Put those triple-X creatures to work: Spore finally has gone gold photo

This is the home stretch people -- Electronic Arts has announced that Spore has gone gold, and will be available on Mac and PC on September 7 in North America. On that same day, portable versions of Spore, Spore Creatures for the Nintendo DS and Spore Origins for mobile phones will also be available.

There's not much else to this story other than some squeals of delight, considering gamers have been waiting for this game since President Richard Nixon announced it along with his resignation in 1974. EA reminds us that there's also a special edition of the game called Spore Galactic Edition that comes with a bunch of neat but useless stuff that will clutter your house (two DVDs, an "Art of Spore" hardback book, a poster, and a 100-page "Galactic Handbook").

I'd imagine "do want" goes without saying, but there has to be someone out there that doesn't care about Spore, right? Speak up so we can throw things at you.

EA AND MAXIS ANNOUNCE THAT SPORE HAS GONE GOLD

Long-Anticipated Game from Gaming Luminary, Will Wright, is Complete and in Production; Hits Store Shelves September 7

Redwood City, CA – August 14, 2008 –The wait is almost over! Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) and Maxis today announced that Spore™ the most anticipated video game of the year from the creator of The Sims(TM), has gone gold and will be available for the Mac and PC at retailers September 5 in Europe and September 7 in North America and Asia Pacific. Spore™ Creatures for Nintendo DS™ and Spore™ Origins for mobile phones will also be available globally September 7.

Players who preorder Spore or Spore Galactic Edition from participating retailers will receive a coupon good for $10 off their next purchase of custom merchandise at www.zazzle.com/sporestore. For the ultimate Spore fan, the limited Galactic Edition will contain the 'Making of Spore' DVD, 'How to Build a Better Being' DVD (a 50 minute National Geographic Channel documentary DVD hosted by Spore mastermind, Will Wright), 'The Art of Spore' hardback book, an exclusive Spore poster, and a premium 100-page Galactic Handbook.

"We are so excited to finally get Spore into the hands of fans and players," said Lucy Bradshaw, executive producer of Spore at Maxis. "The Maxis studio has had an absolute blast creating Spore, but the fun is just beginning. The most engaging stories are truly the ones people create themselves, and we can't wait to see how players not only craft and explore the Spore universe, but hear what stories they have to tell as a result."

Spore gives players their own personal universe in a box, allowing fans to create and evolve life, establish tribes, build civilizations, sculpt entire worlds and explore a universe created by other gamers. Spore gives players a wealth of creative tools to customize nearly every aspect of their universe: creatures, vehicles, buildings, and even spaceships. Players can then seamlessly share their creations with the world via the Sporepedia™ and explore infinite new galaxies created by other gamers*.

I dunno...I tend to think of Spore as a one-trick pony because the time spent on creature creating is so extensive, yet the game play may not be so solid. I'll hold judgment until I see the multiplayer, but from what I've read, well...I am still a little wary.

Please don't be a polished turd!

I'm kind of excited for this, because, while it will probably be sweeter than fruit eaten out of Megan Fox's ass, I won't own a console that runs a good Spore game for a while.

See you in 3 years, Spore!

Pre-Ordered and ready for digital download day of. This fall and winter is going to be traumatic for my social life (what was left of it anyhow) between Fallout, Dead Space, Spore, Guitar Hero, Gears, Little Big Planet.. and I know I'm forgetting at least three.. or four for definite purchase.

Am I a bad person for not caring about Spore? I hated LBP until I saw Sackboys in motion though.

I only care about the DS and iPhone versions of Spore. Not looking forward to the PC or console versions at all.

/doh. That'll teach me for not reading.

I'll go back to my original status of DO WANT.

I blogged Spore a little bit earlier and how i'm cautiously optimistic

I've been looking forward to this one for along time. I can easily lose hours in games like Civ IV and this one looks no different. Again I'm still skeptical about the depth of the gameplay. how much playtime can we get from our creature running around and fighting others or singing to them (wtf?). I hope this will be the ultimate time sink it has the potential to be, but fear too much weight is being place on variety and not depth.

This is the straw that is breaking the camel's back, except the camel is me not buying a new computer. I have held out for 360 TF2 updates, but since this won't be out on consoles for awhile, I am just going to have to pony up for a new PC.

As cool as it looks, I can't see myself playing it for that long. My PC could probably handle it, but this game wouldn't force me to upgrade. I'll pass.

I'll volunteer to be the guy you throw things at. Spore just doesn't interest me in the slightest. Maybe it's the fact that it won't run except in DirectX10, maybe it's the endless parade of phallic monstrosities I've seen since the creature creator came out. Maybe it's that there doesn't seem to be any actual game there, just the freedom to build a monkey with five asses. What am I missing? Why is everyone so lit up about this game except me?

I look forward to creating my very own race of wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube men.

This will probably end up like Black & White (and the sequel) in being interesting for a few days then boring me to death. We'll see.
