There's always time for stories about glitches in Modern Warfare 2. Yes, once again 2009's most popular shooter has been exploited by people who feel accomplished by cheating in videogames. The latest bug arrived in very much the same way as the last one -- it's a PC mod that has been smuggled onto the Xbox 360 version.
This new glitch grants players the ability to move in fast-motion, and players get the feeling that they're skating on ice while they move. Running gives players about five times the normal speed. This glitch is most commonly found on Sabotage games, so be warned if that's your preferred gametype.
Every glitch uncovered in Modern Warfare 2 is yet another point scored by those in favor of dedicated servers. It really seems that letting Infinity Ward handle everything did not make for a more secure and fun gaming experience. Not that we expect IW to care, given the amount of bank they made.

How, exactly, is this evidence for dedicated servers? The Xbox version doesn't even support those. Jim, you of all people know that people are raging dickheads who will try any means of cheating. Dedicated servers would not have prevented this.
So can we finally all just agree that this really isn't a particularly well made game? It's addictive and entertaining but both single-player and multiplayer have too many issues for the game to deserve all the praise it got.
@Mr Pibb
If you made one of the most popular games of all time; to the point where millions of people were attempting to hack it daily, and months after release they finally find some way to change the game's code themselves with a separate program, that's the developer's fault?
How can reviews predict the future for viruses that haven't been invented yet? There were no glitches on release.
@ Naktu
If dedicated servers were present, then the operators could at least permaban cheaters and other forms of scum & villainy from their servers.
I'm not sure what the Xbox 360 situation is with dedicated servers, but I know of at least a few PS3 games that allow for dedicated servers. Hell, Warhawk even has a trophy for hosting a dedicated server. I'd imagine if the PS3 can do it, it should be well within the realm of possibility for the 360 as well.
Naktu: The support for dedicated servers argument comes from the fact that this happened on a console. IW.net makes the PC version act more like a console, which is apparently more secure because IW itself can control everything.
Happened to me on Team Deathmatch Express last night. Played a few rounds and rebooted. People are still assholes with the care package marker and move at approximately twice the speed of sound with this glitch enabled.
@ Magnalon: Plenty of the glitches like the Javelin and infinite care package glitches were in the game from release and were just waiting to be exploited. Someone modifying the code is different than finding a glitch. Both damage the experience but for the former there is very little a developer can be expected to do to prevent it whereas a glitch can be found and prevented in testing. And there always seems to be some new issue affecting the game so I don't believe that they tested it thoroughly. Aside from the glitches there are just straight up retarded design decisions like the Akimbo 1887s which I don't think you could deny are the developer's fault.
The fact is that Modern Warfare 2 was largely praised for its online component. That component is filled with problems that take the enjoyment out of the game. Therefore I don't see anything wrong in saying that the praise it got was undeserved.
@Jim, ah, well that makes sense. But I'd think you would the merit of this system by the speed of IW's response, not the presence of this sort of thing.
Is this a glitch or is it a hack? There is a difference. Glitch is the devs fault, hack is the community fucking with code. While banning for glitching I cannot stand behind, banning for hacking I can.
@Sheppy, this sounds like a hack that is possible because of a glitch. Host exploitation, I'd bet, but that's something devs always have problems with, see Halo standbying, among other things.
So far, 3 exploits have been found. Javelin, Care package, and this. For what can be called the videogame equivalent of a 'Blockbuster' movie, that's not bad. How is it IW's fault they didn't find every single bug/exploit in the game before shipping it? Name a single game that has ever been glitch/bug/exploit free and I will reconsider. However, shit happens. The only thing that matters is how soon IW deals with it when it happens.
Any game that is as hotly anticipated as MW2 will have problems when the unwashed masses get their greasy paws on it.
This sort of nonsense would be going on with dedicated server support regardless. Fact is, there's always going to be a bunch of cunts who want to ruin the game for everyone else.
While IWNet has been something of a disaster on PC, its implementation made some sense from a business point of view (making DLC more attractive by removing support for custom mods, for example). So PC gamers hate it. Solution: Make the next MW game (or whatever Infinity Ward does next) a console exclusive.
