PSPgo 'save state' feature allows drop in/drop out play photo

The PSPgo's launch is a mere two weeks away, but a brand new surprise has just been revealed. Sony's latest attempt to gatecrash the handheld gaming market has a neat little feature called "save state," which allows you to pause and exit a game wherever you are without having to scramble to a save point. By using "save state," players can exit a game, do something else with the PSPgo, and then resume from wherever they were.

A number of DS games sport a similar feature, where a temporary cartridge file allows players to save their progress anywhere (although to prevent cheating that save is wiped when the game's reloaded). However, unlike those games, it's not yet known if the PSPgo's "save state" file will be retained if the PSP is completely powered down.

I really hope that the new save feature works if the system's switched off, since I think emergency saving is quite essential for any portable game. Handheld games that don't allow you to at least temporarily save your progress quickly aren't doing their job, as far as I'm concerned. When I'm playing a game on an airplane, I want to know I can resume my progress once the cabin crew forces me to turn my machine off like the Nazis they are.

Either way though, it's a cool little addition that will make the PSPgo much more user-friendly. As one of the few people actually looking forward to the system's launch, I can only approve.

Can't you do something extremely similar as it is with the current PSP when you put it in sleep mode?

Similar yes, but I think the difference is that you can Save State and continue doing something else with the device as opposed to just putting it away until you're ready to play again.

It's not about putting the PSPgo asleep. Unlike with the PSP, you can stop a game and then come OUT of the game to do something else with the PSP like listen to music or browse the Internet.

@DaddyG

Both the PSP and the DS will pause games when put into sleep mode, but won't allow you access to any other features of the device without quitting the game first.

If the save state feature actually does work when totally powered off, then I damn Sony for actually putting a feature I would value into the PSP, therefore making me want another one.

Funky :)

I was quite happy with the PSPs sleep mode (which uses next to no batter, unlike the DS version), but this sounds like it would eliminate the need for traditional save methods.

Emulators have been using save states for years - while I'm not a fan of the PSP Go, I have to applaud a console manufacturer for finally putting in one of the most useful features in all of gaming.

Hopefully, as Jim mentions, the save state wipes when you load it, or it makes certain games such as Ghosts 'n' Goblins ridiculously easy if you're able to save anywhere.

Um what the heck? Hasn't emulators been doing this for years now? Also, wouldn't having a save state pretty much make any games too easy? Anyone can save state there way to victory without taking a single scratch.

That's what gaming on the go needs to be. Pretty cool move Sony.

@Chronic Logic: The way I understand it, this thing is different from the emulators' save states in that you only have one and you can't just reload it whenever you want. If it's removed once you load it once then you shouldn't be able to cheat with it.

So, is it going to be kinda like the quicksaving option of FF: Dissidia? Or would everyone be able to exploit it to make games easier?

If that's how it goes down then it's a great feature.

Now, if they could just replicate twin stick!

Finally, something about the PSP Go that I think sounds like a great feature. This would standardize it across all games instead of just certain ones. This sounds similar to the Wii's VC way of doing it. Not that such a feature would be enough for me to get the Go model from my stone age 1000 model, but at least it's a start.

Sounds handy, though I agree with Chronic Logic that game emulators have been able to do this for a looong time.
It sounds convenient that if you get stuck on a difficult game, you can pause, jump onto the internet and look up a guide (this is assuming you aren't anywhere near a computer).

That's an excellent feature. Not sure if it's enough to make me want a PSPgo, but it puts me closer.

This is one of the reasons I actually go back and play games on emulators that I alreadly own. This and speed control because for some reason the creators think it's a great idea to make a winning animation take years to go through (Here's looking at you Final Fantasy)

That'd be cool... if I actually used the PSP for something other than games.

It's really just a step up from the sleep mode, which to me is just as good, since I don't really do anything but game on my PSP. If I want music, I'll just turn on my iPhone.

Very cool. But what Ireally want to know is if I'm going to get a discount if I trade in my normal PSP. If Gamestop gives me $100 off, then mabye I'll give it a shot.

...Doesn't this already exist? I know if I'm in the middle of a game on my PSP and I hit the off switch, it will return me to where I was when I turn it back on.

Like I explained earlier in the thread, no this doesn't already exist. It's not just a case of putting the PSP into sleep mode like you can do now. The new feature allows you pause the game, exit the game, then do other things on the PSP like browse the 'net or play music. Then you can return to the game at the point you left off.

Thank goodness they've saved the one useful thing a firmware update could bring to the table and shelved it for the new model, eh?

This should have been standard on PSP from the beginning. There are some folks working on implementing this as homebrew so there's no reason Sony shouldn't be able to do it themselves.

This already existed as a homebrew plugin. Sony might have listened to the guys who said it was a great idea.
