Punishing platformer Cloudberry Kingdom is out this week

6:00 PM on 07.30.2013

Wow. I had completely forgotten a) Cloudberry Kingdom, that brutal-looking platformer with randomly-generated levels, even exists and b) that it was originally funded via Kickstarter -- with a $20,000 goal, no less. Guess what? It's out this week! On PlayStation Network (today), Xbox Live Arcade/Steam (July 31), and Wii U eShop (August 1). There's also a PlayStation Vita version planned for "later this year."

This should appeal to those of us who enjoy the challenge of, say, Super Meat Boy with the unpredictability of recent roguelikes. I still think the art style is a bit gross, but it's better than the original pitch for Cloudberry Kingdom and it does get the job done. More than anything, I'm dying to give the co-op a try. There's going to be lots of yelling. Sorry, neighbors.

The challenge in creating a platformer is figuring out what you could do differently from everyone else. While the same could be said about any genre, you have to admit that it's especially challenging for plaformers, a genre...more

Canabalt 2.0 brings more modes and multiplayer to iOS

For the most part, I'm over endless runners, but I'll always have Canabalt. It hit at the right time and holds up well. Matter of fact, it's gotten even better with age: there's a free new update for the iOS version, out now,...more

Platformer Freedom Planet borrows from the Sega Genesis greats

Freedom Planet looks like a lost Sega Genesis gem, but it's actually a brand new action-platform game created by GalaxyTrail. I remember hearing about it a while back from Tony Ponce -- first in 2012 and again last year when...more
