Psychonauts 2? What a nice Christmas present that would be photo

We are possibly just falling into a ploy by Double Fine to get some attention, but we figure Double Fine deserves it. A few days ago, the studio launched a Psychonauts themed Web site, The Psychopedia, and today we've spotted a new post that talks about Psychonauts 2.

Of course, there is no Psychonauts 2 ... at least, not officially. After the first game suffered disappointing sales in the face of critical acclaim, it was pretty certain that we'd never see another. In fact, even The Psychopedia calls it "The Unicorn of Gaming." So why is there a page on it, and why is there even a Psychopedia in the first place after all this time?

Is this all gearing up to the fabled sequel, or is Double Fine simply yanking our chain? At least the developer has an outline of what we could expect in a follow up: "After doing Psychic stuff, he fights things, finds things, goes into things, goes out of things, eats things, drinks things, learns things, knows things, rescues things, and saves things."

The page then laments the inability to be more descriptive. We join it in lamentation, before being arseholes and telling everyone that the page spelled "protagonist" wrong.

[Thanks, Dexter]

Oh, hey, look. I can edit a wiki! That must mean I have insider knowledge about a company I have absolutely nothing to do with!

Wouldn't that be something else? We'll see what happens, but that could definitely be pretty well amazing.

I decided a long time ago that if I ever became a millionaire I would finance a Psychonauts 2. Other games I will finance if I ever become wealthy:

Grim Fandango 2
Kings Quest 9
Space Quest 7
Monkey Island 5
Beyond Good and Evil 2 (Thanks Ubisoft)

Also, after reading Double Fine's news post every few weeks, this just seems to be Tim's humor. Sure he'd love to do it but I think he's more lamenting the fact then announcing his next game.

I only played that game last year after finding a copy in a bargain bin, and it's one of the best games I've ever played. A sequel would make me one happy lad.

I believe Double Fine is testing their audience.
Fan service does explain it, but opening a page like this with no goal rather than having info on a previous game... I don't know... I really hope they get support and proper marketing for a Psychonauts 2.

Stop your shenanigans Double Fine. Just stop it. Square Enix is already trolling me really hard over Final Fantasy XIII, please don't add to the misery of my tormented heart. :(

This is that special kind of rumor that makes me think, "Oh, that would be really great, but if it doesn't happen it's not the end of the world." Although some would disagree. And it's always nice to see Heretic eviscerate someone.

You're welcome, Destructoid!

I wouldn't be surprised if this is just Double Fine jerking us around, because they know that the vocal minority wants the game. However, I would be very pleased if this meant Psychonauts 2 is actually in development. Prove me wrong, Mr. Schafer! Prove me wrong.

Does anyone know where to find figures on how well the first Psychonauts has been doing sales-wise as a downloadable game (if they exist yet)? If it convinces enough gamers to give it a belated chance, then who knows? Obviously too early to start holding one's breath though.

Well if any game deserves a sequel its Psychonauts.
Sucks that the sales weren't that great otherwise we'd probably had one by now.

Dammit capitalism, u suck sometimes.

I think it was a serious marketing issue, they pushed on the Xbox at a time when it was (and maybe still is) mostly a shooter genre. Along with PC which at that time was really hitting record lows on software sales.

It was a horrid event.

Heck I would buy the original again. The graphics would age pretty well. Better than some of this crap they have out.

Oh god, it pains me to just think about it, why must we be teased?!?!

Psychonauts was also released on the PS2 if i recall...
Frankly, i think a lot gamers are just scared of trying anything really new and better and would rather just have their sequels...

such a great game, never got the attention it deserved...

Am I the only one who thinks Psychonausts should not be touched? I loved it as much as the next guy, maybe more, but I think the first one is a work of art and any more of it would dilute the artistic nature of the original.

I think from the ending, it's pretty clear they wanted to do a sequel, so I don't think it would hurt the artistic nature of the original, but in fact it would realise the original artisitic vision.
Anyhow, stop this Double Fine. D= I would give a kidney for Psychonauts 2, but I think you've made it pretty clear where you stand on a sequel.
Monte's Avatar - Comment posted on 12/25/2008 13:42

@RonBurgandy2010
not really... the way i see sequels is that you should never make any unplanned/unnecessary sequals as those are just trying to ride the wave of success of the previous game and may not live up to it... however if a sequel was always the original intention then it should be made; to not do so would be to like leave the artist's vision only half finished

If i recall, i think the only reason double fine didn't make a sequel was because the first game did poorly in a business sense and as such there wasn't a publisher willing to support the developers in making a second game.
