The ESRB has a habit of letting proverbial cats out of their proverbial bags when it comes to upcoming releases, and in this case, the cat sprinted around the room, chewed a plant to bits and peed on the drapes.
It seems that the ESRB has a listing for Quake 3: Team Arena, only this isn't the PC release from a few years back. This time, it's listed as an upcoming Xbox 360 title under development by Pi Studios. According to the GameAlmighty piece where I originally found all this info, Pi Studios is an Austin-based company, which puts them very geographically close to original Q3:TA devs (and current IP holders) id.
An ESRB listing isn't a definite guarantee that this game is coming, but it's certainly a huge flashing neon sign pointing in that direction. Since id, and, more specifically, Mr. Carmack, are so keen on the PC and PC-esque platforms (read: Xbox 360), it wouldn't surprise me to see this title hit the XBLA. After all, if companies can release twenty year old arcade games based on the premise of fuelling America's rampant alcoholism, there's room enough in there for the pinnacle of multiplayer deathmatch.
I don't know how they could port it: Shadowrun was built from the ground up to support controllers and mice equally. This game was built purely for use with a mouse, port it to a console and you end up with something akin to the Unreal Championship games for XBox. Ie. sux0rz
Seriously, has anyone gone back and tried playing the original Quake? All I can say is, it's... so... BROWN! Quake II was a little better, but only in gray instead of brown. I didn't even buy Quake III Arena when it came out, I was a little tired then of the same old formula id would foist out on us, and Q3A didn't even have a storyless single player game to play through. I can think of about a hundred better multiplayer games; the only reason any of the Quake deserve any merit is because of the oft incredible work of fan modders who drastically change the way the game is played. Team Fortress will always rock.
Provided the controls get the attention they need, I have no objections to playing Q3 again without having to throttle down my PC every time (Intel Core procs seem to run Q3 engine games at ~120% past sync). Color me intrigued.

...I guess I'll go die in the corner now...
I'm excited about Q3:TA, but we all know Unreal Tournament is the pinnacle of deathmatch.
(You're probably right, though.)
Doom for XBLA was great! Although I think it came with Doom 3 Resurrection of Evil for Xbox, it's still nice to have a classic like that in the arcade.
