PSP sales plummet like lead balloon in US photo

The PlayStation Portable might be doing well in Japan, but the same cannot be said in the United States. The system's sales have dropped off a metaphorical cliff in the US, with sales down 58% from last year. This includes both the PSP-3000 and the rubbish PSPgo.

100,000 PSP units were sold this January, according to the latest NPD data. Compare that to 2009, when Sony shifted 172,000 of both units, and we're looking at a 58% sales drop. I guess the American market just wasn't ready for an innovative new PSP that forced high game prices, dropped functionality, and couldn't even improve the system's outdated Wi-Fi connectivity despite marketing itself as a digital platform.

Oh well. Maybe this year's inevitable PSP rehash will improve things.

You know what would help the PSP?? Porting Patapon 2 to the PS3! Ok so it won't exactly make the PSP's situation any better. It would make me very happy though.

I have to admit my PSP has been getting more use as an MP3 player than a gaming device.

And to add to that, the only game I consistently play on it is, in fact, Japanese.

Well, the PSP is too. So I guess I'm partially to blame for this. My money is in Japan somewhere.

What does it matter that Jim reported this? Wouldn't change the fact that the PSP is a useless brick. It's as if Sony doesn't even know what it wants to do with it. It's never received any marketing, has no target demographic and most importantly... a really shitty, shallow library.

It boggles my mind how Sony has this HUGE library of games that it can throw onto the PSN, and it doesn't. PSN updates are laughably mediocre at best, and new games almost non-existent. How are we supposed to support a failing handheld when we can't even buy the crutches to support it?

I'm under the assumption that it's doing well in Japan due to Monster Hunter. What's the PSP killer app in the US? Does anyone know how the software sales are going?

The PSP just needs something special to be relevant again. Sure, its more powerful, but it has not evolved correctly inside the industry.

My PSP was a handy mobile browser and MP3 player until I got my iPhone. Now it's in the bottom of some box packed up back in MD waiting to be shipped.

There are plenty of PSP games if you actually look for them. Most people pass up gems like Half-Minute Hero, which makes me extremely sad. I get more use out of my PSP than my DS. It's too bad sales have dropped in the US, but it's not surprising.

Good grief mathtards, it's a 58% drop.

Maybe if Sony would get around to giving US users Vargant Story they'd see a bump. The idea of having a portable Vagrant Story was what tipped me over the edge into buying myself a PSP for Christmas.

@T3h Kaiser

"a really shitty, shallow library."

Have you actually LOOKED into PSP games? If anything, PSP's problem is it doesn't have enough shallow and shitty games that directly compete with Scribblenauts and Nintendogs. Depth and quality are NOT in short supply here.

What IS in short supply are people willing to actually PAY for the games. I do love the irony as someone telling me PSP doesn't get enough of the good games from Japan when he torrented Phantasy Star Portable 1.

@sheppy Thats the whole problem right there torrenting PSP games, no one is willing to develop for PSP when pirating is so rampant and easily done.

DS is not only harder to do (not by much but it takes some effort, unlike PSP), but DS is cheaper to develop for as well.

So when your a company looking at these two which would you pick?

@ Volomon

Your use of "everyone" is flawed. It's "the west" that won't buy games. It's "Western" companies who are hesitant to develop for the PSP. In Japan, PSP games sell great and piracy isn't nearly as big of problem there as it is in the west.

I've been played half minute hero a lot. that game is amazing. psp needs more games and shouldn't have 40 dollar games. Well actually, since you can download the games off psn and put them in 3 other psps, 40 dollars actually isn't a bad price....

Anybody who thinks that the only problem is piracy doesn't really know what they're talking about. The game library mainly consists of rehashed titles shrunk down to size from their PS2 or PS3 brothers, with a few original games here and there. It's not so much the quality of the games as it the "been there, done that" feel of most of them.

Besides this, there are not enough casual games for kids and non-gamers.

Piracy is a problem on the DS, except it's a problem reserved to the hardcore segment of owners, just like the PSP. The difference is, the DS has a diverse enough catalog of games and diverse enough group of owners that the piracy barely makes a dent in Nintendo's profits.

I love my psp-2000, however I only used it maybe 10 hours since I opend the box, then shelved it for going on a year. Bought it for the awsome Castlevania : Dracula X Chronicles and the FF7 spin off (meh). I hope things turn around because competion is a good thing.

