For those of you who eat, drink, and sleep Zelda, prepare for a double-whammy of sadness: Dampe (aka Richard Denton) is reported to have passed away this weekend in a fatal car accident. Dampe had been working on an unofficial 2D remake of the Ocarina of Time. The OoT2D website has been closed down by Dampe’s family, and the details of the accident as well as the project can be found in the forums for the game.

It should be noted that several users across the Web claiming to “know” Dampe suggest it’s likely he has e-faked his own death in order to get out of developing a game that had begun to lose his interest, not to mention the increasing amount of stress coming from the hype surrounding the title. It seems possible, considering the fact that when I was his age (15), I faked my death to get out of going to Chuck E. Cheese because seriously, those animatronic monsters are ka-ree-py.

Regardless, do you agree with his “family's” decision to terminate the project he had dedicated so much of his life to, or would finishing the game be the ultimate tribute to him?

[Update: Like Elvis and Tupac, Richard Denton is very much alive, as was reported this morning. Before you go getting all soggy-eyed over the next allegedly corpsified programmer, make sure you see a body first.

Just kidding about Tupac though, that bitch is dead.]

It would have been pretty awesome if this was completed. That's a shame.

They (dampe's family) shut the site down. It's dead in the water.

That's really shame that such a talented person died and even more of a shame that his work will never be finished, but you have to respect his families wishes to want to move on.

He may not really be dead since it says some people that knew him said he faked his death.

I feel bad for the kid, it sucks when anyone that young dies. Plus anyone working on remaking any Zelda game is the man in my book.

It sucks the game won't be finished, I was looking forward to it, but like icarus said you have to respect his families wishes.

Why? Why would he be a retard and fake his death? Are the NintendoLawyers doing thier HulaHula-dance over the 2D OoT?

It's more likely that the people claiming to know him are just looking for attention.

If there's one thing I hate more than people who go to extremes in order to get out something where they obviously bit off more than they could chew... it's e-fans who moan and groan about how they cried for hours upon learning that their forum role model supposedly died. Come back and talk to me when you've lost someone truly personal and close to you that hits a bit closer to home eh?

If it comes out that the guy really died, I'll the be the first one there to express my condolences as it's never a good thing when something like occurs. But I'll sleep just as well tonight as before.

But, it really smells of something else... something sloppy that will definately come to light soon I'm willing to bet. And, if it comes out that this was all a sham...whoopti-do, just another example of some loser looking for attention only to find out when they couldn't deliver. Then, instead of being a man and admitting as such and either looking for help or respectfully closing the project, he pulls some emo stunt because he's a bit immature.

Like I said, if I'm dead wrong (no pun intended), I'll be the first one to admit as such. If I'm not, add another to the loser pool.

In all honestly, whether he faked his death or not, the game has been in production for years. His site has been up and down. It's been very iffy the whole time, and it probably never would have been released.

the game has been in the make for a while... as gamers, yes we would want to see the final finished game. but we must respect his pass-away. at least for now, hault on production, once the family is over the death n all, if they see it in their hearts to let his final project be finished, then later on re-open the project.

I just realized something. This is probably the first Dtoid post about someone's death that didn't make fun of the person.

At least it wasn't that Daniel Barras guy...no matter how many rumors of that being a hoax and Nintendo shutting down production and lacks of updates from him, it still seems like THAT OOT remake is still going to come out one day. (PS anyone know the official website for that project?)

But still, that sucks that this kid died if he did. This IS the internet, though, so I'm pretty skeptical.

I've never heard of anyone faking their death in order to abandon a project.

But I have heard of noobs complaining about a project to the point where the author of said project quits development of it. The author of one of the first CPS2 emulators comes to mind.

How sad if he did die. What a shame. But faking his death to stop working on 2dOoT? I doubt it. Even if that game turns out to be crap, it will still sell a lot of copies. With Zelda and all of its loyalists, even if you attach that brand to a flaming turn, the product will still move.

Anyways, cool article, good stuff.

Nevermind about the sale of that game. It's "unoffical". I hate when I scan shit and not read it. But the substance of my post is still in tact, that game would've been popular.

Can some intrepid intarwebs user track down a death notice or an obituary? I tried a while ago but I quickly lost interest.

I will make an update tomorrow or as soon as I know something. One of the people claiming to know Dampe went so far as to contact his high school, so I'm sure whether or not he's dead will become clear shortly.

If he really IS dead though, a few people are going to feel pretty stupid... I will try to interview them to gauge the level of feeling stupid-ness, and of course post it here for everyone to see.

As a cyborg from the future sent back to make sure the world is well-populated with curly-haired white kids I have no emotions, but pointing to evidence that strongly suggests he might have pulled all this to get out of the massive undertaking he was clearly struggling with is just common sense. So no, I wont feel stupid.

:(. It makes me sad to hear that that kid died. He was truly doing the Lord's work. I like to think that hes up there in heaven smiling down on us, with a shiny golden harp in one hand, and a completed copy of OoT2d in the other. He's in a better place now, waiting patiently for us all to drop our eternal quarter into the big arcade in the sky :)

As the headline indicates, this article has been updated with a link to todays report on Richard Denton having faked his own death to get out of his little pet project. For those of you who actually felt sorry for him and his family, I hope you have learned a thing or two about the human race today.
