Publisher downsizing could help Nintendo, says Iwata photo

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata thinks that the recent trend of game publisher downsizing could help them out, and his points kind of make sense. He says that publishers are backing the more popular consoles, and not necessarily the most powerful ones.

"A number of major software manufacturers are reporting that they are experiencing a financially challenging time or that they will be scaling down their operations," commented Iwata in a recent press conference.

"To the third party software manufacturers, the surprise must be bigger," he continued. "Some are reportedly saying that they bet on the wrong horse or that they need to change course. I recognize that each one of the third parties is trying to develop software that can be appealing on DS and Wii systems which have significantly increased the installed bases, while narrowing the overall number of software to develop."

I know if I had a games company, I'd either shoot for low-cost development for any of the console download services, or I'd make bigger better titles for the Wii or DS. In this economy, you'd have to believe that companies aren't out to take any chances right now.

Iwata sorta sounds like the guy from high school who all the girls think is soooo sweet "just as a friend," but now that the ladies have been dumped hard he is zooming in for the rebound.

Yeah, it's bizarre only a few indie and smaller companies have tried to put any real effort into titles for the Wii and DS. Though I don't agree they shouldn't be "taking chances". Because making generic crap for the Wii or DS just because it's cheaper won't cut it.

You take the budget from one generic crappy 360 game and make like a couple DS games and some console Arcade titles with some fresh ideas, and then you're a little more spread out with a better chance of a big return on a smaller investment.

So in other words, the industry is shrinking. That is never a good thing, even if Nintendo is making lots of $$$ from it.

Why do we presuppose that the games will be simplistic, if they are on the Wii? I admit, i live in Holmes ideal world where games are first developed for Wii then enhanced for PSMS

hopefully in the process of downsizing they also learn what makes a game good and go with that...

also, does this mean people will be losing jobs?
