While the price of the PSPgo was announced for North America and Europe at E3, those gamers trapped in the British Isles had been left wondering with silent trepidation what the damage will be. Now the cost has been made known, and it is indeed high. Any Brits wanting to get their hands on the PSPgo will be expected to pay a princely sum of £224.99, because we're not in a recession and people can totally pay that much.
It's interesting to note that in NA and Europe PSPgo costs the same as the original PSP did at launch. However, the UK will be paying over the original 2005 launch price, unsurprisingly making it the most expensive version of the PSPgo on the market. Apparently that's what happens in Britain now.
With Activision hiking the UK price of Modern Warfare 2, and Microsoft doing the same with the Xbox 360 Arcade, a very worrying trend has emerged. Brits have always had to pay over and above what they should thanks to criminally high taxes, but now the games industry appears to be taking advantage, hiding behind the weak excuse of exchange rates to justify their parasitic prices.
One only wonders where the great price rape of Great Britain will end.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I think I'll stick with my unbelievably awesome totally not hacked with definitelly no emulators on it and certainly no PS1 or homebrew games on it.
Seriously, you can't hack this, wich is, IMO, the only great reason to buy a PSP anyways.
I kinda wish I could edit/delete posts...
PS3 Slim = $299
Straight conversion of that is £180. However it's been announced we'll be paying £250. That's almost $400 dollars. Rule Britania indeed.
Wow... it sucks living in Britain...
Well, I couldn't live in America! At least we have fish and chips!
New games costs $95 here in Norway, so I know what it's like.
And I spoke to someone from a gamestore here in Norway today, they said the price cut on the PS3 will make that much of a difference.
Maybe we get this treatment because the average person in Britain and Norway makes more money than people in US.
I'll get whicever ps3 is cheapest.
I live in an intensely Irish/Germanic town in rural fucking nowhere.
We have three Irish pubs from straight ficking Irish immigrants. We got fish and chips bro. And about 20 Celtic bands and 500 European folk bands. Exagerations but whatever.
What? It might be because I don't get currency.
But if $60 translates into about £35 (according to google exchange) shouldn't we pay that much?
Oh, so Norway sucks too? Maybe it's only US that doesn't suck when it comes to gaming...
That's me sold. Or converted. Whatever.
As soon as you make games WORTH £55, then I'll start paying £55 for them.
Or, if you take the Atlus route and give me loads of cool stuff at no extra cost.
But raising prices "because you can" is just retarded.
Great now we have a chart!
Yeah, because we are all rich over here, right?
No.
At least, you could argue there, that the money is used for worthwhile stuff, but high prices directly from the corporations is certainly stupid. It's a trend that will have to stop, because people will simply stop buying.
My prediction now is that PSP Go will have a damn hard time against iPhone, and overall, Sony have now lost on all fronts. DS and iPhone kicking it ass over here, and 360 and PC doing the same over there
Tax on everything is exactly why I import some of my games, or wait for game sales.
I still think the prices should be as follows:
PSP Go! = £120 (putting it in competition with DS
PS3 Fat = £150
PS3 Slim = £200
Only then will they be able to match MS and Nintendo, and let the decent games, or lack of them do the talking.
Sony has done some pretty cool stuff recently, but this is a real downer. It wouldn't be difficult to see a 3000 price rise - Xbox style - so it doesn't look so cheap compared to this new one!
