it sounds to me like most of the things oculus are hyping haven't happened yet, and all they have done is to make a VR headset that's lighter and has a lower latency than the ones that have been on the market for the last 20 years. fine, but is that really as revolutionary as they say it is? until it's actually living up to the hype, and they make one that normal people can afford i'm not impressed.
lo and behold they cancelled that
How long will it take for this?
Which is why when he says ______ is the future I take it with a grain of salt
by "living up to the hype" i mean delivering on the things Oculus said they would. you said yourself that the FOV and resolution was poor, and although Carmack is saying those are "minor issues that will be addressed in time", they aren't minor issues, and were made out to be important features that differentiated this product from others in the Oculus kickstarter video.
even if they do have a plan to fix these problems, is it still going to be relatively cheap once they have? i'm not confident of that.
Limited FOV and poor resolution is simply a matter of scaling the hardware based on cost. For a first-gen, mass market model that doesn't cost several thousand dollars, its a VERY minor issue.
Again, it all boils down to scale. No one mass manufactures the parts needed for a wide-FOV, high resolution mass market 3D glasses because the industry hasn't even gotten around to manufactures limited-FOV, low resolution mass market 3D glasses. You're putting the cart before the horse.
You forgot that the screens are tiny, like 2 inches, so imagine a regular 24inch 180P PC monitor or 60Inch Tv and then imagine 2 inch screen with 1080P res?!
The pixel density is so tight that you wont see any pixels, and the image quality is better then looking at monitor with compatible resolution
I would politely suggest however that VR may work better in public space, than to home down the design to make compromises, just to be able to field a $500 price point system for home players.
Having a full perspective of the action really isn't that helpful when your limbs can't be used to interact with the environment.
People can drop all the money on this that they want, I'll be waiting for the headset that plays games via a coma induced dream state.
There is no point in wasting time trying to perfect gun aiming. Just drop the fucking gun and do something else.
