PSPgo UMD conversion not happening for 'legal reasons' photo

Earlier today, it was announced that Sony was offering three of seventeen downloadable games to PSPgo upgraders who registered their older PSPs online. This seemed to hint that Sony would not be offering straight-up UMD-to-digital conversions for PSPgo owners who wanted to transfer their old game collections.

Sony has now admitted that, while it was once evaluating the possibility of conversions, no such offer can be made at this time due to legal reasons.

"We were evaluating a UMD conversion program, but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the program at this time," explains SCEA. Quite what those legal and technical reasons are has not been explained. I think it would have been more honest for Sony to simply say, "We want more of your money if you're dumb enough to give it to us."

I was really quite excited for this new PSP, but Sony has done a fantastic, admirable job of killing all hype the machine could've had going for it. Sony fanboys, please explain to me without hyperbole, strawman arguments or nonsensical trolling, why I should still go ahead and buy a PSPgo. Make a sound, sensible, polite argument for once in your lives. I am listening.

I'm still trying to figure out why they would try to alienate the already there PSP crowd with this.

At this rate, they should've just made this a complete new handheld rather than a complete redesign.

Jim, its simple, dont you see it? This will unchain us fro0m the evil bastard retailers who prevent us from a utopia of cheap gaming once sony can control the sale prices of its games instead of being forced to sell it to retailers at far higher pric-*is shot*

Sony wanted to get in on this "making things that will be popular in five years but are not at all popular now" bandwagon that until now had been cornered by Apple.

It's working about as well as you could expect it to.

AND THEN, IT SUCKS.
SONY HAS FUCKED IT ALL UP AGAIN.

Seriously, the PSP-3000 is still there, waiting for you. It has a bigger screen, better battery life and it's also cheaper. Also, if you live in Europe, you can get it bundled with GT. If you want a PSP, you can't get better than this.

FUCK THE PSP GO

Comparing this to Apple is pretty accurate- They are deliberately paring away functionality to the end of making more money by charging for it (or something similar and more expensive) later. It worked for Nintendo, but I can't see who would want to pay more for it when you can just as easily download games to a Memory Stick. Like CoruptAl125 said, go for the 3000. The digital distribution revolution will occur when companies figure out how to charge consumers responsibly.

Copyright Law, handicapping humanity since...1800s?
When copyright was first born, it's just a few years. Now for literatures it's author's whole life plus 70+ years. Seriously, people? 70 years(after the creator die)? In Internet time, that's enough for one million cycles of death and rebirth of the universe

This doesn't seem to be targeting the audience of consumers who already own a PSP, despite the handheld's very high re-adoption rate from one version to the next.

The only reason for someone to buy a PSPgo if he/she already has one is the smaller form factor.

As someone who doesn't own a PSP yet, I'm still intrigued by the platform, but I find this a horribly disappointing predicament for current PSP owners.

I sincerely hope the PSPgo fails horribly and people keep purchasing UMD games. This way, maybe Sony will get the message that people don't want to be tied to a digital monopoly.

I bet it's because 3rd party publishers have to agree to having their game purchasable/downloadable online due to contracts were originally for games to be published via umd. What makes me think that is the list of 17, all sony titles I believe.

I'm getting one. Don't want it? That's cool. Don't buy it. I wonder if you people rage over everything you don't want to buy and certainly don't have to buy.

What if you buy a car. They've got two versions of the car you want. There is one perfectly good slightly older model that suits your taste just fine. But there is another version of that exact same car available with all kinds of nonsense built in. Thus way too expensive for you because you just want your car to get you fro A to B. Are you gonna say: "FUCK YOU CAR MANUFACTURER FOR MAKING THIS OVER EXPENSIVE MODEL!!"? I hope for you and the sake of mankind that your answer is "No". You can change this example into any other device you want (FUCK YOU DYSON WITH YOUR EXPENSIVE VACUUM CLEANERS!! See what I mean, you can just buy another cheaper one and you can still vacuum your house.).

Point is, you don't have to buy it if you don't want it. It's pretty sad to get angry over something like this. Now if Sony discontinued the PSP 3000 altogether it would be a different story. Maybe.

Oh and

"...maybe Sony will get the message that people don't want..."

speak for yourself. Thank you.

Really just don't even bother buying one. The entire concept just reeks of ass. I myself don't own a PSP of any model, I would like to pick up a PSP at some point however and when I do I will be getting the PSP 3000. Digital downloads just do not bode well for me, especially with how the industry seems to be treating them right now, ie just another way to increase your profit margins.

I mean really, less costs on advertising, packaging, distribution, production, many of these things are just flat out eliminated and yet game prices are still high. I will never pay top dollar for a intangible product. Another concern I have (of the many) is that there's no guarantee your game collection will be available in 5 years. Getting off topic, but if that PSP Go! breaks down in 3-5 years, and Sony isnt hosting servers anymore because the next big thing is out and about, your game collection is essentially gone. No thank you.

Call me a Sony fanboy if you wish. I love Sony and feel they've given me all that I could ask for and more as well as will continue to in the future. Call me insane or delusional if it makes you feel better. I really could care less.

