Quadriplegic gamer makes a case for gaming as a positive photo

Speaking of gaming saving lives, here's some proof to that theory: 25 year old Robert Florio, a quadraplegic since age 11, says that gaming "made him feel as though his body was miraculously restored. (He games using his mouth to control the action.) Outdo that, bible thumpers.

Seriously though, this is a person I find truly inspiring, both personally and professionally. Since falling in love with games, he has set himself the goal of becoming a game designer to create titles that disabled people can play as well as anybody else. This evening, Florio will receive his bachelor's degree in a commencement ceremony from the Art Insitute of Pittsburgh's online division as well as the Dean's Merit Award.

Robert is already a part of a small group of gamers called Project Top Secret, whose aim is to design an online game where players engage in races with fantastic creatures. Veteran game programmer and consultant David Perry is helming the project, which will be published by Acclaim Entertainment after its completion.

"It was the only thing that got me excited about living again,"Florio said of gaming.

Amen to that.

That's inspiring and yeah it's cool, because video games can take you to worlds that the real world cannot. It gives people something creative to do. To me video games are art of the highest form. to bad they can't get the in game acting to the level of even anime :)

Reminded me of this story from a long time ago. Reworked 360 controller so it was able to be controlled with one had for a guy that lost an arm in Iraq.

That's pretty sweet for him. I've heard of people that only have one arm being thrilled by the Wii games that use only the Wiimote.

Yeah that story won me over completely.
Even though I'm a 15-20 hour a week gamer, I still feel like i could be making a better use of my time. But I didn't even stop to think about people not as lucky as I and how much of an impact games can make. I thank you for the gift of insight, Collete

Great story, finding something to do when you are in this state must be hard to do, I can't even imagine what he must have gone through. But the fact that he found something that made his life worth living is just great. Big props to him, and good luck in his game design future.

For every negative story we hear about games I'll bet there are at least 3 good ones that you never hear of because its not the news that gets raitings. Bravo on bringing this to our attention.

That’s an awesome story...I raise my glass to you, Mr. Florio!

By the way, Colette — not to be an ass, of course — but it’s “quadriplegic”, not “quadraplegic”. I actually had to look that one up to be sure, though, so don’t feel too bad.

Imagine beating the Luigi Meets Luigi Purple Coin Challenge by just blowing into a friggin tube, bitches! This guy is as real as they come, son.

Seriously though, I have often wondered what the hell I'd ever do with my time if I were stricken blind. Now I know I’d be designing the first MMO for the visually impaired for Acclaim.

I'm a "bible thumper" and I have no desire to outdo that. :) In keeping with Barcode's comment, I have always sucked at life. I really haven't had any noticeable "socially valuable" talents, skills, or gifts, and games have always helped me feel like less of a misfit, ever since I was a kid. I realize I don't have a disability, but I'm just saying I can ever-so-minutely identify with the gist of those feelings. For every kid who plays GTA and then goes on to kill a bunch of people, I'm betting there's many more who get much-needed encouragement and joy from games. But the Jack Thompsons don't think about that, do they?

LOL @ Ron

Very good read great to see games being used as such an enabling medium. Its definatly interesting what the future might bring to expand these games even more for the disabled and non-disabled alike. Isn't Sega now working with a company on brain controlled toys. I know there has been a lot of research on it so it looks promising.

YES! Finally games I can play when I'm ultra-drunk!

I'm happy for the guy for finding something that gave him strength to swallow the scoops of shit life spoon feeds us everyday, fuckin right bro... I have NO idea how complex these games can get, but frankly in his situation... I know I'd want all the mental stimulation I could get no matter what.

Cheers!

I am a christian myself and I am happy to see the bible-thumpers go the way of the dinosaurs. The days of spreading the word through those methods are long gone. But aside from that, I am very happy to see gaming being put in a nothing but postive light for once in the midst of all the lawsuits and manhunt 2's of the present day.

What playing games is all about, entertaining as well as inspiring people to create. Not giving people a excuse to shoot up schools.

I wonder when someone will invent a proper virtual game, no controllers just you inside the game. My guess is about 142 years 11 months 2 weeks and 6 days.

BEGIN THE COUNTDOWN!
