PSPgo sales 'in line with expectations' photo

The PSPgo launch was not exactly an exciting and star-studded affair. My local store was practically empty and there was no danger of the machines selling out. This seems to be a pretty consistent story across the world. Despite this, however, Sony has boasted of a PSP sales boost and believes the new model is performing as expected.

"PSPgo has performed in line with our expectations, driving 100% incremental volume for the category and has benefited the broad PSP portfolio with PSP-3000 also enjoying a big lift," states Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. "PSP software sales also having been a standout with both new releases GT PSP and FIFA 10 performing well."

So far, no sales figures have been made public, so we only have Sony's word on how well the PSPgo is doing. Something tells me it's not in any danger of threatening the DSi, but we'll have to wait and see. Maybe more expensive systems that do less than previous models are in fashion right now.

Yeah, the DS(i) is a freaking monster. I don't have any type of PSP, so I'm thinking about getting one. On Sony's website, it says both the white and black pspgo's are on "backorder." Trying to create artificial demand?

I love my 1000 and I would never change it, ever.
Jim, you know that the picture isn't of a real psp go, right?

"PSPgo has performed in line with our expectations, driving 100% incremental volume for the category...."

What in the seven hells does that mean? "Driving 100% incremental volume"? Are they using big words, hoping that we will be confused into docile submission?

It's a shame the pspgo sold at all. I understand the convience of it, the fact you can have LOTS of games on it without carrying a pile of UMD's around, yet the way in which Sony handled DD on the system in regards to full games is scary.

I am doomsdaying here, but the relative (if small) success of this will set a precedence in the industry that will benifit no gamer, or consumer.

I love digital distro, all I ask for is decently priced games and the knowledge that the game will become cheaper over the time it's on the service, permanently. So far, this has happened extremely few times. I got super stardust on a sale, and loved every minute of it.

The fact it sold at all made me cry, just like the fact COD:MW2 will sell millions will hurt my sad gaming soul.
It's nice to know gaming is mainstream now, so major companies can proceed to rape us over and over.

We'll Sony expected no one to buy the Go, so the handful of sales it actually achieved probably account for whatever a "100% incremental volume" is.

Sure, this is like saying our expectations were to sell none and we sold one. It sold really well!

'in line with expectations'

Sounds like something the Emperor from star wars would say.

That's where we have to make a statement, at the cash register. This companies see us as Lemmings and thing they can rob us blind. Another example is Activision trying to justify the £5 increase in MW2 just because they can raise a price doesn't mean is fair.

"incremental volume" means that additional sales that are generated without incurring an increase in expenses.

Basically they are practically admitting that the PSPGo had fuck all development costs, being as there is no new tech in it that's no surprise. It's probably cheaper than the PSP 3000 to make, the profit margin on the unit sales and the game DL sales are so high that they don't care that they haven't sold many and are counting it all as additional sales.

This is the kind of non news articles I rarely loathe these websites for.

Sony - We announce that the PSPGo released as expected
Sony - We announce that the PSPGo works as expected
Sony - We announce that the PSPGo is selling units, as expected

Every console maker holds press conferences to toot their own horn. Sony pats themselves on the back for the PSPGo being a success??? SHOCKING!! BREAKING NEWS!!

Spin on...

Thing is, there's gonna be a price drop for X-Mas. Sony Rep at my local GameStop confirmed this.

I would expect Sony to say this regardless.

As much as I hate the Nazi machine I want Sony to get on the ball already. Hopefully next holiday season we'll see a hardcore battle. Maybe Nintendo might even surprise, hm?

I'm guessing 3 sales total. Jim got one, I think someone from Joystiq got one, and probably someone from IGN. Give or take a few thousand sales.

Now that the PSP Go is out, you guys should really take a picture of a real one to use with your stories instead of that fake mock-up that 1up did.

"Maybe more expensive systems that do less than previous models are in fashion right now."

Alright, so I know that bashing Sony in general and the PSPGo is still the height of fashion but really?

PSPGo added 16Gb Internal Memory, Bluetooth Connectivity, and the new Pause Game feature in a smaller form factor while it took away the ability to use UMD. If I'd never owned a PSP and I was comparing the two to make a choice, it seems like the GO does a lot more to me. I'm staying with my PSP-3000 for now because of how many games I currently own, but I may eventually change my mind.

I may be in the minority, but I don't sell my games, I'm more of a collector. I'll admit that I was torn by convenience vs. no physical media but I've already downloaded Activision Hits, Dead Head Fred and Gran Turismo to my PSP-3000 and I've found that I'm more likely to play games on the memory stick than any of the 40-some games I own on UMD. I'm also purchasing them, not pirating because devs work hard and deserve our money for games we like.

Sony is going to continue selling a UMD based and non-UMD based PSP for the foreseeable future. Most people on this site (including obviously the writers) are very plugged in to the tech world but we forget that the vast majority of consumers don't follow gaming news and tech changes. Most are not tech savvy and broadband penetration is still not that high (at least in the US). People will continue to buy the UMD based PSP's because of the used games market and Sony will likely release a UMD based PSP-4000 next Fall that includes the internal memory, bluetooth connectivity and game pause features anyway.

Consumers now have a choice, smaller form factor and everything in one self contained unit but you can't sell your games vs. carrying around discs but you can still sell your games and buy used copies. Shame on you Sony for giving consumers a choice like that!

Do I really need to dig up articles from around the web from the PSP-1000 launch when everyone was bashing Sony for going with UMD's in the first place "more proprietary crap they're shoving down our throats", "not convenient to carry around more than 2 or 3 at a time", "why didn't they go with a card based solution?" But we've all forgotten those complaints right? Because that was a whole four and a half years ago which is like, decades in internet time.....

=) Well that being my first post I figured it should be a good one.

I'm just sick of the general blog trend of bashing companies when they don't actually deserve it. "Everybody's hating on Sony so we are too!" Now, when Sony, MS and Nintendo do something wrong, I fully expect them to get called out on it.

Don't get me wrong, I love Destructiod for the snarky writing, but really, do it when it's justified. Otherwise this becomes just like every other blog that just fuels a lot of pointless bickering and flame baiting.
