Racing genre is dying, but Black Rock Studios will save it photo

Recently, Develop sat down with Black Rock Studios to discuss the company's latest racing game, Split/Second. The developer, whose most recently released title was Pure, had some very interesting things to say about the current state of the racing genre.

"If you look at the sales figures, the racing genre is in many respects dying out -- take Mario Kart out of the equation and the category is in a dire way," said studio head Tony Beckwith.

"We’re all fans of street racing here, but as a genre it is relatively stale -- the evolution is only coming from how you customise cars, which can only serve to remove you from the action -- I think Split/Second will do the opposite," game director Nick Baynes said.

I must say, those are some bold words. I truly hope Black Rock can deliver on these promises, but for the time being, I'm going to keep on playing Burnout Paradise, and continue looking forward to Need for Speed SHIFT.

It's not mentioned in that article, but I hope this guy is only talking about arcade style racers. Otherwise, he must not have heard of people recently plunking down forty dollars to play a glorified demo.

It's gonna be pretty awkward if the game tanks.

I need to see some hands-on impression first. These guys are hyping themselves up a little high, hope they can achieve their intended success.

It's funny how they did'nt mention Burnout, GT , Forza, TOCA, Midnight club, Motorstorm, NFS, Wipeout and Colin Mcrae franchises when saying the racing genre is dying. Let's not forget FUEL as well. Why does'nt he just go ahead and make the assumption that PC gaming is dead as well??

'evolution is only coming from how you customise cars'

Which is good, I slave over how my car(s)looks in any racing game, it's the same with all my freinds, they constantly want to change how a car looks in a game. In fact I spend more time cutomizing a car then driving it in a game!!

Sure the number of racing games are slowing down, but to say it's dying is a massive, over-exaggerated statement. Talk about hyping up your own game.

Now I have extremely high expectations from your game, and if you fail to live up to them, Black Rock Studios, I'll just not buy your game.

id have to day burnout was one of the best purchases for my ps3 to day, the updates kept coming and i loved every megabyte of now hotness i got from it. i bought the first pack of cars to support them for all the work they put into past updates, but then they started getting greedy and started releasing everything with a price tag, and not cheap price tags either. otherwise i would agree with the guy, minus mario kart and burnout driving games are blah, boring, ill go outside and drive.

this is coming from the "pure" creators. it seems they only speak for themselves about a dying racing game. if they can't make a good one then nobody can, except for forza, gt1-5, n4s, burnout, tokyo extreme racer, motorstorm, wipeout, midnight club and road rash but the the genre is dying. that type of blatant disregard for anything that they did'nt do and is successful is fuct up. and they had the balls to even mention mario cart as the savior of racing games. did'nt gta have car racing too?

So just dissect the success of Mario Kart and see what makes Mario Kart successful.

F-Zero, WipEout, Mario Kart, Wave Race, Road Rash and Excite franchises are my favorites.

Excitebots just came out and while it basically is centered on Excitetruck's core gameplay, the crazy and fresh new gameplay mechanics and game modes make it an even better. Really great game.

I've grown tired of the standard racing games such as Need for Speed, Forza, Ridge Racer,Project Gotham, Midnight Club, Gran Turismo and even Burnout.

Burnout alone is proof positive that this guy is an asshole. I've never seen a console game get so much post-release support and I've never seen a racing game get more post-release demand from consumers. Not to mention the ridiculous amount of other arcade AND sim racers that are still chewing bubble gum and kicking ass.

And if you don't chew Big Red, then fuck you.

Meh...racing games seem to be doing alright as far as I can tell. Pure and Motorstorm are two perfect examples. What can you really do to revolutionize the gameplay in these titles?

@John Johnson: Speaking of the glorified demo...when the fuck is GT5 proper coming out? I didn't buy that overpriced Logitech wheel for nothing.

I fucking love racing games and i think 'pure' is one of the most fun racing games i have played in quite a while... Burnout Paradise is a given. But, come on, this guy says the genre is "relatively stale" and you all disagree with him!?

GT , Forza, TOCA, Midnight club, NFS, Wipeout, Colin Mcrae, Ridge Racer, Project Gotham, Gran Turismo... Which one of these games is pushing the genre forwards? I'm not at all saying they are bad games. But, they are all fairly stale. Most of these titles/franchises are on their 4th, 5th, maybe 6th iteration.

Rather than call him a cock. I think we should give him a chance to back up his statement. 'Pure' was a pretty good attempt, not entirely original, but good, solid fun! Which is a push in the right direction.. Lets see what they can do :)

i think this guy is getting too caught up in gamer forum talk. remember gamers seem to hate all games no matter the genre.
for example
"I've grown tired of the standard racing games such as Need for Speed, Forza, Ridge Racer,Project Gotham, Midnight Club, Gran Turismo and even Burnout."
all top sellers that carry huge fanbase for good reason

I've noticed a considerable drop in racing game sales in my store as well. It used to be very very easy to get preorders on the next Need for Speed, but gamers have been burned for the last few years with crappy products and its just become a tougher sell. Then there's Gran Turismo Prologue which is pretty much just the demo for GT5 pissing off all the sony folks, and while Mario Kart and ExciteBots are great games, there's a COMPLETE lack of serious quality racing games on the Wii. The only series I almost never get complaints on when I sell them is Burnout because its a racing game that's got the actual racing formula right. Its just fun to play and that keeps people coming back to it. The customizing cars and all that is great, but if your game plays like bowling a bag of eggs down a wet hallway its sales are going to stop quickly. Black Rock has their work cut out for them and I wish them the best of luck.
I don't know, I miss Rad Racer...

Track Mania, GRID, DIRT, and plenty of others see plenty of use with my G25 Racing wheel. Love me some racing games both true to life and arcade.
