Q explains why Lumines hasn't come to PSN yet photo

When Lumines first arrived, it was considered a vanguard title for the brand new (at the time) PlayStation Portable. The rhythmic block busting puzzler was excellent, and really helped the PSP to stand out. With that in mind, you'd think the game would have been on the PlayStation Network ages ago.

Developer Q-Games has now revealed why PSPgo owners can't play one of the biggest and most important PSP games on the market, stating that music licensing and publishers have gotten in the way. Apparently they're still looking into it, but legal sticky fingers are making it look unlikely that Lumines will be on PSN any time soon.

"We would love to bring Lumines/Lumines II to the PSN store," states Q, on Twitter, where everybody does their speaking now. "But there are complications, music licensing, was published by Namco, etc. ... That said, we're obviously looking into it."

As of right now, the PSN is missing a number of PSP titles, meaning that Sony's latest and most expensive PSP doesn't have access to a full game library unlike the significantly cheaper PSP 3000, which can play everything. It seems the move to a digital era is truly going to be a long way off, if legal issues and slapdash implementation are to be the overriding factors.

I still don't understand licensing laws and deals. Why not make the same deal, just online?? Besides physically owning the game, what is really different between buying it in the store and buying it online?? Or for example, do they just not want to you to be able to put the game on to the two PSPs that you own at the same time?? I need Mr. Lawyertoid to help explain this to me.

They should make another PS3 version of Lumines, because it wasn't that great. No online multiplayer, not enough skins and a limited "career" mode had me not coming back for another play. Jim, did they mention anything about another PS3 version in the works?

Seeing Lumines on the Go via PSN would be a welcome addition to an owner's library. If Sony came through with the licensing for Lumines PSP, dropped the price and gave it a nice bundle they'd be on the right track... of course none of that will be happening, but I can wish.

Q:
We could bring lumines PSP to the PSN for little to no cash, it is almost total profit! Just give the music guys a call and say they will make a little extra.
Namco: No, we hate money. NEXT!

Music licenses are such a fickle bitch. This isn't abnormal at all in music games. It blows dick but whatcha gonna do?

This is one reason I have no immediate plans to purchase a PSP Go. Other than I just bought the 3000. I found both Lumines 1 & 2 for about 10 bucks each at the local Gamestop. These are such trademark games for the PSP, and for Sony not to have made sure that they were available at launch is tell tale sign that they don't really take the PSP Go seriously.

Actually I would probably re-buy them on PSN if they came out just so I could not use the UMD's.

Lumines is one of the reasons to ever consider owning a PSP. Even without hacking it.

Getting a PSP and not having lumines is like buying a Gameboy and not getting Tetris.

PSPgo won't
ever get a sale from me
anyway but not getting Lumines out there dooms the PSPgo to the dustbin of failed consoles along with Virtual Boy, Phillips CDi, the 32X, and the Atari Lynx.

@BluDesign
So 20 or so years from now it'll be collectors fodder?

fantastic game. If it's on the cheap, I might have to go get 1 or 2 onto my memory stick.

I felt gypped when I bought Lumines from PSN for PS3--a rehash of old skins, reworking of old tunes, and the size it took up on the screen was HUGE.
They should take a page from the Wii Tetris and do a co-op mode allowing two players to play on the same board to work together. That would make 2P modes that much more fun to play. Versus modes are over and done with sometimes in a matter of seconds.
