Online retailer Gamestar has published a Wii pre-order list, and making a surprise appearence on that list is Radirgy: Noir -- the sequel to Milestone's terribly underrated cel-shaded shmup, Radirgy.
If you missed Radirgy on the Dreamcast, you missed a truly unique and awesome shooter. Thankfully, the game has been made available on the Wii as part of the Milestone Ultimate Shooting Collection, so you can still get caught up before the sequel drops. Gamestar's listing has the Japanese release date set at February 10th, with a ¥6,090 price point.
Like its predecessor, Radirgy: Noir was built for Sega's delicious Naomi arcade hardware, and as you'll see in the video after the jump, looks more or less exactly the same. The difference this time around is two-player co-op, which raises the question about whether the Wii port will support online play. My guess is no, but this is still a very welcome addition to the Wii library.
The US publisher for the Gamecube version of Radirgy said that hopefully they'd be able to get the next shmup and Radirgy in one package after they canceled the US release. Here's hoping this releases outside of Japan; I'd hate to mod my Wii just to play this.
@Pedro - Milestone has been a consistent supporter of Nintendo platforms, as every shmup they've made has wound up on the Gamecube and/or Wii at some point, though they've also made less-frequent appearances on other systems. As for Western hopes for this one, let's get Illvelo on shelves first, finally...
@ SleepyInsomniac - I think you are talking about Milestone Ultimate Shooter Collection that Topher just referred to, which includes Chaos Field, Radirgy, Karous. That actually came out this year on the Wii, for a mere $20.
I love this game...granted I still haven't played the original and only watched people hog it when I went to the station at Otakon. then to makes matters worse, I never got the GC port and it's rather hard to find now...
I may pick this up...but seeing it's wii, I dunno. I personally prefer 360/PS3 for shumps but whatever. >_>
A very underrated SHMUP indeed, especially since you brought it to my attention Topher. <3
That absorption system is what made the game so manageable, addictive (as eye candy), and yet still a very good challenge. One thing that also surprised me was the funky soundtrack it had. I hope there is more of the same.
Am I the only one that doesn't like Milestone? I love me a good shmup, Ikaruga being one of my favorites, but I thought every game on the Milestone collection was horrible.
I've been meaning to pick up Ultimate Shooting Collection, but Toph, you know about Rockin' Android's games? Suguri is on sale for like 13 bucks right now.
Not to be a jerk, but I just never liked Milestone shmups all that much. Granted, I'm not very good at shmups, but I still really loved Triggerheart Exelica, Ikaruga, Zero Gunner 2, and Under Defeat for Dreamcast. But for some reason, the Milestone ones just never clicked with me. Even still, I'm glad for everyone else who's getting a sequel to a game that they like. :D

This makes my trousers tight.
I'll have to add this to my ever growing list of games to look for in the games shop next time I'm in Ponty. Dreamcast version, of course.
It's awesome and you should buy it.

nono he's talking about a standalone which was in the works but got canned...sadly.

This is awesome news!
