yes let's create an environment where guys who would jack prices on a game way up because its popular call the shots, I'm seeing several ways that's gonna bite us in the ass).

Hell the fact that two formats exists at the same time is causing issues, proof that next time we should wait till the format sh*t is settled before creating consoles because having multiple formats in play just causes issues in the long run.

Devs should be able to make and fail on a disk based game without worrying about their studio collapsing ,yet its happening left and right, its kinda starting to look like a graveyard out there and multi disks (and multi formats) are the cause of it.

I wish Konami would have done this with MGS4 & MGO. MGO is suppose to be a stand alone game, right? Then why doesn't it have it's own disk? I don't mind starting up MGS4 every time I want to go play MGO(which is far more often that playing MGS4).

Basically, I support the Rage devs if they want to put the multiplayer on a seperate disc.

I wouldnt care at all if Single was one disc, and Multi was another. Least then you wouldn't Disc Swap in the middle of the story.

Hell, I loved Lost Odyssey to death, and that was 4 Discs. I dont see the big whoop about disc swapping.

Mind you....my 360 is about 30cm away from me right now, so its not like I have to get up anyway.

I wouldn't really mind but I can see this getting annoying after a while. Some PC games made you pop in disc 1 for single-player and disc 2 for multi-player. So you insert disc 2 and then start up the game. But no, you had to start the game with disc 1, select multi-player, insert disc 2 and play. But yeah that was old times. If they make it so you can start the game from the multi-player disc it should be alright. But if I had a choice I would go for PS3.

Also I would want to have missed the MGS4 mandatory install. I loved watching Snake smoke a couple of cigarettes while doing it too.

I actually really like this idea - if you don't like the multiplayer? Sell it and keep the single player. If you love the multiplayer but can't be arsed to play the single player? Sell it.

Could be a nice move for used game sales - and it should REALLY impact too much on the retail sales of the game itself seeing as you're only reselling sections. Could actually instigate more brand loyalty.

all i want to know is what is in this game that's making it so big? AFAIK Crysis comes on 1 disc and it's graphics appear to be far superior. So, why can Crysis do it and not Rage? Are there hundreds of different types of areas, requiring a multitude of different texture sets? - it's id so the answer is probably no.

So are they just being shitty devs or - for some reason - complete sony shills?

hmmm

He may be acting like a fanboy prick but he has a minor point; latest indications showed the framerate for Rage on the 360 being twice that of the PS3 version.

Of course what mrandydixon fails to factor in is the fact that the game is unfinished and therefore that particular nugget of information is subject to change...

I definitely have no gripes about dual-discs. PS1 and Saturn had multiple games that made you swap. If anything, this will add a new, small dynamic to the experience- OOOH! I have TWO choices! Choose wisely and be immersed.

To be fair, games like Lost Odyssey, Star Ocean the Last Hope, Infinite Undiscovery, and Blue Dragon all shipped with multiple discs. But then again, those were single player RPG experiences. For an action shooter with some sort of racing and exploration component. If the multiplayer portion on a secondary disc, I will be purchasing the PS3 version, despite any technical or performance issues. Granted there will probably be some sort mandatory install, thank go I replaced my 60gb hard drive with a 500gb hard drive.

People are missing the point.Having multiple discs is a set back.I admit that it's not a huge deal, but this is a new generation and if Sony can offer media with more space than MS should have done the same. Also I have not switched discs since the PSX so no it was not a regular thing in gaming outside of some PSX games.FYI,FF7 was on 3 discs and not 4.Comparing disc swapping to installs isn't a fare comparison. Some of you 360 fans are just looking for a way to justify the 360's obvious set back.Installs are actually used because it helps with run the game better, whereas disc swapping is used for storage limitations. So they two are incompatible since large games do not require an install (see Killzone 2 and inFamous for examples).I don't like installs either, but there are ways to work around needing an install unlike needed more space for 360 games.

@LsTr_Of_SmG I don't know if you're claim was that used game sales would benefit game developers or not, but developers see a 0% profit from anything used. If ten copies of RAGE sell, but everyone on earth sells it to Gamestop/picks it up used from Gamestop, they're fucked! Well...maybe not id, heh. But you get the gist.

@TheChemist Final Fantasy VII was three disks. :)

Honestly, after installing the CD version of World of Warcraft combined with the eight years of updates, they could make me switch disks before I shot every bullet and it'd feel convenient.

But, in all honesty, I think switching disks is the least of anyone's concerns and there should definitely exist a more viable reason to opt for Playstation or Xbox than the thought of having to switch disks. Not to mention the fact that most people usually play through the one player campaign, then solely play multiplayer thereafter, but maybe that's just me.
