Quake 3 for XBLA is 'very close' [Update] photo

Quake 3 Arena for the Xbox Live Arcade was announced at QuakeCon 2007, so it makes sense that people are wondering where the hell it is. Well, the wait is just about over, says id Software's John Carmack.

He recently told Joystiq that they are "actually very close to finishing up," though he drops no specific dates. It's not like they have to rush, though. It's not exactly a new game. Destructoid Contributor Adam Dork responds: "It is nearing completeion....and then it needs MS certification so...2010?"

In related news, Quake Live, the PC broswer Quake-based productivity killer, is supposedly live. It doesn't seem very live this morning. It seems that the servers are being spanked by the F5 button.

Hey, who played this on the Dreamcast? [raises hand]

[Update: Apparently there's a Twitter for the game. Get in line: 113,000 have signed up, according to the feed.]

I played it on the PC, but then my brother gave me his copy for the DC a long while back. I played it for a bit then turned off, never to play it again because I didn't have a keyboard or mouse and I hated using the DC controller.

Its still a fun game on pc. Not 100% sure itll work well on a console (being an insanely fast twitch reflex type fps game, not often played with a gamepad...) but heres hoping.

I played it on DC, and UT. They're both weird.

I kinda remember hearing the DC version of Quake 3 actually could play online with PC players. That must've been interesting.

Shoop: They disabled that option a few weeks later when the DC players were being destroyed by PC players.

I will download this the moment it comes out.

I actually hope they make Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory available on XBLA at some point. THAT would be fun for a Live Party.

DC Quake 3 is how I learned to use a mouse/keyboard setup. I would never buy Quake 3 for Live though; I'd rather play Quake Live for free.

Lol Quake3 on a console? It didnt work the first time and it wont work this time, the super fast reflexes necessary to play Q3 would make a game between Live players look like amateur night. It would be great if Live servers were crossed with PC servers for Q3, it would be like a turkey shoot for PC players.

Got from around 9k(yes over) in queue to around 1k when the servers died. Sad panda face lasted all night. I miss my quake 3 arena.

I thought the game was pretty good for the Dreamcast.
For multiplayer...using its dial up internet.
It ran smooth and there were always enough people
playing to keep the game going

Not sure I understand the need for this now. Quake Live is free. If you must use a controller attach one to your pc and go...

Yeah, I am with everyone else on this. Quake Live is such a fast paced game that PAYING to play it on a less intuitive console controller seems a bit stupid.
