PSPgo launch boosts PSP sales 300 percent photo

No, this story isn't about that werewolf, but rather, about the success of the PSPgo's launch sales. However, since I work for a videogame blog that allows me to use whatever type of header picture I like, and I was in the mood to use that wolf, there it is. Enjoy.

Gamasutra reported this afternoon that the PSPgo launch has been quite a success. According to Sony, the sales of the PSP have been boosted over 300 percent since the handheld went on sale October 1st. SCEA's corporate communications director Patrick Seybold commented on the jump:

With several blockbuster games launching digitally and on UMD in the coming weeks -- from LittleBigPlanet to Assassin's Creed Bloodlines -- we expect this momentum to continue and look forward to a strong holiday season for both the PSP Go and PSP-3000.

SCEA also reports a noticeable jump in PSN downloads, which have jumped up roughly 200 percent. Of course, it's expected that a sexy new device like the PSPgo will do well out of the gate, but still, it gives those retail naysayers something to think about. Here's to hoping the little device sees a ton of success.

...you're still looking at the wolf, aren't you?

300% increase translates into a 3 unit increase, sadly.

Sales of PSP have boosted 300 percent, it doesn't say those sales are a majority of Go's, which we all know they aren't. The Go spiked the 3000 sales. Digital downloads went up too, but as we also know, any PSP3k owner can download the same games as a Go owner can. So I don't believe one bit that this shows anything positive for the Go, rather the PSP3k, which is good because the Go sucks. Admit it, you know it does. Sony will write anything with their spin to try and justify the Go, but they have failed and will continue to. Not even big words and numbers can save this thing.

I came for the wolf, Colette, you got me, good. :)

Oh and I'm not the one for conspiracy theories, but if the pspgo really is a ploy to sell more 3000's, Sony might be the craziest geniuses on the market today.

It is a strange, strange tactic.

Sony was (apparently) right to charge early adopters a premium price. Some people will buy anything branded with the Sony name, so why not gouge where you can? That said, I was checking out a PSP Go system tonight. Sexy little toy, just not sexy enough to justify the $250 asking price.

I'll get a Go someday. But, only because it's aesthetically pleasing. At least the white one is.

Well, I think what's really helping out here is Sony finally go some actual content on the Playstation Store for PSN.

Dissidia and Persona finally pushed me to get a PSP, also helps that there's a decent backlog of RPGs for it, so I got the 3000 when Dissidia came out in a package. Sadly it seems PSN's store is just as much of a joke as Nintendo and MS's online stores are.

Time will tell if PSN gets with the program and continues the momentum they've started with PSPGo. I was glad to be able to download stuff like Prinny and Thexder Neo, but if stuff just trickles out for UMD games like it does for the PSOne classics, the momentum is going to slow. Its still too late to catch up with DS at this point either way.

No. Let's not hope the PSPgo sees a ton of success. An all digital handheld is a wonderful thing, but I think Tycho put it best today when he called the PSPgo "a campaign of aggression against both retailers and consumers."

I'm all for moving past the retailer and going to a digital marketplace, but accepting Sony's current offering is like willingly downloading a trojan; it will only encourage them to keep making poorly conceived hardware and screw over their consumer base. If the PSPgo fails (which they'll never admit even if it did), it would tell the console folks that we as consumers won't swallow utter crap and smile at them for the privilege.

I would hope a new system iteration would illicit increased sales. What happens the next few months down the road is much more important. I will say that Motorstorm Arctic Edge is some of the best portable gaming I've had in a while. And a lot of the PSP minis look good (aside from their prices).

I want to see this succeed for no other reason than to see a feasible and profitable digital distribution system whereby the savings are passed on to the end user- wishful thinking, I know, but a man can dream.

Another weird and disturbing close up.

Anyways, good for the PSP and Sony. Bravo. It probably would of sold more if you sold it at 125 and the games would be 10 bucks cheaper on PSN, then you would of avoided all this back lash sony. Oh well.

Ah. Good ol' fluff percentages.

The (hopeful) separation of the PSPgo and 3000 in the Media Create and NPD charts over the next few months should offer a much clearer picture as to its success or failure.

Considering what a poorly kept secret the Go was, and that prior to the official announcement people actually had high expectations, I'd imagine those sales are built up demand for the normal unit. Honestly, if a company isn't willing to show solid numbers, or even separate the sales from its original model vs the newly released model, there is apparently something to hide.

My guess? They went from 15,000 sales in one week to 45,000 the next week; nothing to sneeze at, but uhh...the world has not been set ablaze.

@ender_x: The graphics of an individual software title have zero bearing on the quality of a console's hardware, and I am not disparaging the physical quality if the PSPgo... mainly because I have yet to hold one. However, the device is poorly conceived. It provides very little in the way of upgrades from a PSP-2000 or -3000, portability being the only real (and from the reviews, slight) advantage. It is astonishingly expensive for a revsion of hardware that's been available for four years. Furthermore, leaving existing UMD owners out to dry regarding their owned titles ensures that upgraders have to shell out for games they've already bought. Even the charger and data cables have been changed to ensure that you're buying stuff you already own from Sony once again.

Poorly conceived is not the same as poorly designed.

I have a 3000 and have already purchased four games from PSN since Oct 1. It's getting to the point that I need to consider either buying a FAT pro duo card or switch to the Go, and with the Go I get to have a sexy little thing in my pocket.
