Puzzle Quest: the saving grace of Infinite Interactive? photo

The Penny Arcade strip above pretty much sums up how I feel about Puzzle Quest: rabid, undying devotion and a sense of addiction that puts a meth freak to shame. I'm apparently not alone, either, as I've read similar accounts from many gamers unable to put the controller down, especially after the game debuted on Xbox Live. It's no more than Bejeweled with a so-so story tacked on though, right? I mean, what gives?

It seems there is a little more to Puzzle Quest behind the scenes, actually. Infinite Interactive president Steve Fawkner recently spoke about the topic with Gamasutra, sharing some information about how the puzzle RPG was actually launched as a project to revive the company after an unfortunate period of poor game sales.

A blip from the full article:

The inception of the game concept was a "happy accident" caused by the process of iterative design. Steve started his plans with the ideas that he really liked Bejeweled and he really liked RPGs. Putting the two together seemed to result in a style of game that landed in that sweet spot the studio was aiming for, and seemed to be something compelling enough to play. He made a few versions that "sucked," and fixed those up over a month-long period until he ended up with something that "was pretty cool." Even at that point, the studio knew they had a game that would work.

It's a great read, for fans of the game and budding designers alike. Thanks to the brainstorming sessions the company had, a new genre was born that surely many will try to imitate in future. As much as I hate to admit it, I'll likely play every clone in hopes of recapturing the addictiveness that Puzzle Quest made me feel. At least, until Galactrix comes out, anyway.

I thought it would be over when I beat Puzzle Quest the first time... Oh was I wrong.

No other game I've encountered is as compulsively playable as Puzzle Quest... that is until Galatrix comes out, I'm sure.

I don't hate puzzle quest but im not in love with it like everyone else was. My reason? The randomness of it.

For example: Its my turn to go and I see a set up for 4 skulls, with a +5 skull in the middle of it. I nail it and its the other guys turn. He gets 3 yellows, which gets him 4 blues, which gets him 4 skulls in return, which gets him another set of skulls, and then its his turn again. It just annoys me how what you think is a good move can turn into you getting your ass kicked the next.

Puzzle Quest is like Smash Bros.

You can't criticise it without being overrun by fanboys.

And I just got Puzzle Quest, wondering what all the hype is about. F you everyone. I'm hopelessly addicted to it now. Just one more game, just one more game, just one more game...

Love Puzzle Quest. Pissed that only XBLA is getting the expansion stuff. I'd gladly buy the 'expanded' game for the DS if they put it out, but I don't play the game when I'm at home and can play console-required games on one of my consoles.

This game rules the time when I can't decide what to play and want to burn a few hours till I have to go somewhere.

I love it. <3

I had it on the DS and while I appreciated the gameplay, the story lost me enough to where I stopped playing it.

The development story was really cool. Gamasutra is always good, but I've been reading a lot of great content over there lately.

I recently got Puzzle Quest, and it has taken up all my time. I had to force myself to finish Professor Layton, then straight back to it. Awesome.

I've already finished the main quest, but for some reason I keep going back to it because I haven't captured all the mounts. I need all the spells!

@Tragic Hero: I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the AI is cheap. When I get Heroic Effort, I don't have a problem. But when the AI gets more than an extra turn I sit there and go "fuck that combo... fuck that one too... FUUUUCK LEMME HAVE A TURN!!!"

Finally got a chance to battle my level 50 Druid against my friend's maxed out character, and the lack of online with the DS version makes me a sad Mxyzptlk. Nothing's better than taking my character decked out with crafted rune items and fighting an opponent that can actually think. If they re-released the game on DS with the 1.5 content and wi-fi support, I'd pay $50 for it easy.
