PSP software update features XMB search, Internet security photo

Plan accordingly, because Sony has just announced the features for the next PlayStation Portable system software update, v5.50.

The new firmware will feature a host of new improvements, including an XcrossMediaBar "Information Board," a news ticker similar to the one already found on the PlayStation 3. Additionally, you'll know be able to create and access sub-folders on your Memory Stick PRO Duo, which is good knows for people who are sticklers for music, video, and photo organization.

Internet search for games will now be accessible directly from the XMB. By selecting a game from the XMB, you simply bring up the menu and select "Internet Search," which will launch the browser and bring up search results relevant to your game. Seems like a good tool if you're looking for walkthrough information, cheat codes, and more.

Finally, it appears that Internet security software developer Trend Micro will be offering up software for the PSP. The latest software update will allow access to free trials of two pieces of Trend Micro PSP software. The first is "Trend Micro Web Security," designed to prevent PSP owners from visiting those evil personal information stealing Web sites. The second, "Trend Micro Kids' Safety" will stop your children from accessing pornography and inappropriate Web sites, like any videogame blog other than Destructoid. Right?

No word on availability of the update other than "soon." We'll let you know when it's a go.

nice additions but I don't think they warrant the .45 version number hike

Now if only they could make internet browsing on the PSP not be so freaking slow. Looking at anything other than a text document takes 5+ minutes to load.
