Punch-Out!! developer talks sequel, create-a-boss mode photo

In a recent chat with Official Nintendo Magazine, Ken Yeeloy, producer of Punch-Out!! for the Nintendo Wii, mentioned his desire to make a sequel to the title. Would it be Super Punch-Out!! Wii? From the interview:

"I would love to make a sequel. I think with this first product, we wanted to make sure there was a definite, undeniable connection to the original. The sequel would be our opportunity to evolve the franchise further and add some cool, new things."

Gameplay lead Bryce Holliday also commented on the idea of a sequel, saying that the next version of Punch-Out!! would be "different". How so, you ask? Well, according to Holliday, it would contain the following:

"Cooperative, competitive multiplayer support or create-a-boss mode would be places to start but we'd need to come up with a new 'hook' like the motion controllers gave us in this iteration."

I don't know about you, but I'd buy another Punch-Out!! title in an instant. The Wii version was easily one of my favorite games so far this year, and the best game I've played on the Wii in some time. Would you be interested in a follow up?

@Bigmoose85:

I'd be interested to see how deep in the game you got by waggling. The motion controls work quite well, and the sideways Wiimote is even more precise.

@Bigmoose85 Waggleware? Interesting, considering I never once actually used the waggle controls, much like many others I'm sure.

@Bigmoose85: I played this game, but I wasn't even aware it had waggle until much later on. Guess what I did? Kept playing the way I had been doing thus far.

You can play Punchout! with your Wii remote turned on its side like a NES controller. Using the punching motion controls isn't necessary, it's just an option. So go ahead and shit on Nintendo for giving you the option to choose between two things.

Please god no waggle or if they want it make it optional like they did with this one.

That said Punch-Out Wii is my fave game on the Wii, I bought a Wii just for Punch-Out actually and beat it to the point where my record sits at 185-0 so I hope we see it soon with new boxers and more to master.

There better not be a single recycled character in the sequel. If they're going to use old characters, they should all be from the SNES game.

"There shouldn't be an option... Motion control is a gimmick"

Who cares if its a gimmick, or not? If people like using motion controls, than its there for them to use it, but if you don't like it, than just don't use it. How is having the option a bad thing? Its just stupid to say it shouldn't be there, just because you don't like it.

Played through the entire roster and half the Title Defense with motion controls, I honestly think it worked well enough. It's a bit more of a challenge, but completely serviceable. I just took actual swings, if you're half assing the gesture then I can see where you found problems.

I love how the whole point of the system is motion controls but the best way to play most games is using standard controller option. Fucking stupid gimmick.

I freaking love Punch-Out Wii!! I would buy a sequel without question. I like that the developers are set on trying new things. Next-Level is talented so I'm sure they'll only put in something that they are absolutely sure is fun.

As for the roster, I loved the way some of the old characters were updated to practically be new characters (Don Flamenco, Aran Ryan). If they use Super Punch-Out!! characters I hope they do as good a job because I feel the Super Punch-Out characters are weak compared to the Punch-Out!! characters (Aran Ryan and Bear Hugger aren't that interesting in that game, but they're awesome in Punch-Out Wii!!).

On the other hand I'd prefer a ton of new characters over old ones. The only returning characters should be Disco Kid (He's so good that it made me sad (but not much) that Next-Level didn't make more original characters), Pizza Pasta (although with a more believeable name and a Gangster persona), Narcis Prince (by far the best character from Super Punch-Out!!), and Little Mac as the Dream Match. Otherwise, lets trust Next-Levels abilities to make fantastic, new characters to beat up.

Indeed Motion Control is a Gimmick, a Money Making one of which is Why Microsoft is Finally trying to get in on it and Sony is Retrying (What recent games even use 6 axis)

Dont Bash Nintendo for Being Successful at what the other companies envy

Super Punch-Out!! featuring the blonde Mac, maybe both the classic one and him, we don't know if they are cousins.

Also a VS mode with roster!!

I felt the motion controls were a bit more responsive (sans wii balance board, of course) and much more fun than the oldskool controls.

Anyways, I like their priorities for the sequel. They did such a great sequel already that there's little room for improvement, except for multiplayer of course. Just having a create-a-boss mode would make me buy a sequel.

I love the idea of a create-a-boss mode, especially if you can incorporate them into normal fighting circuits and share them with friends.

oh hells yes. how would co-op work, though? two on one?

I would love to see more characters come back, and retools of recolors. I mean, look at how awesome they made Aran Ryan.

Excellent read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing a little research on that. And he actually bought me lunch because I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch!

Activision needs to suffer. That's sounds like hyperbole, but I'm not even kidding. They

really need to suffer some major setbacks, such as the crumbling of Infinity Ward that we

are now witnessing, to understand that they can't continually ass-rape the consumer and

developer alike and get away with it. Kudos to those two.

Even if this theory doesn't lead to a translation, it could tell us what language the disk is written in and what kind of a document it is.