That said, I probably won't be buying this, I see no need at this time since my current unit will likely take me into the next remodel. I see this as more of an update to the hardware as they try to move the system in the digital direction. Eventually UMD's, despite what they say now, will be phased out. It's more for the new consumers coming on board, which fro speaking to many non-psp owning and non-blogger/geeks are actually thrilled that there's a psp all digital.

From what I read into from their statement is, they're going to release the conversion program when they're able to. And that's completely fine with me, for I'm in no rush.

Feel free to flame.

You know I have been seeing all these comments, "OH MY GOD IT DOESN'T HAVE A UMD DRIVE!!!!" when before the go was announced people were calling for the death of the format. I watched people complain about the PSP's umd drive cause it is loud, slow load times and it kills the battery life of the unit. So sony has made a model that doesn't need umds.

People who have a lot of umds and are complaining keep you old psp to play them, then buy digital versions of new games that can be loaded on BOTH. Yes prices are high for digital versions of the games right now, but other digital download platforms starting having sales after they got going.

As for people complaining about used games your right you wont be able to trade your games in for $2 so they can be resold for $10~$20. I'm sorry for this long rant but I am so tired of listening to people complain. If you don't like or want it don't spend your money on it, Sony isn't phasing anything out that will stop you from using your old system.
broonor's Avatar - Comment posted on 09/24/2009 23:06

Do THAT many people play their old games? I never trade my games in, but, truth be told, there's only a handful of games that I ever put back in to the system long after I've "finished" it. Then again, I don't mind getting off my couch to swap discs on my console :x

If I get a new shiny game, I tend to play that one until I'm sick of it (or beat it). Then it disappears, possibly forever.
ElTopo's Avatar - Comment posted on 09/24/2009 23:10

@ Phaal

Which is why no one will be spending money on it. Less features, more expensive, no tangible product. UMD was not a good format at all, but going all digital and just dividing your market was the wrong choice. Perhaps they should have just stuck with the PSP 3000 instead of slapping a Sony Mylo with some psp looking controls and calling it a day.

On a side note, when the next iteration of portable systems rolls around, I really hope Sony gets its sh*t together. Some form of tangible media would be good.

Very well I will act like a Sony Fanboy just for shits and giggles.
BUT JIIIMMMM the pspGO! is amazing and here is why
1. The psp 1-3000 are too big. So if you put them into your pocket, it looks like you have the dong of a horse. NATURALLY, the ladies surrounded you within an instant. If you want them off your back, buy a pspGO. It will make your pants bulge less.

2. The Name. The pspGo! Much better than "3000". I mean you can go... and spend lots of money on it and you can go... anywhere that you can with n older model psp but IT HAS A COOLER NAME.

3. BUT JIIIMMMM UMD's are the invention of the devil. Its how the devil plays his psp. Do you wanna be the devil? Didn't think so...

4. Look at the sheen of the...

Fuck it I have nothing. Honest to god, nothing.

You're not trying to defend a clearly stupid idea.
That alone makes you fireproof.

The ones who do, however, are simply flame-retardant. It's not like fire is going to stop them from being a bunch of fucking blind bastards - they just swear by a company who wants nothing more than to fuck them.

I too, am a Sony fan...or I should say WAS a Sony fan, back when Ken Kutaragi was in command. That guy knew what he fuck he was talking about. It's as if Kaz Hirai and Jack Tretton are playing Bill and Ted, and they decided to kill Rufus to steal the phone booth for themselves.

The problem was this: you should listen to that dude Rufus, he knows what he's talking about. And unfortunately, they didn't. And they won't. And they'll continue to plow the name brand into the dirt slowly.

These clowns are running what used to be a majestic giant, now turned into a freakshow by two asshats who think they command the flow of the industry. What they fail to realize is that the industry commands the flow of the manufacturers and publishers, and the consumers are the heart, voice and soul of that industry. Without their support, you have nothing.

So, it seems that they are quite content with the possibility of having nothing.

It makes complete sense to have a large library of games and then eliminate it to me.

It almost makes perfect sense to charge $70 more for a system that offers less, and it also makes perfect sense to charge a premium for games via your online service that can be found sometimes 2/3 less new at a store.

I totally get Sony.

Doesn't it to you guys?

It's the same strategy that they used in the cutting of BackCompat for PS3. We've got a library that's well over a thousand games...that are fucking useless once your PS2 shits on you. Ha, ha suckers - ha, ha.

Why did the PS2 never drop BC? Because it made fucking SENSE.

Why was Ken Kutaragi the man who made both systems to be capable of playing past systems' titles? Because he made fucking SENSE.

Why was Sony far more than a simple trendsetter, but a shining beacon forward into a new age of gaming? Because they used to make fucking SENSE!

Now...wow. I don't know what to think anymore. I mean, there's a lot being said about the iPhone, DS, Wii and 360 by the fanboys who defend the company's total lack of regard for their own currently-existing product. These are the same people who probably bought the currently-existing product, and these are the same people who would theoretically be shit on the most by this move. There's no sense in this, and I gotta say that a vote with your closed wallet is the smartest move the gaming populace at large could make against this.

Think of how outnumbered the stupids are here. Now multiply that by, well...a hell of a lot. That's what Sony's staring down the face of with a shit-eating grin. Best of luck to them. I don't want to watch what happens next.
