Never has the name RAGE been more appropriate for console gamers, with word that non-computer versions of id Software's upcoming shooter will have some controversial requirements -- whichever machine you pick.
The Xbox 360 version will need three DVDs in order to house all the pretty images of hideous mutants, while the PS3 version carries an 8GB installation. Ouch!
"Sony was great. Kudos to Sony for letting us do that. They don't allow every game to do that. So definitely, hats off," said creative director Tim Willits. He also recommended that 360 users still install the game, and that they can "Install the first disc, the first chapter, the first half of the game, then when you're done, uninstall and install disc two. You don't really need to install the multiplayer disc if you're really tight on hard disk space."
I argued in a freelance article last week that consoles had become little more than crappy PCs, and stuff like this really hammers it home. Remember when the benefits of consoles were the ability to just throw in a disc and start playing? Kudos to id for doing their best, but I'm starting to really struggle to find the pros of console gaming anymore.

Well multiple disks is something you can't really do anything about. But yeah, those mandatory installs are kind of killing the "console convenience advantage."
Like I've said before, I also think that hooking up consoles to the internet was the worst thing to happen to the video game industry in years. Oh well
HDD technology is really progressing at a snale's pace on current gen devices. For God sakes, I have 25GB of data to bring onto the Vita day one, and Sony wants me to pay $150 for 32GB of proprietary SD storage? Microsoft wants me to pay the same amount for 250GB of space as a 2TB form factor? Seriously?
Also, what llort het said about hooking up console to the internet. I agree with that.
Lol rgea? Iv nevr herd dis game.
But the pros of console gaming will always be the steady and sometimes overwhelming stream of excellent games and the ease of playing them on your couch the way god intended.
Did you miss the bit where I never said it was mandatory? Because I never said it was mandatory. I said it was recommended.
Reading's fun.
That being said, the more I see of Rage, the less I want it, and I used to be very excited about it. All the commercials seem to feature a LOT of the classic "running backwards while shooting" mechanic, and I'm kind of tired of that.
Anyway 2-3 discs is nothing compared to how bad it got with PC CDs just before they were phased out. IIRC My Klingon Academy had 6 CDs
Those each only fit on one Xbox 360 disc/require an 8GB install? Lame.
This implies that one can't just do that on the 360. You're an editor, you do the math.
"Come at me bro!"
What the fuck, I was hoping for 4 or more.
Fuckers lied when they said this would be a huge game.
Man why do people hate multiple discs so much. I'd love to have a 6 disc game cone out. Guess I'll just stick to my old PC FMV titles.
Now those are multiple disc heaven.
Still can't believe "Mandatory installs". It compliments their obnoxious eternal updates. Sorry, I'll take more disks over that situation.
I just hope the next round of consoles they don't pull this crap where there are "different models". Sony and Microsoft would have been better off just making a single device with one price (still would have sold out for months). Sony would have started making money faster by cutting the unnecessary extras in the 60GB version, and Microsoft would have all 360's with HDD's.
Did you forget to read the part where you NEED to install each disk to run on par with the PS3, and doing so would take 21-23 gbs? Yeah, didn't think so.
- Castlevania Lord of Shadows (2 discs)
- Lost Odyssey (4 discs)
- Final fantasy VII (3 discs)
- Black Dahlia (8 discs)
- Baldur's Gate 2 (4 discs)
- Infinite Undiscovery (2 discs)
They're all wonderful games.
PC gamers have to be really sad to think that anyone is raging over this.
Go try to play Tekken 6 without installing it to the HD; sure it is optional, but the game take so long to load that you would be foolish to not think it was broken.
Rage will probably be just like Tekken 6, damn near unplayable without the download to the HD.
I mean, I can just trow the disk in when I come home and do some other stuff for the few min installing.
The real Problem with pc gaming, is for myself that the Internet allways keeps me away from the games.
You know what the pros are? Better Games.
"I don't think swapping multiple discs is that bad, but having to uninstall the previous disc just to pop in the next disc to install that one? Yeah... tedious and annoying already and the game isn't even out yet."
You don't HAVE to uninstall the first. He's just saying that if you're low on disc space you can, since you won't ever need to go back to disc 1 :)
Even you Sony and Microsoft Fanboys! (Sony and Microsoft might invest/improve that concept if Nintendo does it first!) *shot*
But seriously I'm sorry for anyone who downloads RAGE with mild internet speed for their PC.
Thank You.
No, I had to blow in my carts and clean my discs. Your house must've been immaculate.
Also, no DRM = console gaming still prevails.
Still though, having to install each disc separately is pretty tedious-sounding.
The only fault I can make for this, being on the 360, is that this could be easily mitigated with allowing use of 3rd party hard drives. I have a 500 gb external drive connectable via USB that could be usable, but instead, it's about being locked into using their proprietary HDDs. 16 gb of storage space, MS? I can piss more than that on the morning after a solid amount of drinking from the night prior.