I play the PC version (sadly), tehre is a cheater on about 3 of the 5 game si get into, so for anyone to say that dedicated servers wont fix anything, sorry but you don;t have any idea what you are talking about. On a dedicate server the admin bans the user and we wont have to deal with that any longer. The matchmaking and ping times are absolutely ridiculous as well, your lucky to ever get below a 100 ping.
With that said, the game is great and I love it, otherwise I wouldn't care to write this.
Left 4 Dead 2 doesn't have dedicated servers(on 360) but its easy to deal with people because of one reason: VOTE TO KICK
The Dedicated Server whiners have a SINGLE continous argument in favor of them, griefers. Add a god damned Vote Kick option and ALL will be well. That is, until the spoiled brat PC gamers come up with another limp excuse to get their way. Seriously, enough about Dedicated Servers already. Its not gonna happen and bitching about it won't make it happen.
Haha, I thought the same. Now we need a cloak cheat or something.
Also, I agree that MW2 being the most selled videogame in history makes it target of hackers without better things to do in their lifes than fuck a game for other users.
@Rammstein
I dearly hope you've separated 'spoiled brat' from 'PC Gamer' because otherwise you're being an idiot.
And you know what, maybe I am a little spoiled. Because dedicated servers are better, there is no question to that. You can come up with several 'reasons' why matchmaking and P2P is better, but when it comes down to it, dedicated servers offer more options, less lag and encourages community which is something games using matchmaking can't exactly boast.
The facts speak for themselves, regardless. MW2 on the PC has become a raging hellhole of hacking and cheating with people using aimbots, exploiting hacks and ruining the game with other players having no ability to do anything about it.
We know it's not going to happen, but it might not of if IW didn't make such an idiotic decision regarding multiplayer.
Speak for yourself. The only thing dedicated servers offer me is custom maps, and those are typically very poorly designed. Any FPS with dedicated servers usually has something annoying about it. Forced MP3 downloads, clans team stacking, terribad maps, some lame party mod, hackers who spoof IP addresses and grief a server. On my TF2 favorites list, I have maybe 6 or 7 servers, and apparently, everyone else has the same ones, because they're always full. Now, some people like being annoyed to hell and back, and that's fine, but I rather enjoy being able to jump into a game without having to hunt for a server that doesn't suck.
"but I rather enjoy being able to jump into a game without having to hunt for a server that doesn't suck."
Sounds like an argument for dedicated servers. When I join a server I know it will be a server I enjoy playing on, but when you join a game through match making you have absolutely no idea what you will find when you enter the game.
How? I'm not even following that argument. Whenever I boot up TF2, I'm, rolling the dice. The only good servers might be full, so then I have to spend 15 minutes joining and disconnecting trying to find something not assy.
With matchmaking, people are usually in my skill bracket, and I don't have to put up with the stupid crap people like hosting on their servers.
I actually think this is a cue for Infinity Ward to stop modifying the Quake III engine and start making their own engine from scratch for their next game. Because 11-year-old tech is causing these glitches to happen.
Actually I'd rather try to get into a full dedicated server than use IWNet's matchmaking. So many times I've been put into a game that's already over, or about to be over, sometimes a game that isn't even in the right playlist. It gives you 0 control over what you're jumping into, and the only way to avoid it at the moment is to just back out of the game for a bit and hope some fresh, better servers come up.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

If so, it's not that big of an advantage and it's actually kinda fun to shoot through and try to knife everyone only to fail miserably...

Apparently it can't.
not to mention playing with 30 ping. instead of 150.

Also, lol Dedicated Serpents.
"Maximum Speed"
"Play ball!"
Any takers?

Right Jim, Right?
dedicated servers are in beta testing phase atm.
and if you weren't so clueless you would know how important dedicated servers are for the competitive scene.
if you dont care, fine, but there is a big number of people that need them, and it was not right for iw to block their use just because they can.
It's nice being able to log onto a theville server on TF2 and see players i've played with and enjoy playing with.
How? I'm not even following that argument. Whenever I boot up TF2, I'm, rolling the dice. The only good servers might be full, so then I have to spend 15 minutes joining and disconnecting trying to find something not assy.

IW should have done some more testing and blocked this pc-360 transition crap.
