RAGE patch available for PC

8:00 AM on 10.10.2011   |   Jim Sterling

RAGE patch available for PC photo

A large PC patch for RAGE arrived this weekend, aiming to fix the grotesque graphical issues that many users complained about. It also gives players some actual video settings to tweak, rather than stick with threadbare menus. id Software justified the original lack of options, stating that it was to stop the game from screwing up further.

"The original release of RAGE does not expose many video/graphics options for people to tweak because some of these settings, although desirable from a quality perspective, simply will not work on specific configurations either due to hardware limitations and/or driver bugs," states the patch notes. "Due to popular demand for more video and graphics options, this patch updates the video settings menu and exposes several quality and performance settings."

Highlights of the patch include a VSync option, a texture cache and SLI support. Check out the patch summary below.

- Implemented workaround for AMD driver crash right after intro cinematic
on Win 7 32-bit systems.
- Disabled UBOs because they are causing animation issues with AMD drivers.
- Don't allow swap-tear to be enabled on AMD while the extension is not
exposed because it may crash.
- Support for new video settings: "texture cache", "vsync" and
"anisotropic filter"
- Automatically adjust vt_maxPPF based on the number of available cores.
- Improved performance for SLI cards when GPU transcode is enabled.
- Fix for GPU Transcoding option being disabled after exiting gameplay.
- Added safe mode to restore video settings to default values.
- Allow g_fov to be changed from the RAGE launch options in Steam.
- Server now forwards text chat from clients to all other clients while
in-game.

Man, all of the crap that AMD users have to put up with is exactly why I switched to Nvidia last week.

Glad to see you PC users getting a better experience. I just finished the game a couple of nights ago and liked it quite a bit. That last gun you get is a monster. :D

Apparently everyone has the freezes still...smooth 60 FPS Maxed settings then oooops the game just stops for 10 seconds then decides it will start again....fucking retarded i used to think ID was one of those industry giants who i could look to to constantly produce a AAA quality game ESPECIALLY on PC but now i realize im wrong and from the revies ive seen this game just doesnt have enough going for it to deal with all this bullshit.

Ehhh...nope. Textures still look like shit and I still get pop-in. Shame too. I really enjoy the gameplay, but it's a constant reminder that I really had no need to put a 500 dollar graphics card in a PC anymore.

>VSYNC

Thank god almighty.
Force Vsync on with my GPU and didn't work for rage.

Rage
>200 fps
>Texture popins
>Screen tearing out the ass

Now I may get 60 fps with less texture garbage and less screen tearing.

I don't mean to defend id or the problems RAGE has, but I think apart of all the tech issues it might be zenimax's overly eager attitude to release the game on consoles asap.

@Clance: Different PS3 SKUs have different hard drives. This game makes heavy use of the hard drive for streaming textures, so it's performance will be slightly different across different PS3s. In addition, the way the PS3 hard drives are formatted leads to fragmentation over time, so the same PS3 may have different performance with the game depending on whether the hard drive is new or has been used for a while.

shame more and more games for the pc first need a few weeks worth of patches before they are actually on the level you expect them to be at launch. about the amd related problems in games I have heard just as many problems with nvidea cards. also most of them are fixed quite fast especially if you look at the fact that both amd and nvidea bring out driver fixes quite fast be it prerelease.
I do agree that amd has a little more problems at the start but its definately not worth the performance drop at the same price range nvidea brings.

I was one of the few lucky amd users lol. Running crossfire 5770's RAGE worked for me day one at 60fps. Still running great today, aboslutely loved this fucking game, especially cranking the fov to 120 and using the famous id tech strafe jumping to travel more so than using a vehicle.

Tip to pc gamers; Play RAGE like Quake @ 110-120 FOV, on nightmare difficulty, the experience is incredible! :)

i will still wait for another update... this one fixes nothing. Who knows maybe after six months of updates they will finish developing this game... i font think so, i think they will drop it after another update.
really, i have said it before, this is a shitstorm for id, they should address the gamers and say "we fucked it up". Because they really did.

For the people have vsync issues ( with nvidia ). I had to go into the the nvidia control panel, and create a profile for Rage and set vsync always on with that. Doing the "always force vsync" didn't work until i created the profile. Fixed my problem. this patch also fixed all the other problems. The game runs at a constant 60fps and looks great.

running this problem free on a 4850 with all the fancy new settings maxed, all the nay-say'ers can eat it, this game is awesome. Texture cache has completely removed any pop-in from my game. im actually HOPING for some DLC for this one.

I like how the vsynch option never saves as "on" for me. I still have to force it in drivers. I just don't even know anymore. I dont think Im ever going to pre-purchase an iD product ever again.

"The original release of RAGE does not expose many video/graphics options for people to tweak because some of these settings, although desirable from a quality perspective, simply will not work on specific configurations either due to hardware limitations and/or driver bugs,"

And here we thought ID knew what PC gaming was all about. We know what our systems can and can't do. If we have to play on low settings or upgrade to a new graphics card to max it out, we'll do it. Just give us that option.

This is annoying as I'm still undecided what platform to get Rage for. Theres been different complaints about each one. Although the biggest complaint I have heard so far for the 360 is that its on three discs. Really want to try this one.

This is id's best game to date. It's a shame that it's plagued by some hiccups.

@AngrySouske

The biggest complaint you've heard about Rage is that the 360 version is on 3 discs? That's the smallest complaint since that's been the most bug-free version.

@ ElektroDragon,

Why should they STFU? Personally I think they've had a right to be complaining in the circumstances. Hell, for many AMD users the game has been practically unplayable what with freezes, etc.

Nvidia fanboys always mention issues with ATI drivers but I can promise they are just repeating garbage they heard on the internet. I've been PC building and gaming for over 10 years now and I've never had a problem with ATI cards or their drivers. The last time I had any problems with Nvidia cards was with the Geforce 2 series (had issues with older games) and those days are long over. Fanboys of any particular brand of computer parts need to stfu.
