Psychonauts Two? Teaser image hints at possible project [Updated: It doesn't] photo

It has been hailed as a modern cult classic and like those that came before it, many lamented its lack of sales and poor marketing. Hope for a new Psychonauts may have seemed dim, but it's been served a little more ignition today, thanks to developer Double Fine and its recently posted teaser image (above).

Right now, nobody exactly knows what's "coming soon," but it could be anything from a Wii port to an entirely new game. It could also be nothing at all, and gamers' heartstrings are being cruelly pulled. Whatever it portends, there's no denying that eager fans everywhere will soil their pants on command for new Psychonauts news.

What do you think Tim Schafer's playing at? Is an entirely new Psychonauts on the way? Is it heading to the Wii or DS? Get those overactive brains working and let us know your theories.

[Update: From Mr. Schafer himself: “Man, who knew how much excitement a little darkness could bring? The truth is we are just putting together a new page about 'The Excellent Game Psychonauts.' We're not announcing any new games or anything. Sorry if we confused anybody! We lightened up the image to hopefully make things clearer.”]

That looks like a DS game to me, based on the level of detail and art style in the illustration.

This is the only Wii port I would allow from an old-gen system. F' the DS.

Would you look at that? I just learneded something new!

portend - [pawr-tend, pohr-] - verb - to indicate in advance; to foreshadow or presage, as an omen does: The street incident may portend a general uprising.

Yea I'd shoot for a Wii port, which much like Okami would rock. I'm fine with any system giving a game that deserved more attention a second wind that could give rise to an amazing sequel. Plus I'd get to play it.

It's actually the Psychonauts guy pointing his finger to a "1.000 copies sold!" banner, while being an ad for Brutal.

I'd bet it's just a placeholder for a Psychonauts-related section of the site which is yet to be completed, rather than a sneaky announcement of a new port/sequel.

I'm fairly sure it just means the 'Psychonauts' part of the Double Fine site (that was redesigned recently) is coming soon, since it was there on the old design but isn't anymore. I don't think Double Fine is physically a large enough company to develop two games at once.

That illustration isn't DS-style at all; it's just part of the original Psychonauts box art with the brightness turned down. Use an image editing program to zoom in or brighten it up and this is more clear (unless you have a nicely-configured monitor, in which case it's clear anyway).

Probably just going to be a page about psychonauts. No new game, or port I reckon.

Considering it's the original art from the first game, it's not likely it's a sequel. Or they'd use new art or some sort of other teaser image. Quit picking apart everything and starting rumors! Silly brits.

I predict either a port, or an ad for Brutal Legend done in a way that simultaneously excites and pisses off fanboys.

Yeah, I was thinking it would be some new news soon too, but i'm pretty sure after thinking about it, it's just a placeholder for the Psychonauts section of their site (which isn't finished yet)

Not to mention we just found out about Brutal Legend, which is still over a year away. How far off would a new Psychonauts game be?

Other than being a website placeholder, the only other thing mentioned that would be possible would be a Wii port. It wouldn't be done in-house by Double Fine though.

Man, I would really, really love for a new Psychonauts game. Anything with more Sascha Nein... unfortunately, I have to believe that we're going to see a port to Wii or DS. The game didn't sell well despite critical acclaim, I'm just not sure that there's enough money there to develop an entirely new game. Plus, with Brutal Legend taking center stage, I wouldn't imagine that Tim Schafer would be able to devote enough time to the sequel to make it justified. All Schafer or no game, thank you.

I was going to comment almost exactly what Brandon Undead did.

Look at that image. I know it's the same picture of Raz that's been around for years, but with the silhouette positioned just so, his fingers are clearly giving the symbol of a number two.

If a Psychonauts 2 comes out, then Destructoid had better start a campaign to get people to buy it.

I don't know if the DS or Wii could add anything to Psychonauts. I beat the original on Xbox, and I would like to see a sequel be released for a next-gen platform or the PC.

Well, there we go. Tim Schafer has confirmed there is no Psychonauts project of any kind going on at the moment, that the image is just the original Psychonauts box art, and that the page will just contain information about the original Psychonauts.

In other words, something that pretty much anyone even thinking about writing about games should have been able to piece together immediately, and I'm genuinely amazed about how so many major gaming blogs have milked this one and gotten people excited about what is precisely fuck all (even a "Well, it's pretty damn unlikely considering it's the original box art..." would have been nice).
