Cause we're seeing the beginning of the end? Subscription bases for a single game? Man that's gonna suck if it becomes the norm. Sometimes it's hard enough to convince your friends to play the same games nevermind a subscription ontop of that.

This doesn't surprise me, I had a chance to personally speak with the creator of quake live, and he was a massive dick of a mac fanatic who works for the chicago stock exchange running their servers. Honestly, after talking with him, I have no intentions of ever playing.

i wasnt able to figure out how to get the game running (i didnt try too hard). I use Chrome and IE, but apparently was still doing something wrong.

I don't see what there is to complain about. Everything that Quake Live was, which was a pretty version of Q3 minus a few maps is still FREE. Its just additional content that you have to pay for and quite honestly, as a person who plays Quake Live, I don't feel at all like I need to pay for that additional content.

While I know some people will be upset by this plan.. I think one thing needs to be clarified. The non subscription fee will contain all of the content that was available from QuakeLive's beta period (which was up till a few days ago)and was quite a bit of content as is. This extended stuff is for those that want more than what was already offered in the beta.

Think of the PRO Subscription package as a XBLA Gold membership.. only with the awesome ability to invite Silver XBLA members to play with you AND the ability to have your game hosted on a DEDICATED server of YOUR choosing. This is a HUGE benefit for those who cannot afford to pay for a clan server for $60 a month.

So lets say you have 3 members in your clan who have pro subs.. you then have these 3 members invite 3 players each, thats 12 players total playing in a server that you selected in...lets say for example.. Dallas, TX. Now all of your clan mates that live on the west, and east coast can have a stable experience together on a match that you have total control over. I am more than whiling to pay $47 a year for that kind of service.

This plan in general is extremely good for Clans and Community Groups that dedicate their playtime to QuakeLive.. and for those that just want a quick frag every now and then, the default package has plenty of meat, and you can always get invited by one of us to play some of the pro-maps or other game modes.

and people also forget the fact that with PC games the servers don't magically pop up, there are people activly paying to keep these servers up, usually spending about £20 a month for it, this is a good deal to get your own dedi server for games.

Niero obviosly needs to be quiet and go play more haloz and gearz. leave the FPS talk to real manly men cause Q3 is and will always be the best multiplayer fps. 4 bucks to host a server is damn cheap. the premium one is kinda disappointing though. i'd do it if it was like 10 bucks one time pay for all the premium features although camping grounds really is too godlike and I could play that map forever.

Not happy about this, and I can imagine a fair few people aren't either, but eh, at least you don't HAVE to subscribe in any way whatsoever.

I love gaming and anytime I have ever talked to friends about gaming which is often I would mention Quake I would tell them the best free multiplayer game is called Quake Live all you need is a plug in and your all set to play. I love that game when I logged in today and saw that now in order to enjoy the new things you have to pay for it it made me very sad I might end up doing that but Quake got all the players that it has from being a great FREE game.

Sorry but a subscription for access to new maps and modes .... on a game that's based off a what 15 year old game(?) with some slight graphic tweaks, that I wouldn't give the time of day, Sorry but I just had to lol.

The only reason I would consider giving this any semblance of a pass however is because they are running dedicated servers. Still you neeeed to get your Quake on your better off Installing Q2 firing up weapons factory or gloom and playing some decent mods.

Personally I've gone over to TF2 (which is now Mac compatible), tho I will say that I am seriously considering donating to some of the server hosts. Of course QL could in theory be convenient for people trying to surreptitiously dodge work.

*Reinstalled Quake 3* I'm not going to pay to just to do what I want on my server and play maps. If that was the case for Counter-Strike, I'd guess there wouldn't be ANY Counter-Strike. :P

John Carmack is among the greatest game developers of all time. Haters need to go back to games like Halo and CoD where no real skill is required.

I'm planning on getting premium. I'll get pro once they give me the option to ban or reduce damage on certain weapons. The LG is the most overpowered weapon in that game and it ruins the game play.

's acceptable (though not getting the new maps if you don't pay is really silly (slightly remedied by the invite thing)) and understandable (especially the "Pro" option with the servers, very good deal in fact). My (and lots of people's) only major gripe is being forced to pay annually. They'd have some of my money if I could pay monthly or quarterly, instead they now have nothing as I'm too pathetically poor to pay for 12 months at once.

Also yeah, paying for this is certainly "for quakers", hence "premium" and "pro". Everyone else just don't pay, play the still free game with some ads and most of the maps (more than all that were already available), enjoy!

As a Quake series fanatic, I feel obligated to pay for at least one subscription tier — even if I can't play as often as I'd like. Since I'm not interested in starting private server matches — at the moment — I'll be grabbing the premium tier subscription.

I can understand some people being upset about the "fracturing" of the player base with an optional subscription model, but if my little 24 bucks a year can help to keep the joy of Quake Live free for everyone else, I'll do it.

You'll still get what you have as a free player just as before, this subscription plan honestly looks like its aiming for the core community. Nothing to bitch about.
