I probably shouldn't be surprised, but I kinda put publisher ineptitude down to bureaucracy, not stupidity as well...
I have been waiting for just that to happen, which is why Ive been more wary of established devs throwing their hats in the kickstarter ring. But I still think the publishers would have to offer something more than the scenario Feargus Urquhart (what an awesome name) was offered because what dev would take that shitty deal?

@Rogue257 I used to do that but now I need a fucking wiki entry to tell me which Pre order bonus's are where and what game comes with what fucking online pass or if I have to buy the special edition to get an unlock code for DLC already on the disc ETC.

I can see where whodatninja is coming from. The whole Kickstarter concept is like...it's like someone went out of their way to develop the most glaring security flaw that they possibly could. I mean, literally all you have to do is talk people into giving you money. That's even worse than hacking because at least hacking involves work.

If that's the case then people are looking at Kicstarter all wrong. People look at it as a pre-sale full of goodness and niceness, which is the wrong thing to do. It's an investment, and just like any investment there is a strong possibility of losing everything. No one should put anything into a Kickstarter project that they wouldn't otherwise be willing to lose at a casino. There's nothing shady about that, and if it ever does become routinely shady it will collapse from people abandoning it.

I am sure most of you are agreeing with me on this, EA is the most likely suspect. I don't think they are just because they have shown to be a big ass, I think its more because they tried to get into the "indie" market before, offering an indie bundle on origin that had no indie games in it. EA always tries to make use of constructions like this to make money.

I'm not surprised a publisher tried this nor am I surprised Fergus Urquhart turned them down. Since I can remember him in the old Black Isle days talking about the fights he had with Interplay over Fallout 2's release. Obsidian, much like Double Fine, gets unfairly kicked around by publishers and casual observers and I am so very happy for them now that they're both free of the bureaucratic mess that the industry has become. Also JE Sawyer should sing more <3

Actually the first thing that came to my mind wasn't EA, but rather smaller publisher like Topware, Southpeak or Xseed. It's gotta be tough for a lot of the very small publishers out there with the expense of games constantly rising. Unlike with pre-orders which are just an indication of intent to buy (and where they don't see profit until well after release), with something like a Kickstarter, they get the money before release and can put the money into development, advertising and distribution. It could have been EA or some bigger publisher as well, but I suspect they would know the public backlash that might occur (though yeah, EA doesn't really seem to have a great PR Department and could have made a huge mistake like that).

Just once I'd like to see him get righteously indignant about developers who exploit good feelings for them to basically garner millions on Kickstarter. Like Double Fine. Or how you could "Kickstart" the Penny Arcade card game, that was already published, printed, and ready to ship, offered no tiered rewards, and was essentially kickstarting not a goddam thing.

How about we wait til we know what companies it is before getting the sacrificial alters to art and decency goin, eh? Bethesda is a huge publisher, and they are generally pretty rad. Hate certain players, not the game because in this case the game is publishing the shit we like and most companies aren't dicks about it. There is nothing inherently wrong about publishing games, their are just a few companies that really suck ass about it.
