Purchase Gears of War 2, get code to download five maps from Gears 1 photo

According to the latest issue of GamePro, Epic and Microsoft will be offering five maps as downloadable content day-and-date with the release of Gears of War 2. The five maps may look familiar -- they're all from the original Gears of War

"Gridlock," "Subway," "Canals," "Mansion," and "Tyro Station" will be made available as download when the game launches next month. The catch: the maps will be free, and accessible by redeeming a voucher code that comes packed in with Gears of War 2

So there's a bit of an uproar over this. The catch is that you must purchase a new copy of Gears of War 2 in order to get the code; once said code is redeemed, it becomes useless (think MS Points cards). How hard this will hit the used Gears 2 market remains to be seen, but it's likely (yet not confirmed) that the maps will be made available for purchase using Microsoft's MS Points moon money.

As long as they're available in some form on XBLA (free or purchasable) down the line, I don't care. I wasn't planning on picking up the game right away and figured I'd end up buying the limited edition version used from eBay down the line like I did with Gears 1.

Haha, wow. Having part of the game redeemable only once, a clever business tactic.

In this case, Necros, I doubt they're ever going to make them free. They may too much money off the maps, probably, and have no incentive to release them for free.

Companies have been toying with the idea of using downloadables like this to prevent or slow used game sales for a while. It's ridiculous. I don't understand why the games industry thinks it, unlike every other industry out there, should not be subject to second-hand sales. I can resell my house, car, CDs, DVDs, clothes, etc. But, games? Heaven forbid! How will the industry survive?!

Hmmm since when redeeming a onetime-use coupon seems to be such a wild idea? Developers are trying to get the most of the money by doing this and not allowing the used market to profit on their work.

I would even put the full MP to be code accessible. Great idea. Sign me in. Fuck Gamestop.

So because I use online rentals instead, I'm actually segregated from the majority of the online community already. Neat.

I'll be the first to call bullshit on companies playing fast and loose with DLC, but I'm actually not too fussed about this. How is it any different from a pre-order bonus? People go for those all the time without an uproar. If the maps are available for a fee to those buying the game used, I see no problem.

@xanderSan
I'm sure there will be plenty of people playing that game online to find a match without going back to the GoW1 maps. It's a cool thing to have maps you already know, but I'm more interested in seeing the new maps than playing old ones. You'll find people to play iwth.

Clever. I cant remember the exact title, but I heard some soccer game for PS3 could only be registered to play online once. If someone bought it used they would have no access to online features. Thats fucking hardcore!

Isnt gridlock already being remade for Gears 2? Whats the point of having the one from Gears 1?

How about quit fucking around with magic codes and futuristic "downloads" and just include the maps with the game?

ridiculous, they should just've made enough new maps to not require those old ones :-)

Personally, I think that this is actually a good idea. Look guys, even though the industry is being harsh with the idea of used games sales, they're not going to quit trying to stop it, and I would rather them do it by giving incentives like free DLC to first hand purchasers than other ways (DRM, whatever other batshit crazy stuff they can come up with).

That said, having a code for multiplayer that expires on the first use would just be fucked up.

I'm surprised no ones mention Lost Planet which had a collectors edition bonus map (that was released for free a year or something after the game was out).

The big problem here is that if no one other then pre-orders can get it...you can almost guarantee that no one will be playing it. But the thing is this looks like it comes with EVERY new copy if I'm reading the story right in which case fine...all the *loyal* Gears of War fans will be buying the game new (or should be) so it wouldn't be an issue and all the second hand buyers won't care.

Gear of war was not that great of a game and the Multiplayer sucked.

Who the hell cares?

I wanted to pick this up used but I guess I'll have to to get it new.

Now THIS is the way to get people to buy new games, instead of used. Give people a reason to buy new, and they will.

So, not only will I be getting a remote control tank and a golden lancer, I'm also getting some of my favorite Gears 1 maps for free? Fuck yes!

Only if you decide to urinate on your hard drive. And this idea is awesome, as a Gamestop employee, I can tell you this is gonna severely impact the used sales a hell of a lot. Like someone already said, give people an excuse to buy new instead of used and they will.

Despite what I previously said I'm at least glad you get to play the old maps. Trying to get the Construction Site from Time Splitters 1 back in the sequels was just bollocks.