There's a lot of good games for the PSP but it seems like no one promotes them at all. Metal Gear Solid Portaple Ops, Acid 1 and 2, Peace Walker is coming. Both Hot Shots Golf Games, Persona, Jeanne D'Arc, Final Fantasy Tactics remake, Gitaroo Man, Prinny, Castlevania...I could go on but I can tell you've stopped reading this post a long time ago.

"PSP that forced high game prices"

this ---^ Why buy a PSP game for like $40-$50 when I can get it for $20 retail box. It'll be a long time till many games drop in price because sony controls it and you can forget about borrowing or renting. Don't like a game lulz can't refund it or sell it on ebay.

PSP does need a few new popular games to get the system moving. I bought a PSPGo this year, and I've been having a lot of fun with it. Nice to bring a stealth game console to work. It looks like a glorified smartphone in the case.

I got Patapon, Brave Story, and Crimson Gem Saga so far. I plan to get the Persona games on it, the new Lunar remake, and eventually the .hack//Link game. I'm not without games to play.

Don't get me wrong, my PSP gets its fair share of playtime, but let's be honest, when compared to the sheer amount of quality games found on the DS, it simply doesn't compare. For every great PSP game (which there are, despite what fanboys tell you), there are 3 cheaper ones of equal quality on the DS. You have to give Sony some credit, they entered a market COMPLETELY dominated by Nintendo and managed to make a dent in it. No other company can claim the same thing.

Still, I haven't played my PSP in about 2 months, so I would agree with those that say we need more good PSP games. I can't even recall a single PSP game worth buying in the last 2 months OR in the next 2 months. Generally, that's a bad thing.

sprcrzy110 is right. Besides Peace Walker, I haven't heard about much of anything coming out for the PSP this year.

Metal Gear Acid 3 would be great. Or Megaman 2 Powered Up. (Or just put MM10 and Sonic 4 on that sexy beast. )

It's a sad state of affairs because at the beginning of last year, the PSP was looking pretty strong (library-wise).

I guess Sony forgot to tell people to KEEP making MORE games for the PSP.

To be honest, I think Handheld gaming as a whole is suffering as of late. I'm truthfully done playing just about every game that I WANT to play on both the DS and PSP.

The DS needs more games like The World Ends with You and the PSP needs more like Jeanne D'Arc if they hope to hold my interest for much longer.

The real problem is that sony hasn't decided wtf they want to do with the psp at all. . . "Let's release a download only console, well make ALL OUR GAMEZ available online for teh win!!!" So anyone with half a mind said, "oh shit lets not buy any of these umdeeznuts since they are now obsolete" Now sony hasn't/won't/can't put its library online, and the pspgo flopped miserably, but consumers are still wondering wtf. . . most, smartly, wait until psp2 which may or may not every show up. . . What i really think they need to do is just buckle down and make psp games playable on the ps3, that would automatically bump up the install base, and get people who are remotely interested in any of the great lineup of games on the system a chance to try them, play them and then if they think "man i sure kinda wanna play this monster hunter thing on the go", its just a simple step to upgrade? to the handheld of their choice and get gaming. . .

If they put Sonic 4 on the PSP, that would be the greatest thing ever. Put Megaman 9 and 10 on there too, as part of a collection. Or just slap them onto the the PSN. If they're putting SFIV and Sonic 4 onto the iPhone, then by god they can put them on a real gaming system.

I don't get it. The PSP is the only handheld I currently own, I gave my DS away.

Sony needs to market the thing better.
In my opinion it's library of good games is about the same quality wise as Nintendo's actual good games.
All it lacks is a hoard of shovelware and Petz/Bratz/Babyz crap.

PSP needs to stick to marketing towards adult guys and teenage guys and firls though.

I love how fanboys of Nintendo defend the DS because old people and kids prefer it. Is that something to brag about?

But seriously, if KH birth by sleep doesn't come out soon, my PSP might be next to go.

They need to do some serious work on the wifi. I mean common you can probably put a mmo type game on there. Instead the PSP has offline mmos that are just copys of its online counterparts (like that pangya, PSO and other crap). Also there is virtually no online community because in order to play online, you have to connect to your ps3 and sit infront of it all day (so wifi is useless, if you can't use it on the go !)

Not surprising. There's no push. No reason to buy. I love my PSP, but I mostly play PS1 games on it. I've had 10-20 good PSP titles over the years and that's been more than enough for my gaming habits, but if I wasn't already a PSP owner looking for something to do on my system, I wouldn't feel any pressure to buy one.
