Rage is so big it can be digitally distributed photo

A few weeks ago there was a big drama over id Software’s upcoming FPS Rage being split up on two disks for the Xbox 360. One would suppose that the game is fairly large, but only in a 12-inch turkey sub sense (as opposed to the meatball one, which is wicked hefty). Shacknews (via 1UP) is reporting that despite Rage’s girth, it may still be digitally distributed.

The news stems from a response by id’s creative director Tim Willits, who told 1UP that “We haven’t figured out what we want to do yet. But I do want to fix the fact that John [Carmack] said [digital distribution is] not going to happen. What I’m saying is that’s not true.” Willits then went on to explain that Carmack made the comment about the size before the development team was even ready to speculate on the actual size of the game.

So Rage, in all its scary monster glory, could still be hitting Steam once the development team figures out how big their eventual product will be. For the sake of argument, let’s say that Rage ends up around 25 GB. Would you download it or buy the full version?

Do you mean so big it "can't" be digitally distributed?

25GB? Even though I have 2 250GB HDDs, they can screw off, unless it was suddenly changed to Left 4 Dead, then I'll download it off Steam. You could never have too much zombie apocalypse.

Honestly, I don't give a shit about this game anymore. John Carmack can shove it.

And that is why PC gamers have the best deal.

Well, it is going to be published by EA, and we haven't heard about DRM yet, so I don't know how long that will hold for...

Hah, I misread the title as "Rape is so big..." Oops.

If it's that big, I'll just buy the disc. Or in this game's case, I won't get either.

I don't see how a game could ever be too big for digital distribution like Carmack said. That doesn't even make sense! Digital distribution is the ONLY distribution medium where size doesn't matter. I don't care if it's 2GB or 20GB, if the game is good I'll make the space on my HDD for it (or get a bigger HDD). Download times aren't an issue for me, I can wait a day or two longer to play a game if it's a ridiculous DL size.

I agree with moocow. The only limit is your hard drive space. I love digital distribution (I buy all my PC games on either Steam or Direct 2 Drive)

I dunno, I have enough storage on my PC that I wouldn't mind a 50gb game rofl. Though my gaming drive is smaller then my storage drives. I have slower storage drives and a high end WD 150gb drive for my OS and games.

Yeah, I'd get it digitally, cos I'm a digital distribution whore. Steam likes it nasty.

I don't see the need for a game being 25GB in size. Really, I've seen plenty of amazing things pulled off with games that're only 5-6GB (if that) in size. It really just sounds as though they're trying to make Rage sound more relevant solely based on the size of its assets.

If Rage is going to be 2 discs - 2 DVDs - on the 360, wouldn't that make its size closer to 9GB at the most (or 17GB if they're double-layer discs)? Anyway, I prefer games on consoles. Would they make a digitally-distributed version for the 360?

Nothing i have seen or heard about this game makes me think its worth anywhere near 25gb of hdd space. Still, this is one way to combat piracy... a hell of a lot less people will download something that big.

Until one of the 'rippers' gets their hands on it... their compression techniques can make games less than half the standard size. It takes a lot longer to install, of course. But still, for something like this, it would make sense for Rage themselves to do it.
